Huawei Confirms Ascend W1’s Announcement at CES

Published

After much speculation, Huawei has confirmed that the company’s first Windows Phone 8 device, the Ascend W1, will be formally introduced in early January at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. The Ascend W1 smartphone has been rumored to be a mid-range Windows Phone 8 device. Confirmation of the device comes by way of a posting by high-level Huawei executive Yu Chendong on a Chinese micro-blogging site.

The Ascend W1’s leaked specs include a dual-core CPU, 512 MB RAM, 5-megapixel camera, and just 512 MB of RAM. It’s still unclear if the Ascend W1 will be sold in the U.S., but if it does go on sale in the States, it would have to be affordably priced to compete against already competitive pricing from devices from HTC and Nokia.

In addition to the Ascend W1, Huawei has also been rumored in the past to be working on a high-end Windows Phone 8 smartphone in the form of the Ascend W2. It’s unclear if the W2 will also debut at CES as well.

Outside of Windows Phone 8, Huawei may also make some Android product announcements at the electronics technology show as well. The company may also introduced its highly anticipated first phablet-class device, though it’s unclear how pocketable such a device would be. Recent leaks suggest that Huawei’s Android phablet may have a display size upwards of 8 inches.
