iOS 10.1.1 Problems: 5 Things You Need to Know

Published

on

Apple’s iOS 10.1.1 update brings key bug fixes but it also brings problems. Here, we take a look at what iPhone, iPad and iPod touch owners need to know about iOS 10.1.1 problems as we push into the new year.

In September, Apple released its long-awaited iOS 10 update. The upgrade delivered a number of positive changes to the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. It also delivered some problems to those that upgraded from iOS 9 and below.

To address iOS 10 problems, Apple’s pushed out a series of bug fix updates. The latest is an iOS 10.1.1 update for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch that comes with a fix for broken Health app data.

iOS updates, even small bug fix updates like iOS 10.1.1, always bring problems with them. And many iOS 10.1.1 users are running into trouble.

With that in mind we want to touch on the current state of iOS 10.1.1 problems for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch and provide you with the most important information you need to know ahead Apple’s next iOS 10 update.

This roundup includes a look at fixes for iOS 10.1.1 problems, places to find feedback about your specific update, how to downgrade to an older version of iOS, and more.

iOS 10.1.1 Problems

While the iOS 10.1.1 update is working fine for some iPhone, iPad and iPod touch owners, others are running into iOS 10.1.1 problems.

iphone-ios-10-1-1

We’re hearing about various iOS 10.1.1 installation problems including an issue where downloads are locking up.

If this happens to you, hold down the home button and the power button (power button and volume down button on the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus) until the phone reboots. This typically fixes the issue.

We’re also hearing about a serious issue that’s causing iPhones to lock up and freeze.

Reddit users have discovered an issue wherein an MP4 file from a link sent via iMessage will cause any phone running iOS 10 to lockup. We’ve tested the issue on devices running iOS 10.1.1 and iOS 10.2 beta and the issue is present on both.

To recover from the crash, you must hold down the home button and power button (power/volume down on the iPhone 7) to reboot the phone.

More recently, the iPhone 6s and its unexpected shutdown issues have made headlines.

The unexpected shutdown issues are reportedly affecting more than just a few models and iPhone 6s owners are encouraged to check their device’s serial number to see if they’re eligible for a replacement phone.

Apple says it will issue an iOS update next week to address the issues. (We assume the update is iOS 10.2 but this is unconfirmed.)

https://twitter.com/Mr_Mathe/status/798968092365701120

We’re hearing about problems with Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, random reboots, third-party applications, lag, Touch ID, Apple Music, Exchange, 3D Touch, problems, various third-party applications, and photo syncing.

There are also growing complaints about issues with broken earpods and severe battery drain. A report from Forbes notes that iOS 10.1.1 is “causing the microphone of Apple Earpods to malfunction during phone calls.”

Where to Find iOS 10.1.1 Feedback

It’s important for those of you on iOS 10.1.1 to keep an eye on the iOS 10.1.1 update and its performance.

As we move into the fall, you’ll want to dig into performance about your specific iOS 10 update. This feedback will alert you to potential issues. Finding feedback about your iOS 10 update is easy if you know where to look.

ios-10-beta-downgrade-instructions

We’ve put together some reasons to and not to install the iOS 10 update right now. If you’re on the fence about iOS 10 you’ll want to start there.

We’ve been posting our feedback about the iOS 10 update. We’ve taken a look at iOS 10.1.1 on the iPhone 7, iPhone 6siPhone 6, iPhone 5siPhone 5, and iPad. Those roundups should help you get a feel for your version of iOS 10.1.1.

We also recommend keeping an eye on YouTube, Apple’s discussion forums, social media sites like Twitter/Facebook, and the MacRumors forums for additional feedback about Apple’s various iOS 10 updates for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch.

How to Fix iOS 10.1.1 Problems

If you run into an iOS 10.1.1 problem on your device, don’t panic. There’s a good chance there’s a manual fix out there for your issue.

If an iOS 10.1.1 problem problem pops up on your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch, start with our list of fixes for common iOS 10 problems.

