Published

on

Late last month HTC confirmed many of its popular and most recent Android smartphones would receive an upgrade to the latest Android 5.0 Lollipop update, and now we’ve received additional details regarding when those may actually arrive for users.

Back in October Google announced three new products and the all-new Android 5.0 Lollipop. Previously called the Android L release, and it’s finally available as of yesterday on the brand new HTC Nexus 9 tablet. However, those with smartphones, including the HTC One or One M8 are probably wondering when their phones will receive the latest software.

The Android L release was first announced in June as an update to the latest Android 4.4.4 KitKat, a version of Android that HTC had yet to even release on its smartphones, but now they’re up to speed and promising quick updates within 90 days of Android 5.0 Lollipops release date.

Last month HTC followed along with Samsung, Motorola, LG and others and announced some light details regarding when users can expect to see an update to Android 5.0 Lollipop, but yesterday we received the final word everyone has been waiting for.

Yesterday HTC’s VP of product management took to Twitter and confirmed the company has indeed received Android 5.0 Lollipop and the entire source code from Google, then confirmed that many of HTC’s phones will be updated within 90 days from that date.

The clock starts now. Stating that both the HTC One (2013) and the new HTC One M8 will both be updated to the latest Android 5.0 Lollipop, and probably a new HTC Sense, within 90 days. Meaning that sometime between today and the end of January.

HTC has promised that at least two of its main HTC One smartphones will be updated to the latest software within 90 days, and then they’ll continue on to other less popular devices like the HTC One Mini, the HTC One Max, the new Desire Eye, and a few other smartphones released in 2013 and 2014.

Then of course devices outside the US will see updates too, but the one mentioned above will get priority. The HTC Desire EYE, HTC One Dual Sim, HTC One E8, HTC Butterfly 2 any many other smartphones outside of the US aren’t quite as urgent, but can look forward to seeing the same Sense based Android 5.0 update arrive anytime between January and March. Rather than the 90 day window.

Other reports from different sources claim some older or less popular devices like the HTC One Mini 2, Desire 816 will get it around March, and phones like the original HTC One Mini and HTC One Max from last year are being targeted for a release around March-May. That leaves a lot to be desired for potential users, and hopefully better timetables and more details arrive sooner rather than later.

This all being said, those with the HTC One and HTC One M8 can look forward to the new Android 5.0 Lollipop update within the next 90 days, and hopefully before the end of the year. We’ll update once we know more.
