How Would All Day Battery Life Change Your Computing Habits?

Published

Ben from UMPC Portal is wondering how your computing life would change if all day battery life were a reality. I will be overjoyed if/when that happens.

Ben wrote:

Imagine this: One year ago, there was a huge battery breakthrough. All of your mobile tech gadgets have a battery that is good for an entire day of computing. I’m not talking about what a big company calls ““all day computing” (maybe 8 hours?), I mean 24 hours of continuous use on a single charge no matter what task you are doing.

Ben specifically asked us to answer two questions:

  1. How would your current computing habits be different (other than ‘work longer’)?
  2. I would actually get to use all the features I use on my notebooks and iPhone when I’m away from my cords. I could forget about having to formulate ‘battery strategies’ whenever I work remotely or travel. My power cords would never have to leave my desk and I wouldn’t have to buy/carry multiple batteries for my devices.

  3. Two years down the road, what would gadgets evolve into, knowing that they were designed with all day battery life in mind?
  4. I think devices would be built to be ‘always on.’ They would always be doing something- playing music, auto-updating your status on twitter, downloading/aggregating content, etc. I think some really innovative applications would be developed, and it would open the doors for alternative interfaces.

How would you answer the above two questions? Check out Ben’s and UMPC Portal readers’ answers here.

Since I seldom need more than about 4 hours of computing power, I wouldn’t change that much except I would run my laptop at full bore power. I would not dim the screen and would make sure the processor was not slowing down at all.

As for the gadget question, I can imagine a cell phone that does not have to turn off the screen at all. You could keep it going all day with the screen always showing you info. What would you do with this? Finally real TV on your device.
