HTC One X Android 4.4 & Android 4.3 Updates as Good as Dead

Published

on

In response to a question about the prospects on an AT&T HTC One X Android 4.4 KitKat update, HTC USA claims that the device will indeed get Android 4.2 Jelly Bean but that the company may not roll out anything after the Android 4.2 update and Sense 5, meaning, the prospects of an Android 4.3 update or Android 4.4 update are slim to none.

For months now, we’ve been hearing whispers suggesting that the HTC One X may not get anything past Android 4.2 Jelly Bean and Sense 5. And while nothing is set in stone, HTC USA has seemingly hammered the nails further into the coffin not only for HTC One X owners in the United States but HTC One X owners across the globe.

HTC USA says that as of right now, it does not have any future Android or Sense plans beyond the Android 4.2 Jelly Bean update for the HTC One X. This is the first time that we’ve seen the company offer up this candid information to HTC One X owners and it’s information that unfortunately backs what we’ve been hearing for weeks now.

Of course, the company is quick to leave the door open, saying that if plans do in fact change, that it will let users know. So while the coffin isn’t sealed on an HTC One X Android 4.3 or Android KitKat update for AT&T users, it’s close. If the AT&T HTC One X doesn’t get these updates then we doubt that other HTC One X owners will get the software.

Sadly, this type of support isn’t unusual given that the HTC One X is going on two years old and HTC typically keeps devices updated for 18 months before killing off support. It’s something that we’ve seen with numerous HTC smartphones and we even saw Google use the same excuse with the Galaxy Nexus Android 4.4 KitKat update.

At this point, all HTC One X owners should be tempering their expectations and start getting used to having Android 4.2 Jelly Bean and Sense 5 on board. Users who aren’t content with this software should be able to lean on the development community, not HTC, for assistance.

It would be nice for One X owners to get 4.3, but what new features would it offer? HTC sure as heck isn’t gonna give a year and a half old device Sense 5.5, and updating the Android version without Sense improvements would be a waste of resources, since 4.3 does not bring any major features to the table that weren’t already offered in 4.2.

Asking for 4.3 is getting a bit pushy (I don’t care how far Samsung updates the GS3). Thinking 4.4 was ever in sight is plain nonsense.

I think it’s perfectly acceptable to be disappointed. The One X was touted as their “flagship” device for 2012. It’s not even 2014 now and support has suddenly just ended? I don’t know about you, but when I think flagship, I think prolonged support, even after a new round of devices are released. I can understand ending support for lower-end devices such as the One V or the One S, but flagship models are $600+ devices and to end support for them after only 18 months is just plain ridiculous.

If I ever buy another HTC device, then it will be a Nexus or Google Edition. I will never buy another one with HTCs crappy firmware where support disappears early.

Too bad for HTC though … until this I had bought 9 HTC phones for friends and family. Last month I bought my dad a Samsung G4 … no more HTC software for me.

Since contracts are usually at least 2 years long, they should give updates for a minimum 2 years… Especially for their flagships. If I ever buy HTC again, it will be a Nexus Edition…. Or I will buy (Nexus 5 or whatever Nexus is out at the time). Just to say, my 2 first smarthphones were HTC and both were considered flagships when they went out (HTC Desire, and HTC One X+)…

For years now i have been a big fan of HTC products. However given the experience i have witht hem updating older devices eventhough they where the flagship at the moment of purchase, it is very unlikely my next phone will be an HTC. I think Google Nexus might be the right choice for me, as other brands such Sony, Samsung and LG have similar habbits to HTC of being late with updates, or not even update at all!

Best of luck to HTC, but from my point of view, i guess their future looks darker by the day.

No more HTC products for me. Total lack of support for updates on a phone slightly over a year old underscores HTC’s lack of commitment to their customers and doesn’t warrant any of my hard earned cash!
