iOS 7.0.3 Update Problems Pour In

Published

on

Earlier this week, Apple pushed out a brand new update to its iOS 7 operating system in the form of iOS 7.0.3. The update was aimed at tackling a number of issues with iOS 7 including the iMessage problems that clouded the iOS 7 experience for many iPhone owners. Yesterday, we reported on several of the issues that remain in iOS 7.0.3 but it appears that there are plenty of other issues affecting owners using iOS 7.0.3.

In September, Apple rolled out iOS 7, the update that it announced at WWDC, and an update that promised to bring a number of big time changes to iPhone and iPad owners including a new user interface to go along with brand new features including AirDrop and Control Center. The update, Apple promised, would be the biggest change to iOS since the introduction of the original iPhone.

While that is up for debate, there is no denying that there are some big changes on board iOS 7.0.3. And while most of the changes are good, we’ve also seen the other side of things in the past few weeks.

How-to-Install-iOS-7-iPhone-and-iPad-575x342

iOS 7 rolled out in mid-September and almost immediately, iPhone and iPad owners ran into a serious security flaw that allowed nefarious users to bypass the passcode lock and access sensitive files. Apple got to work on an update for that issue and rolled out iOS 7.0.2 to iPhone, iPad and iPod touch owners. Then, two more major bugs were discovered including an iMessage issue that prevented many iPhone owners from sending or receiving iMessages. Apple promised a fix for the issues by the end of October and earlier this week, it delivered a new update in iOS 7.0.3.

The iOS 7.0.3 changelog, which can be seen in the photo below, promised a ton of bug fixes for lingering issues inside iOS 7.0.3. And while we’ve been hearing good things about the update, we ourselves had great experiences on the iPhone 5 and iPad 3, we’ve begun to hear a host of complaints about new issues brought with iOS 7.0.3 in addition to the problems that iOS 7.0.3 didn’t fix.

iOS-7.0.3-Update-Released

Yesterday, in an effort to raise awareness about those problems and potentially help people find a temporary fix, we reported on various iOS 7.0.3 issues that we had seen iPhone and iPad owners complaining about. The issues, which range from IMAP problems to glitches in the multitasking to screen flickering issues were numerous. In the past 24 hours though, we’ve heard about several more issues that are apparently impacting iDevice owners who have upgraded to iOS 7.0.3.

Almost immediately, we were told by several iPhone and iPad owners that iOS 7.0.3 broke their Wi-Fi connection. We’ve been hearing about these Wi-Fi issues since the arrival of iOS 6 and they seem to be more widespread than many people believe. In addition to that issue, we’re hearing about two other major issues in particular.

iPhone 5s owners have been dealing with a random reboot issue. And while some users are reporting that the issue has dissipated, we can confirm that it still exists on at least one iPhone 5s in the United States. Our T-Mobile iPhone 5s is still seeing reboots with our own Travis Pope claiming to see the issue after the device has been connected to Bluetooth. We have been unable to replicate the issue on other iPhone 5s’ running iOS 7.

We also heard from one iPhone owner who claims that iMessage and FaceTime no longer work. He also claims that the problem has escalated into a much larger one after installing iOS 7.0.3, telling Gotta Be Mobile that:

I have now received a bunch of messages from people I don’t even know as when you try to activate iMessage although it isn’t working somehow you receive the odd random message (in my case from random nations I don’t recognise the calling code for). This is actually a huge privacy issue delivering messages to the wrong destination.

We haven’t heard about this happening to others, but we have heard that iMessage remains broken for some iPhone owners. His pleas to Apple haven’t gone ignored but support has simply told him to try and shut off his phone and retry. That, unfortunately, hasn’t solved the issue. Others are saying that instead of fixing iMessage, iOS 7.0.3 brought the problems along with it.