This list includes fixes for battery drain, Wi-Fi problems, Bluetooth problems, installation issues, and more.

iOS-10-Maps

If you’re unable to find a solution there, you should head on over to Apple’s discussion forums for iPhone, iPad, Apple Music, and more.

There you’ll find a growing library of fixes for iOS 10.1.1 problems and a helpful community that can and will point you in the right direction.

If that’s still not enough, you can get in contact with Apple Support via Twitter or schedule an appointment to see a Genius at an Apple Store.

Geniuses will run diagnostics on your device and should be able to pinpoint the problem in a matter of minutes.

You Can Still Downgrade to iOS 10.1

If you think dropping back to an older version of the iOS 10 update might improve your device’s performance, you can try that as well.

Apple is no longer signing off on its iOS 9.3.5/iOS 10.0.1/iOS 10.0.2/iOS 10.0.3 updates which means you can no longer take advantage of a loophole and drop down to one of those.

You can, however, still drop down to the iOS 10.1 update if you wish. Of course, there’s no guarantee this will fix your issue so proceed at your own risk.

ipad-ios-9-2-1-10

Apple will likely close up the iOS 10.1 downgrade option in the near future so you’ll want to move quickly if you want to get off iOS 10.1.1.

For more on the iOS 10.1.1 to iOS 10.1 downgrade, look at our guide.

What’s Next

If you’re unable to find a manual fix, you could try upgrading to the iOS 10.2 update. The update comes with a number of key bug fixes though, like iOS 10.1.1, it’s also causing problems for iPhone and iPad users.

ios-10-1

Apple’s also confirmed a brand new iOS 10.2.1 update. The iOS 10.2.1 beta update is available for developers and the general public and it appears to be a small bug fixer with under-the-hood improvements.

This is the next bug fix update for iOS 10 users though it’s unclear when the iOS 10.2.1 update will roll out.

3 Reasons Not to Install iOS 10.3.3 & 9 Reasons You Should

Install iOS 10.3.3 If You Want Better Security

Install iOS 10.3.3 If You Want Better Security

If you value your security, you'll want to seriously consider downloading the iOS 10.3.3 update on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.

iOS 10.3.3 brings 24 security patches addressing vulnerabilities plaguing Contacts, Messages, Notifications, and Safari.

It also includes a patch for a potentially dangerous Wi-Fi exploit dubbed "Broadpwn." That patch alone is a great reason to install iOS 10.3.3 right now or in the immediate future.

If you failed to download previous versions of iOS, your iOS 10.3.3 update will bring even more security features.

If you passed on iOS 10.3.2, iOS 10.3.3 will deliver 23 additional security patches for potentially dangerous issues.

If you skipped iOS 10.3.1, your iOS 10.3.3 update will bring its lone security patch. If you skipped iOS 10.3, iOS 10.3.3 will bring its monster list of patches to your device.

The iOS 10.3 update delivered over 60 known patches for potential exploits. That's substantial, even for a milestone upgrade.

If you skipped the iOS 10.2.1 update and/or the iOS 10.2 update, iOS 10.3.3 brings their security patches with it. The iOS 10.2.1 update had 14 important patches on board. You can see them all right here

If you failed to install Apple's iOS 9.3.5 update, iOS 10.3.3 will also bring the three crucial security patches it delivered last year. These patch up serious security problems that could potentially expose your calls, contacts, texts, and emails.

These patches enhance the security on your iPhone, iPad and iPod touch making them ideal for those of you who store sensitive files/data on your device.

Battery is an issue but that has more to do with apps and games not being optimized for iOS 10 than anything and if you use apps/games that don’t have 64-bit support it will murder your battery (apps/games were required to come with 64-bit support in July 2015). Apps and games that are optimized for iOS 10 the battery tends to be the same as iOS 9.3.5. The main issue I am finding with iOS 10.0.1 is the same issue that plagued iOS 10 since beta 1 which is the random respringing. Respring for non jailbreakers out there just means a soft restart that it doesn’t turn off and back on, it just goes into loop mode then goes back to normal. Today this happened when i went into the battery menu in settings.

