HTC Desire HD Ice Cream Sandwich Update Cancelled

Published

on

While TELUS originally promised to upgrade the HTC Desire HD with Ice Cream Sandwich, it appears now that the HTC Desire HD Ice Cream Sandwich has been cancelled.

According to TELUS’ new upgrade timeline, courtesy of MobileSyrup, the HTC Desire HD will not be getting the upgrade to Ice Cream Sandwich 4.0.

The reason is apparently because the device did not perform up to snuff when HTC put it through testing with the software on board.

Clearly, this isn’t the news that HTC Desire HD owners on TELUS, or really, HTC Desire HD owners in general, wanted to hear, but that’s what it has come to.

It looks like the HTC Desire HD ICS update has been cancelled.

Of course, while the news comes from a specific carrier’s documentation, this isn’t good news for HTC Desire HD owners worldwide,  especially when TELUS says it was HTC, not it, that cancelled the update.

So, we’re going to assume that this means that the HTC Desire HD, in general, will never see the upgrade from Android 2.3 Gingerbread to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.

HTC originally confirmed Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich for the HTC Desire HD back in February and said that it would roll out the software update later in the year.

The manufacturer is also debating whether it will be upgrading the HTC Droid Incredible 2 with Android 4.0 with a decision to come by August. So, it’s certainly possible that the HTC Desire HD won’t be the only big name phone not to see the upgrade to Android 4.0 ICS.

At the moment though, it walks alone.

How are you HTC Desire HD owners feeling now that the bad news has been dished out?

Don’t be too disappointed! Rooting the Desire HD is very easy and once you’ve done that you can flash Ice Cold Sandwich, which is a great ROM and has been my daily driver for months now. Plus nobody really wants all that Sense bloatware crap :-)

I’m pretty choked that HTC, or Telus, or both have decided to go this route. I have cm7.2 on my phone, but rooting a Telus DHD was a huge pain in the butt (easier with the tools now) and there are those who meither want to root nor have the knowledge to do so. Should they be relegated to using an old OS? not with the DHDs hardware.

This is not the news I was hoping for. While I am using Ice Cold Sandwich, it is a far cry from what I want. Daily driver? Yes. Up to snuff? No. I appreciate the work that the people have done to progress Ice Cold Sandwich to where it is, it isn’t fully functional. Bloatware or not, I want the official release. Why? Working video camera (no, I will not find another app for it), fully functioning MMS (incoming and outgoing) and no lockups and reboots. ICS 8.whatever is cool, but after running it for a few months now, I am ready to go back to AT&T/HTC’s Gingerbread crap.

I suppose I could wait another year and a half to upgrade to an ICS phone, but by then, Jellybean OS phones would have been out for 6 months.

THis is only true to TELUS Desire HD users, the official HTC blog about ICS updates didn’t remove the Desire HD on the list, so don’t generalize everything…
