Instagram, which was recently bought out by Facebook for $1 billion, has seen its Android application top the five million download mark in the apps first six days of existence on the Google Play Store.

The milestone, reported by The Next Web, comes after the application saw one million downloads on its first day on the Android marketplace. It’s also a sign that the application, despite its initial bumps, is catching on with Android users.

Instagram for Android is a free application that allows users to to capture, filter and share photos with followers.

While the software has been out for quite some time on Apple’s iOS powered devices, Android users had to wait. That wait came to an end last week when Instagram finally unleashed the application to users.

Problem was, the application, like some other recent major Android launches, included compatibility issues and bugs.

Instagram, for its part, has been extremely diligent about updating the application releasing three updates since the application’s launch. The first two updates were intended to patch up some of the bugs that had been plaguing users since launch while the third update brought support to owners of Android tablets.

On the heels of this came the announcement that Instagram had been bought by Facebook for $1 billion. It’s unclear right now which direction the application is going to take with Facebook now at the helm.

Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Facebook, has said that the application will remain a separate entity, and will still allow for users to share on sites other than Facebook.