I keep my phone as sparse as possible to avoid problems like everyone else is having. I have the 6 and have installed the update. My only complaint is the change to the home button. I find no reason for that to have changed and it is harder to turn off background applications which is probably why everything is noticing a drain on their battery. Updates and some changes are good. But why must they (you) mess with something that was working fine!

Battery drainage is pretty normal for the first few days after installing new iOS software. The software will be running in the background and scanning all of your data. After my iphone updated this morning, a new email setup screen appeared.
Every time I clicked on the email icon it would go to the setup screen.
My solution was to go to settings, mail and click on the email icon to activate.
It now works, after countless hours wasted by myself and my office.
    It now works.
Technology is supposed to make our lives easier or so we are told.

We cannot let Apple get away with this. Basically IOS 10 has damaged batteries.

    Please refer to this discussion:

    https://discussions.apple.com/message/31078892?start=0&tstart=0

Do not pay for a battery replacement, fit a battery or replace your phone until they have resolved the issue.

Ask for a refund if you already have.

It is affecting every handset from 5 to the new 7.

DON’T UPDATE TO IOS 10 OR IOS 10.1 OR IOS 10.1.1 OR ANYTHING WITH A 10 IN IT !!!!
Here is what I found out regarding my problems of all three of my families iphone 5 being bricked once we updated to IOS 10 OR IOS 10.1 and then IOS 10.1.1
After hours of trying the do a clean restore of one of my BRICKED (BRICKED- which mean iphone rendered useless) by myself, I finally concluded I need help from an Apple genius.
So I visited my local Apple store and I do believe my Apple genius genuinely tried his best to fix my iphone 5 that was BRICKED when I installed IOS10.1.1. During my visit with my Apple genius he did ask me if I had any work done to my iphone 5 and I told him “yes”. I had brought it somewhere to repair a broken screen and to replace the old battery. “Aha” says the Apple genius… “it is possible that once you tried to update to IOS 10.1.1 that our new operating system detected that there was a third party part that might or might not have been functioning correctly and so that may be why IOS 10.1.1 BRICKED your phone.”
I said to the Apple genius, “what do you mean a third party part not functioning correctly? My iphone 5 worked perfected after I had a repair shop replace the screen and battery and it only starting have issues once IOS 10 was installed.”
I am not an iphone expert but I am also no dummy.
Is it any coincidence that at the same time when Apple was hit $14.5 billion EU lawsuit that Apple decided to then also release and iphone operating system update that in essence appears to BRICK (aka seek and destroy) a large portion of iphones that are not the newest model? Apple Europe $14.5 billion EU lawsuit fine and release of OIS 10 both started in Sept 2016 when all of a sudden lots of iphone user’s phones started having “the red battery” depleting problem.
You put one and one together and can decide for yourself if OIS 10 problems are really a flaw or is it actually doing what Apple share holders want, namely to force loyal iphone users to suddenly fork over close to $14.5 billion EU of new iphone purchases sales and revenue?
I won’t be surprised if this post get’s deleted by Apple but the truth will eventually come out somewhere else. (UPDATE: Apple Communities did delete this post which is why I am posting it here. LOL)
So we will see if Apple actually does come out with an IOS update perhaps IOS 11 that undoes the BRICKED (aka: seek and destroy command) that seems to currently exist. Will Apple give back all the revenue in new iphone sales that occur while IOS 10 does it’s damage. Only time will tell.
PS: I did bring my iphone back to the “I FIX” place that repaired my broken iphone 5 screen and regardless of what the Apple store genius told me he did not think the new IOS 10.1.1 really had something that would BRICK every iphone that had been repaired with third party parts “because almost everyone’s iphones would all of a sudden not work” he said. Looking at the numerous reports online of iphones suddenly not working after installing the IOS 10, you can decide for yourself.