Gotta Be Mobile is also hearing about touch issues on the iPhone wherein taps are no longer responsive on screen and we’re even hearing that some updates put the device into recovery mode without explanation.

iphone-5s-review 1

So far, Apple hasn’t confirmed any more iOS 7 bug fix updates beyond iOS 7.0.3 but we imagine that the company is still hard at work looking into the bugs that users are complaining about. Rumors suggested that Apple was hard at work on an iOS 7.1 update and it could be that iOS 7.1 is the update that iPhone and iPad users have been waiting for.

It’s also possible that iOS 7.1 itself could bring more issues to the table, just like iOS 7.0.3 seems to have done.

        Wow Iphone4ever

The problems I am having with my iPhone and IPad are serious. After paying so much for the product I expect it to work right all the time. I live in South Korea and my iPhone is my only means of communication when I am away from my house and when I am on the road with my small children and my phone decide to go Waco and cut me off from the rest of my English speaking world it pisses me off because I payed a lot of money for the phone for the simply reason that the product is suppose to be great. So I think you should be a little more sympathetic because you don’t know the stress this new iOS 7 and all it’s updates has caused people. For every I person who complains there are maybe 100 who have the same problem and do not complain in a forum like this.

I’m totally with you and I wonder if Apple will have the courage to admit their biggest mistake in years, so that we do not have to wait until iOS 7.9.99 to have our functional and most desirable devices again.

  3. Unbelievable

    10/24/2013 at 1:33 pm

Hmmmm, sounds like there are a few rejects jumping on the wrong band wagon. Even Android and Windows faced the same experiances with their various O/S systems for smart phones.

Claiming to be an Aple Store worker on an open forum is a pathetic way of trying to complain about things. Since every user can restore to factory shipped settings, and have to agree to use the FREE upgrade for your device, there is no class action suit to start….You do score a perfect 10 / 10 for foolish ideas. I believe that they even released the newest Mac O/S for free…how much is Windows 8.1 again?

As for the claim on return rate, most often you find that the exchange rate is not from defects, but from negligent behaviours of the owners. Cracked screen, crap poured on the phone, used in the shower, dropped in a toilet, dropping it on a hard surface, keeping it in your back pocket and sitting on your phone. These are the normal everyday abuses this phone sees, and it is a good thing Apple will exchange your busted phone for cheap. Try that with an LG or Samsung.

Im not a die hard iOS user…I actually use a PC and a Mac (Work/play and video/photo editing) have a few tablets, only one being a iPad mini, 3 phones (Blackberry for work, iPhone for home, and android for the Friday night “Excursion” phone that can be wiped remotely if it should ever fall into the wrong hands) all have their merits, none are perfect, you just need to know your application and use….oh, and always wait 6months after a product is released before you rush out and buy one. So complain, but don’t do it one sided, show the pros and cons, speak the truth, and wait for iPhone 6.

For your info idiot just because I work at a apple store I can’t post here?? Let me tell you I hate it there at apple since last year that’s why I’m taking a job offer from verizon!! You go work there apple demands a lot out of you and angry customers I don’t blame them!! It’s apple they are for there own profits I see this and see how they treat customers that’s why I’m leaving apple I’m for the buyer if they needed a phone swapped out I would do it no questions asked!! I wasn’t by the book like most and treat the buyer like liars! To me the customer is number 1 !!!! So get your facts right!! If I were to see you and iPhone was bad I would swap it for ya!! I got a lot of heat for that but that’s me and I believe in the customer but not all are right just 99% apple has a dark cloud that haunts them!! And I hope it is well missed and loved Steve jobs!! Hinting Tim cook to get his shit to right!!

You don’t “see how they treat customers”, you see how YOU and your colleagues treat the customers. After reading your paragraph I highly doubt Verizon would even interview you, let alone offer you a job.

