HTC ThunderBolt Reboot Fix Coming Soon, Verizon Offering Trade-In to Those Affected?

Published

on

HTC and Verizon are well aware of the random reboot issues that have been plaguing the HTC ThunderBolt since it was updated earlier this month. In fact, it appears that Verizon is on the verge of releasing a fix for the issues as its apparently ready and will head to Verizon employess with ThunderBolt’s first and then to the general public if all goes smoothly.

In addition, it appears that some ThunderBolt owners affected by the issue have been told by customer service to waltz into a retail store and swap their ThunderBolt plagued with reboot issues for a brand new one. It’s unknown how many people have had this offer extended to them but it’s unlikely to be many.

The reps also apparently made sure to tell them not to accept a ThunderBolt with the latest update on board.

This trouble all began back on May 12th when ThunderBolt owners received what appeared to be a fantastic update from Verizon that promised better 3G connectivity and a bunch of fixes and enhancements.

Shortly after, ThunderBolt owners started seeing random reboots that happened without any sort of provocation.  HTC and Verizon then announced that they were aware of the issue and that they would be working together on a fix.

Has anyone successfully been able to trade in their old ThunderBolt for a new one? Or were you shot down by customer service reps?

I have been getting random reboots since about 2 weeks after I got the phone on March 21.   At first it wasn’t that bad but it was progressively getting worse.   I took it to the Verizon store at the begining of May before the update came out and they did a hard reboot.   It worked decent for about a week and then started rebooting again.   Eventually it got the point where it wouldn’t let me make phone calls, send text, or even get on the internet.   I brought it back again and they changed the SIM card.   As i was walking out the door it started doing it again so i brought it back in and the finally decided to give me a new one.  Now lets see how this one holds up.

I was able to trade in the TB that was giving me problems after I initially installed the update on May 13th. I thought that I was going to receive a new TB, but I instead received a “Certified Like New” TB. At first I was a little disappointed because of my TB replacement not being new, but it is not that bad. The phone didn’t have a dings or scratches. It looks like a new phone. Also, I installed the OTA update again on my replaced TB, and to my surprise, everything is working perfectly! My TB is working!!!!!

I purchased the TB on May 18 and after only a week, I’ve been having this problem.  I hope Verizon/HTC fix the problem because I got rid of the horrible Blackberry Storm 1 for this damn expensive “fancy” phone that seems to be functioning the same.

I called and they had me do a Master Factory Reset, my 3rd since I have had the phone. It seems to have done the trick though. Give it a try, I do notice the better 3G also. I am in a great 4G area but just cannot accept my battery being dead by noon so I turn off 4G. Hopefully Ginerbread will help with the battery issues.

The battery life after the update is worse than before for me when I am on 4G.

Random rebooting here as well. Did the factory reset as suggested and it started random rebooting within hours. Replacement ‘Certified’ phone is on it’s way tomorrow. I have no confidence that the replacement will be any better, but I hope I’m wrong.

After finally admitting the issue was a known one, and only after I called customer service and had them mark my account as such, would the store swap mine for a brand new one.

Originally the reps in the store were quite rude and said to bug off because they needed to see the issue for themselves. I obviously wasn’t going to spend a day a the store waiting for it to reboot with them looking over my shoulder. They were quite uninterested in helping me as eagerly as they were when they sold me the phone!

I have been having random reboots also. I have called verizon many times and was told they were aware of it and then I could try and pull the battery or do a hard reset on the phone. I did a hard reset and have regretted it ever since because I had to reinstall and resetup all my apps and settings. And it still reboots. And I still have trouble with battery life. And I still have trouble with wifi hotspot and tethering keeping a persistent internet connection. But I am happy with the phone. because I am optimistic that they will fix these problems.

Got the TB in March.   Worked fine.   Had the update loaded and the thing started re-booting at random.  Contacted VZW who agreed to send me a replacement unit overnight.   On arrival it powered up,  I restored my contacts and re-installed my apps.   Worked great….  for  4 hours.  Started rebooting itself at random again.  It even reboots in the middle of a phone call.

I emailed HTC with the issue,  they recommended I restart the phone in Safe Mode for 24 hours and let them know the results if it re-booted.  I did enter Safe Mode per their instructions, however the only thing that actually works in Safe Mode is the phone –  no  apps,  no text messaging, no email, no browser.  Just a piece of junk to make phone calls on.  I returned it back to normal without accepting their 24 hour test recommendation and still notice it reboots at random.

I called VZW again and asked I upgrade to a LG Revolution.  They agreed to do this, however had none in stock and had no schedule as to if/when there would be one available to send me.

Until HTC / VZW comes up with a patch for this,  I advise you to stay away from this piece of garbage.

I swapped mine out twice with no issues (On 3rd Thunderbolt now). However, on the second one, they told me to go ahead and accept the update/patch. I did and had the same issue. On the 3rd, I kept declining/postponing the update, but it forced me to put in a postpone time. I kept up with it for about a week, and then missed the decline screen, and saw it start the patch. Now the 3rd one has the same issue. I am even rebooting in the middle of phone calls. That has caused some awkward moments with co-workers…

Verizon will not help you in any way. Have had my thunderbolt for a month at top dollar and they want us to accept a used phone….

Just an FYI – I never have a problem with rebooting on my TB if I stay in my 3G area – only when I cross over between 3G/LTE.  Problem mainly occurs while driving and switching between the two.

My Thunderbolt started randomly rebooting on its own about a month and a half ago, it did this probably once a week or so.  I contacted Verizon and they sent me a rebuilt (like-new) replacement.  When I got the replacement, the case was cracked so I called Verizon and they apologized and asked me to send it back and that they would send me another rebuilt phone.  When I received the second, the power button was recessed and hard to turn the phone on.  I called Verizon again and they apologized once again and they told me that Verizon was advised to not swap out phones because a software update was coming out that would fix this problem.  I was okay with that as my phone is practically brand new and looked much better than the two like-new phones they initially sent me.  It is now almost July and now my phone is self-rebooting every day and Verizon still has not released the software update.
I originally asked if I could walk into a store and swap my phone for a new one but according to Verizon and HTC, that is not the way they operate.
If they don’t come out with a software upgrade soon, I will be forced to get a new phone and I will not accept a rebuilt like-new phone.  I would threaten to switch to a new carrier but Verizon is the strongest here in Charleston, SC and Sprint and the other carriers get horrible service….I know this personally…so I am sort of stuck between the proverbial rock and a a hard place….

BTW…I never really liked Verizon.  I was a loyal Alltel customer and was forced to use Verizon’s service.  Alltel would have never treated me like this; they would have offered me a brand new phone hands down.

Try a hard reset. That may fix it. Here is how to do it.
