HTC One Android 4.2 Update Release Date Up in the Air

Published

on

One of the biggest mysteries surrounding the HTC One at the moment, now that it has finally hit shelves, is when it will be getting the upgrade to Android 4.2 Jelly Bean to bring it up to speed with the Samsung Galaxy S4. And while we heard some timing rumored in the past, a specific release date still eludes customers using HTC’s new flagship phone.

The HTC One, which was released in the United States just a few short days ago after a delay, is currently running an older version of Android in Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. Android 4.1 Jelly Bean arrived all the way back in July of last year, alongside the aging Nexus 7 tablet.

The HTC One Android 4.2 release date is still unknown, even unofficially.

Many thought that given the HTC One’s age, that it would arrive with the latest version of Android on board, however, as we learned, that wasn’t the case at all and HTC, for whatever reason, passed on Android 4.2 Jelly Bean which is currently available on the Galaxy S4 and a handful of other Android devices. Unsurprisingly, owners have been wondering where the update might be, especially since HTC has refused to comment on the software’s whereabouts.

@sevenalive No ETAs at the moment…

Previously, we had heard that the update was pegged for one to two months after the device’s release, pegging it for April, May or June time frame depending on the region it was released in. We imagine that this date was for the global unbranded devices and not carrier attached devices which typically see their updates arrive much later.

And as we get closer to that unofficial time frame, the originator of that rumor, @LlabTooFer, has been silent about specifics and it appears that a specific ETA for the update’s arrival still remains unknown.

In response to a question about the update’s whereabouts, the noted HTC developer and leakster claims that he has no ETA on the specific release date for the update, a sign that owners could still be a ways away from receiving the new software. And if Google does announce a new version of Android at Google I/O, it could mean that the HTC One, HTC’s current flagship, will be two major Android updates behind some devices.

It’s unclear if HTC will announce a date or if it will simply start rolling out the HTC One Android 4.2 update. It’s also unclear how long the gap between unbranded and branded roll outs will be.

With the HTC One X, we saw a huge discrepancy in roll out timing between those two models so it could be that AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile owners are facing a lengthy wait for the most current version of Android.

Android 4.2 Jelly Bean is a fairly big upgrade from Android 4.1 as it features more features for Google Now, lock screen widgets, a new Quick Settings menu, and more.

How many engineers would it take to update your flagship phone to the current 4.2? Ridiculous! It’s a “shiny” phone that many primates will fall for at it’s release, but 6 months from now that shine will fade and I the crowd is going to start throwing their own feces at HTC for now supporting the updates.

To me 4.2 was more an update for Nexus devices most of the features were already available on other Android devices and it wasn’t much of a change. To me it doesn’t really matter that the HTC One is on 4.1 and after Google I/O it certainly won’t be two MAJOR versions behind. (You say 4.2 brought Google Now updates but this would just be updated with the Google Search App).
Shen Ye said on reddit that he’d had a beta/alpha build of 4.2 on his One about a month ago and that he thought it should be out within a month.

Hmmm, of course they won’t give a eta, not unless is due very soon. Anyways it add hardly anything. Look towards klp and get a nexus if you want prompt updates.

Honestly, apart from geeks, who really cares?

The differences between Sense on HTC One and stock are far bigger than the differences between 4.1 and 4.2. I doubt most people would notice the changes under the Sense UI. There was nothing really wrong with 4.1 so as a user, I don’t personally see much benefit and I’d rather HTC be concentrating on 5 and forget about 4.2

Provided, HTC One is among the first devices to get 5.0(Of Course HTC has to make sure about that), both locked and unlocked!

Lockscreen widgets is a huge deal to me. Also, the expandable notifications are very useful. If you don’t appreciate the differences from 4.1 to 4.2.2 then you simply haven’t used them both. In which case good for you cause you aren’t missing anything.

One of the biggest mysteries of this article is what the HTC One is missing from 4.1 – 4.2 and how such a major update only receives 0.1 towwards the next big update Android 5.0.

I heard they waiting on 4.3. .4.2 is a tablet update. It brings nothing to Sense
