iOS 5

There had been speculation prior to WWDC that Apple might exclude the iPhone 3GS from the benefits of the iOS 5 update. As we now know, iOS 5 will indeed be coming to the 3GS when it arrives sometime this fall. However, as it did with the release of iOS 4 last year, Apple has confirmed that some devices might not get all of the features that iOS 5 brings to the table.

iOS 5 will be available as a free software update for iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPad 2, iPad, iPod touch (fourth generation) and iPod touch (third generation) this fall. Some features may not be available on all products.

The company hasn’t confirmed which device or devices those are but the iPhone 3GS is a pretty strong bet. It also hasn’t stated what features will be missing on these mystery products but lucky for us, the iOS 5 beta is in full swing and has provided some answers.

So here is the stuff that works. Twitter integration is a go. The new Notifications are going to be working. The new Newsstand feature and the store will be included. Grid lines and some of the extra settings in the Camera app are there. Reading List within Safari is also going to be available on the iPhone 3GS.

Now, the stuff that’s not there. So far, the big things that are missing are the image editing features including red eye removal, cropping and magic wand as well as the Reader feature.  That’s all that’s missing thus far and but we still have a few months to go before it’s released which means both lists are subject to change.

As for performance on the iPhone 3GS, the author of this video exclaims that it works “flawlessly.” So, we’ve come from not happening at all to a flawless experience that is only missing a couple of features. Not bad, eh 3GS owners?

If you want to get down on the iOS 5 beta, there are ways to do so right now.

    The older iphone owners sure
deserve the new updates and the ios 5 not being too demanding with respect to
the technical aspects of the iphones is appreciable. After all, Apple with its
latest launches should have their previous gen smartphone users in mind! This
makes them retain their loyal fans.

It appears that getting AT&T to recognize the hacked install is a problem, so user beware

The update of the iPhone 3Gs if awful. Updates should never break things
that work. After updating my iPhone, WiFi and Bluetooth sensitivity are
down. I cannot connect to the WiFi in my house at 12 ft. Bluetooth
loses connectivity at just over 2 ft ( from my ear to my pocket), come
on now, all this worked well before the update. App’s are very jumpy,
not nearly as smooth as before.

If this is Apple’s way of forcing an update, I may not be an Apple customer anymore.
