HP Slate prototype captured on video

Published

on

Some dude (that’s not a slam; the guy is pretty anonymous) has posted a YouTube video showing a prototype of the mythic HP Slate. He offers a once over of the exterior and a brief look at the basic software.

Not a whole lot of new revelations in the video. The boot speed is impressive due to the SSD. It does include the ctrl-alt-del button that was once required on Tablet PCs (lot of commenters on Gizmodo and YouTube have left derisive opinions on this). And despite past mentions of pen input, there is no pen garage anywhere. While it may have an active digitizer, it lacks a built-in place to store a pen. He also describes a covered central port as being USB, but I suspect it’s the docking port that is supposed to enable USB and HDMI connections.

Of course, this is a prototype, so don’t take any of that as final. What’s unexplained is how this seemingly random guy got his hands on the prototype and was allowed to demo it like this. I can only hope this means the Slate is closer to release because I’m getting real tired of commentators looking at this like they’ve never seen a Windows-based slate before (even if it is true for them).

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the GBM community and posters for creating a space on the internet where there can be some informed conversation about tablets. The comments on the Crunchgear and youtube pages are so filled with ignorance and silliness that a legitimate conversation about the product is not possible. People are complaining about a CTRL-ALT-DEL button because they don’t understand how a real slate computer works.

Also, this reviewer shouldn’t be on the air. He clearly doesn’t know the product area well, and is making all sorts of mistakes in presenting it. I wish he would call Sumocat or Warner to come over and take a look.

Did anyone else notice a quick shot of what looks like an expresscard slot on one side of the slate? That may be a SIM tray but looks too big for that. I also noted the absence of a stylus silo, and without an active digitizer this will be an automatic fail. I would love to use “real” MS Office in a pinch, but what I really want from a Win7 slate is a OneNote screaming machine that REPLACES a yellow pad and furthers our paper-less (will never be paperless I’m sure) future.

One thing to keep in mind is the rumor that it uses an N-Trig digitizer. The one advantage of that, aside from four-finger input, is that their DuoSense digitizer allows for pen input even if the manufacturer opts out of it. This requires a battery-powered pen, but it’s still active pen input, so it’s not out of the equation yet.

Aren’t the N-Trig digitizers teh ones all the TX users complained about? My Wacom on teh HP 2730p is nearly flawless for inking (keep in mind I don’t need/use pressure sensitivity, as I want to keep my OneNote PDF’s as small as possible).

I’m trying to keep an open mind about N-Trig. A lot of the problems were due to upgrading the OS. Some of the hassles were on the vendor side. I haven’t seen a major outcry against more recent releases.

I’ve tried out N-Trig on an HP tx2 running Windows 7 64-bit. There were no obvious flaws as far as I could tell, though I don’t think they have Win-Tab pressure sensitivity support up for apps like Photoshop on 64-bit yet.

In fact, my biggest complaint is actually that there’s no side button hover-click option in the drivers like Wacom offers.

A while ago when some slate pages popped up prematurely on HP website, one of them listed an accessory called “HP Slate Leather Folio with Digital Pen”.

Nedd to demo the pen. Touch did not look real smooth, but that could be due to the film on the screen.

If it is dockable and you can use either pen or finger (or ideally both in gestures as Microsoft demoed) this would be a serious entrant. After the rumors that the HP Slate would be Android only this is good news.

This guy says to send him questions. My major question is if it have a pen as well or doesn’t. if not, then is the same as all the rest.
Anyone knows how to file those questions to this dude anyway?