Strange all these glitches haven’t made the Appleitus users frustrated. BBM is a better tool with no glitches and is secure from NSA snooping. Apple sucks and every update they issue cause new problems elsewhere. The latest is their update for today which terminates the auto rotation images on the iPad. You can only view the screen in one orientation. If your unit went to sleep in portrait then that’ll be all you can use and if it was sleeping in landscape mode that’ll be all you can use. The information for those locked into portrait on the sides of the screen are no longer viewable on appearance, you have to turn them on to view on the narrower screen. Apple get your arses in gear or you’re gonna get hurt big time soon

    • Unbelievable

      10/24/2013 at 1:46 pm

Agreed…Blackberry is tougher and better than many of the other lines of phones, and far more secure. This is why it is my work phone where it gets used and abused every day. Sadly, BB waited far to long to send out the new line of phones which are fantastic….but may suffer the same fate as Nortel, which is very sad indeed.

      • BJH

        12/22/2013 at 9:56 pm

Blackberry is no longer secure, documents that surfaced through the snowden information shows that their firmware has been recently cracked by the NSA, as well as their email system, which Blackberry boasted as the most secure on the market.

What about the changes with 7.0 that aren’t glitches per se, but just terrible design flaws with no attention paid to visual ergonomics or how form follows… yes, good old function. Spidery thin fonts – and bolding only helps in some places, but not on tabs in Safari or other places. There are a host of similar issues. Are iPad developers 20-somethings, who like Peter Pan, don’t think they will ever grow up to have less than great vision?

What about issues with the standalone keyboard since the update? It used to be if you wanted to delete a line, a title in email, etc., you could hit command delete. Now that doesn’t work on email subject lines.

One step forward and two back.

    10/24/2013 at 2:06 pm

7.0.3 got my iPad stuck on an iTune sync screen, and no matter how many times I restarted, I still get on the same screen. I had no choice but to restore my iPad back to factory setting. This means I lost everything from the day I got it to yesterday. I use my iPad for school works, writing, and sometimes entertainment, so this update has hit me hard.

Please make sure, Apple, that when there’s an update, create a restore point for before the update gets started on the users, and tell users to back up their data before they start an update. A year’s worth of time spent on this iPad just to have I worked on gone in 10 minutes just hurts.

    CEO’s courage (or cowardice)

Before WWDC in June I was curious and anticipating the new forthcoming iPad and iPhone and some moderate improvements in the next iOS.

Now I am glad and relieved that I have our iPhones 5 and 4s and our iPad 3 and Mini still running on iOS6.

iOS7 completely destroys the magic touch of Apple. It’s much worse than any Android Version. So, now there is not the slightest reason to buy any new iPhone or iPad, although there are some excellent technical improvements with iPhone 5s like the better camera or the faster CPU.
Tim Cook and Apple need to reach only one brave and absolutely unavoidable decision:
Dispose and forget iOS7, bring back iOS6 or launch a better designed iOS8 which cannot deny the similarity to iOS6.

Only this would bring back the magic and the Apple touch and feel which we all love.

    Think about it, Tim.

When I updated to 7.0.3 on my iPad I lost connectivity to WiFi. I asked Apple for a solution and they told me to reboot my router and then reset the Network settings on the iPad. It worked.

    • Iain

      11/03/2013 at 2:59 pm

      Maybe.
The point is that it does not work for everybody.
My iPad connects to wifi but refuses to connect to Apple sites at all… And is slow with other sites.
Issue happens with three different routers on two separate sites using different service providers. This is an Apple problem.
The issue is not the fault but Apple’s refusal to acknowledge or discuss it.
I like Apple products for personal use: but why would I spend money on systems which I need for commercial use with a company which is unhelpful?

I see on all these forums the apple cult just thinks that apple dose no wrong every thing is perfict . I agree that IOS 7 was a few steps back in time . They only tell the ups not the downs . When I was running IOS 6.1.4 I had the best phone out there so much so that I bought a MacBook Pro if I would have had the IOS 7 I would have not got a Mac . I have been having nothing but problems on my I 5 prox sensor , iTunes , slow safari , battery drain . I have started as new phone 3 times to try and fix it with no luck I have just about all the features turned off and still loose battery quick . Plus the Child like design of the UI make my great phone into junk . I will not download mavericks to my Mac I see a lot of problems with it too Apple is losing what Apple was . Like I said the apple only lovers can hate on me all you want when I got over 3G tied up in apple products and they do not work right I have a right to be mad and hate on them I can not afford to go buy new equipment .
Apple is a cult the way some say there is nothing wrong but the user take off the blinders and see the light apple is going down hill IMO . Have a nice day !

