At Mobile World Congress, not only did rising Chinese smartphone-manufacturer Huawei announce the company’s first smartphone in the form of the Ascend D Quad and Ascend D Quad XL smartphones–akin to Motorola’s Droid RAZR and Droid RAZR Maxx where the latter XL moniker denotes a device with a more capacious battery, but the company also announced that these new devices will be running on its own quad-core CPU. Dubbed the K3V2, Huawei’s quad-core offerings will go head-to-head with NVIDIA’s Tegra 3 devices, of which one was announced in the form of the HTC One X smartphone.

Huawei will be joining big names in the mobile processor game, including Texas Instruments, Samsung, NVIDIA, Qualcomm, and Marvell with the K3V2. The processor will ship with either a 1.2 or 1.5 GHz clock speed and Huawei will be using four-A9 cores with a 64-bit architecture.

Also packaged with the processor will be a 16-core graphics processor. In Huawei’s MWC presentation, the company showed benchmarking results that were impressive. The K3V2’s GPU performance had beaten out the Galaxy Nexus and the Transformer Prime tablet, the latter of which uses NVIDIA’s Tegra 3 quad-core CPU coupled with the company’s GeForce graphics engine.

According to Huawei, K3V2 offers “twice the graphics performance, is 49 percent faster in purely CPU-powered tasks and uses 30 percent less power than its competitors.”

Powered by the Huawei’s K3V2 quad-core 1.2GHz/1.5GHz processor and boasting the most compact design among 4.5-inch smartphones, the Ascend D quad expands the realm of possibilities for consumers with an Android 4.0 operating system and Huawei’s proprietary power management system which provides up to 30% in energy savings.

The Ascend D Quad will be available in Q2, so that’s when we’ll first begin to see the K3V2.
