The HTC ThunderBolt Ice Cream Sandwich update, which was originally promised to be out by August and was said to be coming soon will apparently not be arriving until at least 2013 as the update remains missing heading into next year.

Since August, HTC ThunderBolt owners have been left in the dark in regards to their update to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, an update that would free them from the clutches of Android 2.3 Gingerbread, a piece of software that was released in early December of 2010 meaning its now over two years old. And despite heavy backlash and questions from the press and owners of the device, HTC and Verizon still have not said when the software might be arriving.

The HTC ThunderBolt Ice Cream Sandwich update remains missing into 2013.

Earlier this month, we saw a few different stories emerge in regards to the HTC ThunderBolt Ice Cream Sandwich update. The first, a tale of two HTC representatives. One rep claimed that Verizon had canceled the update as it preferred the device to be on Gingerbread. Another HTC representative denied that saying that company reps had not yet heard that the update was cancelled.

The second representative’s statement was seemingly confirmed by HTC USA who claimed that the update was to “be here soon.” Just how soon, the company wouldn’t say and now owners are heading into 2013 without any sort of a clue as to when the update might be released.

HTC has said that it is still trying to smooth out some connectivity issues that it has been having with the update, the same issues the company has blamed for the delay of the Droid Incredible 2 Ice Cream Sandwich update. The Droid Incredible 2 Ice Cream Sandwich update was also expected to arrive by the end of August only to be delayed. Both updates now remain in limbo heading into the new year, something that no one expected when HTC put up its time table for the software updates.

And with the HTC ThunderBolt’s two year birthday (in March) and thus, the end of owners two-year agreements fast approaching, owners, at least those that are left, are surely hoping to see a decision one way or the other before March arrives.

Adam, why do you continue writing these articles about the HTC thunderbolt. It’s the same news but different times. Please update us when there is an update. Thanks.

I agree that Adam is basically stating the same news every other week with regards to the Tbolt. However, as a Tbolt owner, I hope that Adam continues. His voice has become a small thorn in the side of HTC/Verizon. Constantly nagging. Also, other news articles have spawned off of Adam’s reporting on the Tbolt. This update fiasco is a pretty solid black eye on the face of HTC/Verizon.

As of right now, I don’t see myself purchasing another HTC phone. The Tbolt has been a nightmare, and if it wasn’t for the Tbolt DEV community, I’d be stuck with a total POS stock rom. If ICS isn’t released, there is no way I’d ever go near another HTC phone.

So Adam…. keep up the good work.

Completely agree. Nexus or Samsung from here on out. Waiting on the S IV or nexus 4 lte (if there ever is one). Having a Thunderbolt has truly been a tortuous test of patience.

I too am waiting on HTC and appreciate that Adam has stuck to this story. If we stop asking, they won’t deliver.

Thanks again Adam, keep after them. Your voice and visibilty are much greater than we as customers can bring individually.

Funny, I don’t have any connectivity issues with the custom ROM I’m running on my Tbolt.

I’m so frustrated now that I’m willing to try a custom ROM. Can you recommend a link that would explain how to go about doing that?

Haven’t had too many issues since the update release in May, but let’s face it … Jelly Bean is already out and has been for a while and we are still waiting on it’s predecessor. I do love HTC, in fact, this is my second one. I chose it purposely because of the HTC brand and my previous experience. Now, I am definitely considering other brands for my upgrade.

Well early in December I tossed in the towel and got myself a Samsung Galaxy Note 2, ditching my Thunderbolt and man what a good move it has been. Unlocked and rooted, running a custom ROM loving it. This phone is blazing fast and makes the Thunderbolt look like a slug. The screen is gorgeous and obviously superior. No more annoying messed up digitizer either.

Best part? I got the phone at subsidized price AND kept unlimited data. So boo-hoo to you HTC and Verizon. I’ve moved past you HTC and get to keep blowing up my data connection monthly, in your faces ya greedy bastards.

How did you get it subsidized and keep unlimited data

I was tired of waiting for ICS updates as well; so I moved on to Samsung Galaxy Note 2 with Jelly Bean. Good riddance TB. The SGN2 make the TB look and function like something from the 1960s. I’m so glad I moved on.

It is amusing to come back here and see what the ICS status is for the TB. It goes like this… “Anticipated TB ICS update slated to probably be released this upcoming _____”. (Insert any major holiday into the blank space and you have all your future headlines).

Verizon doesn’t want us to update our dinosaurs, instead they want us to buy new phones, simple as that.

And that is the issue. Pure economics.

If I can upgrade my existing TB then all the better (I save money and keep my current contract). If I have to purchase a new phone again then I have to look at all of the ones on the market and I’ll probably review my carrier choice as well. We’ll see if Verizon wants to keep their customers – or not.

I got this response today. My name is Zach and I am happy to help you today regarding the ICS update for the HTC Thunderbolt. The latest update from HTC came last month stating that the ICS update is still coming “soon” with no real release date given. I know this is frustrating though from what I read HTC is still working out connectivity issues as the software update being released in its current form would likely cause more problems than it would fix. Additionally, I’ve read that the specs on the Thunderbolt (such as only a single core 1GHz processor and 768 Megabyte RAM) make developing a version of Android 4.0 difficult without causing the phone’s performance to drag significantly since the device is two years old at this point. As far as what I’ve heard from HTC (as they are responsible for developing and testing the software) the update is still on track to be delivered to the phone, it’s just taking a bit longer than they expected. I appreciate your patience.

Thank you for the update. My wife is using my thunderbolt for the last year when I upgraded to the gnex. She has been “dealing” with the phone’s issues. Had I known the update was going to keep getting bumped, I would have never given it to her. And no custom ROM seems 100% stable. This is my last HTCnphone and my last Verizon contract, and I have been with them for 12 years. Switching to monthly plan with nexus 4 or whatever the next one is.

I waited for as long as I could then two weeks ago, I rooted via Revolutionary. A few days later I took the jump and downloaded BAMF’s ICS leak and so far I’ve been quite happy. If you can pause and play a you tube video and follow picture instructions, then take a look at it. This even gets rid of the ota update so you won’t brick the phone on an unintentional update….if it was to ever come.
Hi I am a Thunderbolt running Android 4.0.3 with HTC Sense 3.6