Hello J G, I’m absolutely with you. For me it’s nearly the same, I bought my MacBook Pro after I got enthusiastic about Apple through iPad and iPhone running on iOS 5 and 6. Luckily, I could downgrade my iPad 3 after testing iOS7 for an hour or two on September 19th. Now our four iOS devices will remain running on iOS6 as long as possible. After testing iOS7 on the iPhone 5s in the Apple-Store, I have no doubts that there is no Apple-magic any longer. It’s really a shame.

I’ve been burned too many times when updating A
pple iOS. I wouldn’t recommend any updates. Software team needs to do more testing before releasing updates. Also warn users about features lost if they update. I made the mistake of updating my husband’s phone before he went out of town. Now his iMessage and Siri don’t work properly. Plus all his notifications are messed up. Apple needs fix tess problems, a new release should create more problems.

I am also experience problem with some wireless routers, I haven’t done a systematic tests in all the router at work, but I can say there is a good percentage of brands that iphone with 7.0.3 can’t connect, I won’t surprised if there will be a class lawsuit against Apple Inc in the future for the cost of extra data plan usage during this period.

Same issues here since updating to 7.0.3. iMessage & FaceTime aren’t working, “waiting for activation” & just never activates. Tried EVERYTHING. The Apple Tech’s haven’t a clue what to do at this point. I’m stuck until they come up with a fix & roll out yet another update.

    10/28/2013 at 3:39 pm

The flickering has been on my iPhone 4 since 7.0.2, especially with CPU-intensive applications such as Waze.

Another issue I’ve had since 7 came out is that when I slide to unlock, sometimes the slide only goes about 3/4 of the way; I have to slide again to get it all of the way across. Also, 90% of the time the phone does not recognize an upwards slide to bring up the quick settings, yet Spotlight seems to come up on any swipe that has a hint of a downward aspect, usually accidental.

On a more troubling side, the problem that has plagued my iPad 2 since last April where “other” RAM usage (512MB, not the 32GB “disk”) ranges from 65-85% and causes applications to jettison due to memory issues regularly is now on my iPhone. I have Googled the Internet to death and I cannot find any documentation that talks about what this “other” memory is used for. I’d hook it up to XCode Instruments to see what’s there. but I don’t want to cough up the $99 right now to get access.

After updating to 7.0.3 my iPhone 4S suddenly lost all ability to connect to wifi, among other glitches. Thankfully it was still under warranty, and I am absolutely not updating my replacement 4S to 7.0.3! I do like the look and function of iOS 7, but I had to lose a day of work while waiting for my replacement phone to show up via Fed-Ex. What a waste.

iOS7.03 is a step backward in my opinion. I like the iOS7 style (however it does seem to take on the looks of android operating systems, which is one thing that apple previously had over androids). Aside from the point, the latest update causes 9.23GB of space to be taken up by the ‘other’ category. I do not know what ‘other’ consists of but my best guess is it’s the space utilised by the operating system. I previously had music stored up to capacity on my iphone 4s 16GB (approximately 13GB worth of music) and now I can only fit 3.71GB. I looked in the usage tab of system preferences and it does not identify what is using up that excess 9.23GB. All it says is “13.3GB used” and “0MB available”. How do I fix this?

Apple’s orientation towards the Android-look-and-feel is something which I will never understand. Apple was successful because iOS was special and miles away from Android. Now – with iOS 7 – it’s the same idiotic mess.

Since downloading yet another update my battery is life is worse than before. In about a 45 minute span my battery went from 100% (charged overnight) to 71%. I even took screen shots just to track. When I first got on the phone I opened up FB and within in 5 minutes I was down to 94%. I made sure to completely close out the app. Sent a few text messages, logged into my work email sent a few more messages, completely closed out everything and down to 71%. My phone has been plugged in for the last 2 hours and hasn’t gotten above 75% charged. This is totally crazy!! Is anyone else having these issues?

