HTC ThunderBolt ICS Update Testing in Final Stages, Roll Out by End of October?

Published

on

The HTC ThunderBolt Ice Cream Sandwich update that has been delayed since the end of August, might finally roll out to ThunderBolt owners by the end of October.

We received a tip today from a reader who says that Verizon informed them, through a phone call, that the HTC ThunderBolt Ice Cream Sandwich update is in the final stages of testing and that Verizon currently plans to roll it out by the end of October.

The person is a HTC ThunderBolt owner who sent Verizon an email venting frustration over the Ice Cream Sandwich delay. And much to their surprise, Verizon called them and relayed the above information. It’s unclear at this point whether Verizon has begun telling other inquiring HTC ThunderBolt owners something similar or if this person just so happened to get information they weren’t supposed to.

So at this point, while this seems to be pretty credible, HTC ThunderBolt owners will still want to circle the month of October in pencil but we wouldn’t get excited just yet.

It appears that the HTC ThunderBolt ICS update might roll out this month.

That’s because there is always a possibility that something might go wrong in testing, delaying the software even further than it already has been delayed. We know HTC and Verizon have been working on this update since the delay back in August and it appears that we could be closer than ever to a decision on the update.

As of  now, HTC and Verizon remain mum on the whereabouts of the update, only saying that the software is being worked on and that they would provide more information as it becomes available. We assume that this is because the update is still in testing, again possibly in the final stages, and because they haven’t yet determined an official roll out date.

Unfortunately, we haven’t heard anything in regards to the Droid Incredible 2 Ice Cream Sandwich update, an update that was delayed alongside the HTC ThunderBolt ICS update, though we imagine that HTC and Verizon are currently working on that one as well.

At the very least, the silence means that they still haven’t cancelled the update and if today’s rumor proves fruitful, it may actually roll out to ThunderBolt owners at some point this month.

We’ll keep digging and update you on what we find.

I’m in the final stages of kicking HTC to the curb and I’ll be rolling that out very very soon.

Exactly! End of October is far too late! Contract is up in November.

I never had an issue with my Thunderbolt (except for the crappy battery life). I have the same original phone that I bought from it’s release and its still going strong. Although I’ve been disappointed overall with the delays for the ICS update, I’m willing to wait to see what improvements (if any) that ICS may give us Last-of-a-dying-breed Thunderbolt owners before I jump ship for the Samsung Galaxy S3 when my upgrade come due next month. *fingers crossed*

Yet another ‘end of the month’ promise? Sheesh! Next one will be that the Easter Bunny is bringing us ICS…

    I’m not holding my breath.
When I bought this phone, I switched to VZW and bought the “of course it’ll be updated to ICS!” line… because “we wouldn’t call it ‘not your next phone, it’s the one after that’ AND it’s our flagship 4gLTE phone.”
    Yeah, I’m a sucker, I guess…
While I blame HTC in-part, I blame VZW mostly for feeding me a crock of s__t more.
While I may, or may not drop HTC (loved ’em since the original Evo), I’m definitely kicking VZW to the curb when my contract expires in August.

I will never buy another HTC product. If I could get rid of Verizon, would do that also.
Terrible customer service, they do not give a c–p. if they hold out long enough, will get a new phone purchase out of it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I’m still lock in on a contract, so not point in getting stressful.
Yeah, they(HTC and VZW) got me. Fool me once, same on…you know how the rest goes.

I install ICS leak and it is working very well. Few issues, but very solid. Don’t see why it would be delayed.

I called Verizon 4 days ago and the Verizon rep told me that the thunderbolt wouldn’t be updated to ics at all. Something about the phone was not built to hold that large of an update.

It will hold that large an update because it HAS. The problem is that the performance is not acceptable, primarily because the processor is only a single core. They cannot release ICS unless they get at least the same performance as they got with Gingerbread.

If this is true – which Im sure is a BIG if, then this might hold me over for a bit. Otherwise, I am def upgrading in January to the Galaxy S3. Then my phone can talk directly to my Samsung TV.

I too am an original Thunderbolter and received my phone April 2011. I’ve had a few hiccups but the updates seemed to have smoothed it out. I have also had problems with battery life, but forcinging it to CDMA (3G) makes the battery life definitely longer.
I began to look for another phone for when my contracts expires but for what I have needed and what I will need, I don’t see why going to another phone makes sense…except to have the greatest and latest. And really isn’t that most of our complaints…we don’t have the latest and we feel we’re out of touch??

I have had nothing but problems with My Thunderbolts (Have had it replaced more then 10 times) I have always had problems with Text messages getting cut in half and the second half never coming thru. Have had several time where forced update comes thru and then the phone will just start rebooting all the time. Head phone jacks going bad, camera not working if the flash is turned on. GPS messed up and when I try to use app it had me jumping all over the map and directions app would not work. I have 3 batteries for it and just carry the extras if I think I am going to be using it a lot. 4G will not finish starting a Youtube video so I have to shut 4G off so I can watch the video with 3G. If I factory reset it I can get about 2 weeks of usage out of it before it starts just going to S***. Yes I am ready for a different phone for sure. I would really hate to sell my sole to Apple but if I can not find a Droid phone more stable then this thing has been I will.

hoping that it is not BS. It would be nice to freshen up the phone a bit so I can hold off a few more months on the upgrade and give Verizon the finger. All the carriers such big hairy dog c–k but what can you do. Thinking of going to AT&T and getting the new Nokia 920.

WOW! I can’t believe my ears. It’s amazing how many of thease post and post on other forums say something like “I’m done with HTC”.
Really? HTC has to make the update ready for the TB that they present to VZW. VZW then tries to modify that update to “”lock it down” & stop the features of ICS from being used for free i.e. the free 4g hotspot that was in the TB until VZW locked it down. NOW HTC has to make the modified update work on the phone.
The blame lies squarely on the shoulders of VZW.

Considering how poorly this has been handled, I can definately say I will never purchase another HTC product again and, if possible, will be leaving Verizon as well. My contract is done next month. Couldn’t come soon enough.

I’ve been with VZW for over ten years and upgraded to the Thunderbolt in April of 2011. The phone was marketed as the new fast 4G phone with free wifi hotspot for several initial months as LTE was rolled out and the bugs were worked out of that network. VZW also completely marketed the phone with it’s unlimited data plan to lure people into buying it as well and then crapped on them trying to force their shared data plan down our throats. Talk about bait and switch. I believe rooting your phone(and others in this same situation) to avoid these increased costs to get what was sold to you is fair play considering what VZW has done to it’s customers. VZW is turning it’s company into a fee gouging bank type style of business and I believe it will hurt them in the long run. Shame, shame, shame on you Verizon Wireless.

I just talked to a verizon representative who kept raving about the update unprovoked. I originally called about repair and when I mentioned the last update ruined my battery, she brought up ics.She also said “CHECK FOR THE ICS UPDATE WHEN YOU HANG UP.” Of course, I checked and there was no update. This adds to my frustration because my charger port broke yesterday adding to the list of this phones ailments. She gave me HTC’s Repair center since verizon no longer carrys the phone. The HTC representative, before i told him my problems, told me he “CAN’T give me a quote.” He also said “I would have to SEND MY PHONE IN and they would price my repair based on damages.” DONE WITH VERIZON. DONE WITH HTC.

I agree with all comments listed here. My contract with VZW is up in March 2013, the Thunderbolt has been a pain in the rear. The nickle and dime fees of VZW and shared data plan is crap, going back to either Sprint or T-mobile. Anyone have any suggestions???
