iOS 8.1.3 Issues: What You Need to Know Now

Published

on

Several weeks ago, Apple released and iOS 8.1.3 update for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. The update emerged with several bug fixes for iOS 8 problems though, as we and other iPhone and iPad users have learned, it failed to fix them all. Today, we want to take an updated look at iOS 8.1.3 problems on iPhone, iPad and iPod touch.

Three weeks ago, Apple released its six iOS 8 bug fix updated in the form of iOS 8.1.3. The update was, and still is, much larger than some of Apple’s previous iOS 8 bug fix releases and it delivers solutions for several iOS 8 problems including broken multitasking gestures on the iPad and a fix for the amount of storage needed to install Apple’s iOS updates over the year.

Over the past three weeks, iPhone, iPad and iPod touch users around the world have installed Apple’s new software. And while some of have had good experiences, others are dealing with iOS 8.1.3 problems or lingering iOS 8 problems. We reported on some of the initial issues affecting iPhone and iPad users and today we want to take another look at the current situation.

Here’s what we think you need to know now about iOS 8.1.3 problems on iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. This runs down some of the more common iOS 8.1.3 problems, some of the problems we’re facing, and what the future is looking like for those experiencing issues with Apple’s latest iOS 8 software.

iOS 8.1.3 Problems Continue

We’re now three weeks removed from Apple’s iOS 8.1.3 release and we continue to hear, and see, complaints about iOS 8.1.2 problems. Most of these problems are isolated though we are starting to see some problems grow in number.

Apple’s discussion forum is still full of complaints about iOS 8.1.3 issues. For instance, iPhone 5 users are complaining about touch screen issues and performance problems. iPhone 6 Plus users are reporting Bluetooth problems. iPad users and iPhone users alike are running into problems with Wi-Fi connectivity. And iPhone 6 users are noticing battery drain.

We’re also seeing Touch ID problems mount for iPhone and iPad users in the days after the iOS 8.1.3 release. Users are also complaining about issues with Apple’s AirPlay feature after installing iOS 8.1.3. These just scratch the surface. There are a number of other complaints on Apple’s forum and it’s clear that iOS 8.1.3 is still frustrating some iPhone and iPad users.

We’re Also Now Seeing iOS 8.1.3 Issues

We’ve also begun to notice some oddities with iOS 8.1.3, particularly on the iPhone 6. While our initial impressions out of the gate were good, we’ve started running into two annoying bugs on Apple’s 4.7-inch iPhone 6.

The first, the pesky landscape issues that first arrived with iOS 8.0. After every iOS 8 bug fix, the issues seemed to go away, only to return again weeks later. History’s repeated itself here with iOS 8.1.3. While performance was great after the arrival of iOS 8.1.3 three weeks ago, we’re starting to see near frequent landscape problems where the iPhone 6 gets stuck when shifting back to portrait. It’s an annoying issue and one that we hope Apple tackles in a future update.

The other issue is a Wi-Fi problem. iOS 8’s Wi-Fi issues are well documented and we’ve begun to experience an extremely annoying, and seeming unfixable problem on the iPhone 6.

While devices like the iPhone 5, iPad Air and others are performing well, the iPhone 6 cannot hold a Wi-Fi connection. Often, we’ll look down and the device is mysteriously using LTE, even with Wi-Fi flipped on and the routers running perfectly. We’ve tried everything but for whatever reason, the Wi-Fi connection will not stick.

We’re not expecting a fix for this problem, Wi-Fi issues have plagued iPhone and iPad users for years now, but our hope is that the issues work themselves out somehow in the days ahead of iOS 8.2 or in the days after its release. Larger updates sometimes have a positive effect on larger bugs such as this.

Possible Fixes for iOS 8.1.3 Problems Exist

If you are dealing with iOS 8.1.3 problems, there are a few things that you should know. First, we’ve put together a list of possible fixes for iOS 8.1.3 problems. These fixes have worked for some people, including us, but they haven’t worked for everyone.

With that in mind, treat these as a great starting point. We always recommend hunting around on different sites and different forums for fixes. Sometimes, an unorthodox fix from a random iPad or iPhone owner will work wonders.

You Can’t Go Back to iOS 8.1.2

It’s worth noting that you can no longer go back to Apple’s iOS 8.1.2 update. For a couple of weeks, Apple signed off on the iOS 8.1.2 update, something that allowed iOS 8.1.3 users to downgrade to iOS 8.1.2 in an effort to get rid of bugs and or jailbreak the device. These days, that option is off the table and it’s never coming back. That’s something to keep in mind if you’re having an excellent experience on iOS 8.1.2 or below.

iPad 2 iOS 8.1.3 Update

You can’t go back to iOS 8.1.2 but you can, it seems, go back to iOS 6 if you own an iPad 2. We’ve put together a step-by-step guide on how to downgrade from iOS 8 to iOS 6 on the iPad 2. Now why would you want to do this?

Well, according to some iPad 2 users, the iOS 6 update is performing much nicer than iOS 8. That doesn’t come as too much of a surprise given that the software is from two years ago and the iOS 8 update is the iPad 2’s fourth update. New software sometimes wrecks havoc on older devices, even powerful ones like the iPad 2.

This is a strange option but it’s available to those of you hating life on iOS 8.1.3 or below. Keep in mind, you’ll lose iOS 8’s features, and looks, if you do decide to downgrade. And should you want to return, you’ll have to move to iOS 8.1.3 or something newer.

iOS 8.2 and iOS 8.3

If you don’t want to downgrade to iOS 6 and you are struggling to find a fix for your iOS 8.1.3 problems, note that Apple has not one but two more iOS 8 updates up its sleeve for later this year. Rumors also point to the arrival of iOS 8.4 though that update hasn’t reached the beta program yet and remains a rumored update at this point.

iOS 8.2 should be first in line and iOS 8.2 release date rumors still put its release inside the month of March. Specifically, it’s rumored for the second week though we wouldn’t put too much stock into that. This is important because it means that iOS 8.1.3 users have some possible fixes on the way. It’s also important because it means that there’s no rush to install iOS 8.1.3.

Apple’s iOS 8.2 update is primarily going to be aimed at adding support for the Apple Watch though we do expect Apple to include some bug fixes and enhancements on board.

As for iOS 8.3, it currently sits in the beta program though it’s not as far along as the iOS 8.2. It’s expected to deliver wireless support for CarPlay and perhaps, some bug fixes as well. If you’re growing impatient with iOS 8.1.3 problems, iOS 8.2 is the update to keep an eye on, not iOS 8.3. Just remember, there’s a good chance that iOS 8.2 will bring some problems of its own. iOS updates always do.
