iOS 8.1.1: 5 Things iPhone 6 Users Need to Know

Published

on

After a short stint in its beta program, Apple released the iOS 8.1.1 update for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. With iOS 8.1.1 problems swirling and the update not getting any younger, we want to take a look at the five most important things 4.7-inch iPhone 6 users need to know, right now, about their latest iOS 8 update, iOS 8.1.1.

In June, Apple debuted its replacement for last year’s iOS 7 update. Two months ago, Apple rolled out its brand new update for iPhone and iPad, an operating system that it dubbed iOS 8.0. iOS 8 doesn’t deliver the massive overhaul that arrived with last year’s iOS 7 update but it still brings some important new features to the table including improved notifications, Apple Pay, changes to iMessage and the Camera app, and a new keyboard.

Like any software update, the iOS 8 update delivered bugs and problems to owners of the iPhone and iPad. Over the past two months, Apple’s worked to iron out those kinks with a series of incremental upgrades. First, the company pushed out iOS 8.0.1. Next, it was iOS 8.0.2, an update that delivered fixes for iOS 8.0.1 bugs. After that, Apple rolled out iOS 8.1, a much larger update that spent time in its beta program. Last week, after another beta period, Apple pushed out iOS 8.1.1.

Apple’s latest iOS 8 update, like the updates before it, delivers bug fixes for iOS 8 problems. It also comes with self-proclaimed performance enhancements for the iPhone 4s and the iPad 2. While there are benefits, the iOS 8.1.1 update also delivered a number of problems for iPhone users, problems that have many users on edge and looking to go back down to iOS 8.1.

iPhone 6 users continue to bombard us with questions about the iOS 8.1.1 update and today, with those users in mind, we want to take a look at the most important things that iPhone 6 users need to know about their iOS 8.1.1 update, an update that is small in size but could have a big impact on Apple’s current flagship.

iOS 8.1.1 Review

The first thing that you iPhone 6 users need to know is that we recently posted our full review of the iOS 8.1.1 update for the iPhone 6. This review is going to give you a ton of feedback about performance, key to any incremental iOS update, and we think it’s worth checking out before you install the software on your iPhone 6. It’s also worth checking out if you are already on iOS 8.1.1.

Our goal is obviously to ensure that you’re as educated as possible before you make a decision about making the move up to iOS 8.1.1 from whatever it is that you’re currently on. We highly recommend doing a ton of research, that means reading several reviews (if you can find them), before coming to your decision. Remember, you don’t need to install iOS 8.1.1 if you don’t want to. There’s no rush.

Yes, There Are iOS 8.1.1 Problems

You need to know that there are iOS 8.1.1 problems. We’re seeing all sorts of complaints from iPhone 6 users in the aftermath of the iOS 8.1.1 update. Users are reporting issues with the battery, issues with Bluetooth, problems with Wi-Fi connectivity, bugs in Safari, network signal problems, reboots and screen rotation issues, Touch ID problems, and more.

We bring these up because we think that it’s essential that you know there is some risk involved in making this upgrade. iOS 8.1.1 does fix some problems but it also has the chance to deliver some new ones to your iPhone 6 as well. It’s not a guarantee though. If you’re prepared and you do your homework, you’re less likely to run into issues post update.

Before installing iOS 8.1.1, make sure you read up on the potential problems and examine potential fixes for those problems just in case you run into them on your iPhone 6. Most of these issues are isolated which means that they aren’t affecting a widespread number of iPhone 6 users. That said, you just never know what’s going to be lurking on board a software update.

Fixes for iPhone 6 iOS 8.1.1 Problems

We have a master list of iOS 8.1.1 problems. And that master list comes with several potential fixes for the most common iOS 8.1.1 issues that we’ve found. That includes Bluetooth, that includes Wi-Fi, and that includes battery life. It’s worth reading up on those fixes if you already have iOS 8.1.1 on board or if you simply aren’t familiar with the potential repercussions of installing iOS 8.1.1.

These fixes are basic and have been around forever. Commit them to memory and you’ll be better prepared for iOS 8.1.1 or whatever update Apple rolls out next. Even the smallest of iOS updates can have a negative impact on device performance.

It Fixes One Major iOS 8 Bug

If you’re experiencing an issue where the iPhone 6 gets stuck in landscape mode, you’ll be happy to know that the iOS 8.1.1 update seems to have fixed the problem for many users including us. One of our devices used to get stuck in landscape mode multiple times a day. Even on iOS 8.1. In the past week or so, we have yet to encounter the problem.

We’ve seen the problem occur once or twice on another model but that’s far down from the five, six, seven times it used to happen a day. So, if you’re dealing with that issue, you’re really going to want to look into the iOS 8.1.1 update for the iPhone 6. The change log might not list a fix for the issue but iOS update’s have a funny way of fixing problems not listed in the change log.

You Can Go Back to iOS 8.1 Right Now

Finally, iPhone 6 users need to know that you can go back to iOS 8.1 right now if you so choose. The option probably won’t be available forever but if you act fast and follow our guide, you’ll be able to move back to Apple’s aging iOS 8.1 update. There’s really only two reasons to do that.

The first reason you might want to move back to iOS 8.1 is if you’re experiencing tons of problems with iOS 8.1.1. If you were having a good experience with iOS 8.1 on board and you blindly installed iOS 8.1.1 and are now having problems, try moving back. It might help you sort out your issues.

The other reason is if you’re looking to jailbreak the iPhone 6. The Pangu iOS 8 jailbreak supports iOS 8.1 but it doesn’t support iOS 8.1.1. At least not yet. So, you need to be iOS 8.1 if you want to take full advantage of Cydia and a jailbreak.

Obviously, if you’re getting solid performance out of iOS 8.1.1 there’s no reason to turn back the clock and go to iOS 8.1. Simply stay on iOS 8.1.1. If you encounter problems down the road though, you’ll need to rely on temporary fixes.
