HP Veer and Pre 3 Smartphone Announced (Video)

Along with the webOS TouchPad tablet announced today, HP had also announced two smartphones to extend its webOS family. The company announced the HP Veer, a smartphone that is about the size of a credit card while still accommodating a full-size portrait-oriented sliding keyboard in the style of the Palm Pre, and the HP Pre 3, which retains the Pre, Pre Plus, and Pre 2 heritage.

The HP Veer features a 2.6-inch 320 X 400 touchscreen display. It has the same 5-megapixel camera with LED flash and a front-facing video camera for video calls like the Pre 3, comes with 8 GB of memory, and support for the Touchstone charger. The device utilizes an 800 MHz CPU from Qualcomm.

The Pre 3 now increases the resolution of the screen to a 3.6-inch WVGA capacitive touchscreen, up from an HVGA resolution from before. It features a 5-megapixel rear camera with LED flash and a front video camera as well. HP is saying that it is working with companies–like Skype–to bring video chat to the webOS ecosystem. The Pre 3 will come with either 8 GB or 16 GB of internal storage and the same amount of RAM as the Pre 2, according to HP.

Both the Pre 3 and the Veer will be compatible with HP’s Touchstone charger. The Touchstone charger is a magnetic charging dock that users can place their smartphones on top of without having to connect any wires. The phone would be intelligent enough to know that it is docked so that it would display an agenda view, a photo slideshow, or a clock–depending on user’s preferences–when docked. Moreover, when docked in a call, the phone will switch to speakerphone mode.

HP’s announcement of the Pre 3 today comes a bit premature as the company is announcing that the Pre 2 for CDMA networks will only be available for pre-order starting tomorrow.

Both devices are evolutionary additions to the webOS smartphone lineup from HP/Palm.
