iOS 7.1.2 Arrives as First Update Since iOS 8 Reveal

Published

on

Apple has pushed out iOS 7.1.2 to the public, and it comes with several improvements and fixes, most notably fixing a big security flaw with email attachments in the Mail app. The update also improves iBeacon connectivity and stability, as well as improved connectivity with third-party accessories.

We knew the update would arrive any second now, and indeed it has. It’s certainly not a big update by any means, and we weren’t expecting it to be, as it only rings in at around 30 megabytes, so the update process should take only a couple of minutes for most users.

The update can be downloaded and installed over-the-air with your iPhone or iPad by going into Settings > General > Software Update, or you can connect your iOS device to your computer and open up iTunes to download and install the update from there.

iOS 7.1.2 update arrives

It was rumored in the past that iOS 7.1.2 would fix a big security flaw with email attachments in the default Mail app, and it has finally arrived. However, other rumored fixes didn’t make the cut this time around. Most notably, we thought we might have seen a fix for iMessage that prevented users from receiving text messages when they switch from iPhone to a non-iOS device. This caused a lot of controversy recently, but it seems that Apple isn’t addressing this in iOS 7.1.2 from what we’re seeing.

The iMessage problem has been a big issue for many users switching from iPhone to an Android device, and they’ve discovered that their phone number was still activated with iMessage. Apple employees have been giving users some pretty awful advice on how to fix the problem, none of which actually fix the problem. We detail the best way on how to fix this issue, but we’ve been told that it still doesn’t work for some users.

The issue lies within iMessage and how your phone number is registered with iMessage when you get an iPhone. When you turn iMessage on for the first time, iMessage registers your cellular telephone number with Apple, so if you ever switch to a non-Apple smartphone, you have to deregister your phone number before you can use it elsewhere.

It sounds simple and straightforward, but many users don’t realize you have to do this, and they end up having these issues when they switch to Android. Hopefully Apple will fix this sooner rather than later.

In any case, iOS 7.1.2 could likely be the last iOS 7 update that we see, as iOS 8 is currently in the testing stages and will publicly release at some point this fall — most likely in September when the iPhone 6 is expected to launch.

Then again, we wouldn’t be surprised to see another minor update later in the summer dubbed as iOS 7.1.3, but don’t expect it to contain any major fixes if it indeed does release at some point.

As for the status of an iOS 7.1.2 jailbreak, it’s already been confirmed that the current iOS 7.1.1 jailbreak works with Apple’s latest iOS update and just in case you doubted that, jailbreak developer and hacker iH8snow tweeted that the Pangu jailbreak does work with iOS 7.1.2.

There’s no word just yet on whether the Pangu team is releasing a slightly updated version of its jailbreak tool so that it officially works with iOS 7.1.2, but those who’ve jailbroken iOS 7.1.2 already say that there apparently is a new Pangu update coming, which will include official support for iOS 7.1.2. The Pangu website still lists version 1.1.0 as the latest, so be patient while the site gets updated. In any case, there’s no reason to get too excited about updating if you’re already jailbroken in iOS 7.1.1, especially since you have to wipe and re-jailbreak all over again.

just fixed my iPhone. If you haven’t, try this….
Press & hold the home button at same times as you press and hold the power button. The Apple icon should show up. When it does release and stand by. Your home screen should appear

Updated my I4S to 7.1.2 and even restored it recently but it crashes up to 16 times a day. Apple stores are useless. I am completely cured of Apple products now.
My IPAD even crashed so bad I had to restore it as well, but in that case I lost so much stuff because it wasn’t backed up I really felt it. This almost useless I4S now is crashing all the time, ANYTIME. Apple staff in the stores are only sales people with little experience or even power to do much I find. I’m switching to Android (Samsung S5)next week and only wish I had never spent to much on apps. None of these units has ever been abused or jail broken. Apple can go you know where! No more!