Seeing as your writing skills are that of an eight year old, you should be happy you have a job at that Apple store. Your lack of basic skills should have you digging ditches or hiring yourself out as day labor. Instead of being thankful, you go online and slam them? Classy. Grow up and quit biting the hand that feeds you.

After the .3 update my iPad’s sound controls no longer work . Only when you hook up the headphones. All the settings appear to be on with all the volumes up to the highest level but no sound is herd. I purchased my iPad 3 when it first came out, it was very expensive. Can someone help me out?

IOS 7 is UGLY, its designed for kids. As jobs liked to say, always form over function and simplify and clean everything and I agree. I much preferred Apples far sleeker glass 3d look of all previous IOS versions. Jobs would be freaking out right now for sure!

Ivey should stick to the hardware.

I am having iphone 4s. I have upgraded it IOS 7.0.3 after that I started facing issue with wifi access. My phone always drop connection to the wifi. While trying to connect, always I got error message as “Unable to connect to wifi”. Is there any way I can go back to ios 7.0.2 or any fix to this issue? If I keep on trying, after 20-25 attempts, it will get connected to wifi but again will drop it and same issue reoccurs.

Help is highly appreciated as I used to work from phone and it’s stopped as it is not getting connected to wifi.

This is unacceptable with the kind of issues surfacing in 7.0.3 . I can now see the screens in ONLY one orientation – Potrait. Yes, battery is sucking out faster too !!! Apple should be releases the patch fixes soon !!!!

My issue with the IOS7 update is my sound. I can barely hear my phone. I have tried going through all the settings and it still is not very loud. Does anyone know if there is a quick fix for this?

What if I liked the calendar under the previous version? Why can’t Apple give us the option to select either versions of the monthly calendar? Does anyone know how to get the older version – pre 7.2?

While the iOS 7.0.3 has fixed the issues on my phone that I was having with 7.0.2, it has created new ones in that it is competely draining my battery, I used to be able to charge it once per day (depending on usage) and not have to plug it in until later that night; now I have to plug it back in every 2 hours because the battery is drained. I’m also having issues with deleting emails, I’ll have to select each one at least 2 or 3 times and click the trash button because it’s unchecking them as fast as I can get them checked for trash.

Has anyone come up with a solution to the battery draining or do I just need to wait for the next update to roll out, as I was told by the Verizon store?

The IOS updates have a history of creating problems with iPhones. I am not an Apple hater in fact I have purchased 3 MacBooks, 1 iMac, 1 iPad, 3 iPad 2’s and an iPad 3 in addition to the 10 iPhones. Currently I have (or had) 5 iPhones in service. Of the 5, 2 stopped working when updated and 2 seem to continue to work, the 5th which is my personal iPhone 4S has not been updated with the last few IOS. I am too scared to try to update my iPhone.
The 2 iPhones that no long will work are out of warranty so I cannot talk to Apple support about them without paying $20. I took them to the Apple Retail store 3 times now for repair/replacement and they have reset them 3 times and told me they are out of warranty so no replacements. It’s too bad I am still under contract for all 5 phones, it’s going to cost me a lot to cancel these 2 phone contracts early or buy replacement phones with no contract. In the past when our iPhones stopped working when updating IOS we got new phones from Apple even after the warranty. Now that they are ignoring the fact that we have their phones being damaged by the IOS updates and being stuck with the cost to cancel service or replace phones I think I am going to try out some of the other phones and electronic products from other sources. It’s too bad for Apple they had me buying everything they made but I think those days are over for me and probably lots of other people getting burned by Apples updates.

Aside from all the immature comments. Thank you to most of you who have cemented my “no update’ decision! I didn’t like the look of iOS7, and now I refuse to update with all of these issues. 6 was perfect, I never have any issues. I love my 4s and will not upgrade until forced to. The only setback, my iPhone now moves slower… #updatesblow
