iOS 6.1 Features Bugs Worthy of Warnings and Corporate Bans

Published

on

The biggest iOS 6.1 features aren’t new Siri activities, but bugs that are creating headaches at companies and causing one carrier to issue advice against upgrading to iOS 6.1

We’ve previously shared complaints of bad iOS 6.1 battery life and connectivity issues, and now it looks like the issues are gaining further documentation and new iOS 6.1 issues are coming to light.

AllThingsD reports that Vodafone, a British carrier, sent a text message to iPhone 4S users warning against upgrading to iOS 6.1, citing issues that impact 3G performance, posting the following message online.

Some customers may occasionally experience difficulty in connecting to the network to make or receive calls or texts or to connect to the Internet. Apple is working on a solution to their software issue. These connection problems are intermittent.

While Apple’s investigations continue, we would recommend that anyone who has not yet installed iOS 6.1 on their iPhone 4s should delay doing so until Apple has confirmed that their problem has been fixed.

The connectivity issues in iOS 6.1 may not be limited to Vodafone or the iPhone 4S. We’ve heard from an iPhone 5 user in the U.S. who is having difficulty connecting to AT&T after upgrading.

Our iPhone 5 iOS 6.1 review and iPad iOS 6.1 review found few issues. The iOS 6.1 connectivity issues do not appear to affect all users in the same manner.

iOS 6.1 Features

iOS 6.1 is causing issues for some users.

In addition to the connectivity issues, it appears that latest version of iOS is not playing nice with Exchange servers. The problems have led to companies, including AOL, to block or limit the access of iOS 6.1 devices on company servers. ZDNet reports that one fix for businesses is to prevent access to the Exchange server or to offer read only access, but ultimately corporate users are advised to hold off on the iOS 6.1 upgrade.

iOS 6.1.1 is in beta testing with developers, but there is no indication that this first beta contains fixes for the connectivity, bad battery life or Exchange server issues. It is possible that Apple will roll these fixes into the next iOS 6.1.1 beta. Apple does not always list all fixes in beta release notes.

Users wary of the upgrade can hold off on upgrading until Apple releases iOS 6.1.1, unless they plan to use the evasi0n iOS 6.1 jailbreak tool. Even though it looks like evasi0n exploits are not patched on iOS 6.1.1, it is a good idea to get to iOS 6.1 and jailbreak before Apple moves on to the next version of iOS 6.1.

There are only a few new iOS 6.1 features, the most noticeable is the ability to use Siri to order movie tickets with Fandango.

I updated to 6.1 iOS on my iPhone 5, everything seemed fine, but I’ve had serious issues with the touch screen sensitivity. For example: while texting it will enter letters twice, put in a period after a word which I didn’t want, will capitalize words unnecessarily, also on apps such as scramble w/ friends where you drag your finger across the screen, it doesn’t recognize the input and drops the word after the first letter…

Anyone have this problem? I’ve tried restarting the phone a few times and it seems to be a little better. Might just try restoring when I get home. Any suggestions would be great.

I’ve had no issues at all. Well, except for one. AppStore takes longer to load. Apart from that. Smooth sailing.

Learnt to live with the short battery life long ago.
