iOS 8 Problems Plague Users

Published

on

Yesterday, Apple released its iOS 8 update for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch, ushering in a new era of its mobile operating system. And while the update delivers a ton of new features, iPhone and iPad users say that it also delivered a number of iOS 8 problems as well.

On September 9th, Apple announced that it would be taking the iOS 8 update out of the beta program and that it would be delivering the update to the public on September 17th. Right on cue, Apple made the iOS 8 update available to iPhone 5s, iPhone 5c, iPhone 5, iPhone 4s, iPad Air, iPad mini with Retina Display, iPad 4, iPad 3, iPad 2, iPad mini, and iPod touch fifth-gen users.

iOS 8 is not as ambitious as last year’s iOS 7 update but it’s a large update nonetheless. Apple’s new software for iPhone and iPad comes with a number of new features including improvements to Photos, iMessaging, FaceTime Audio, calendar, accessibility, and more. The iOS 8 update delivers well over 100 new features to iPhone and iPad users.

In addition to these features, it appears that the iOS 8 update has delivered a number of issues as well. iPhone and iPad users are complaining about a number of iOS 8 issues though the start of iOS 8 problems can be traced back to yesterday and the minutes and hours after Apple first released the iOS 8 update to the public.

After the iOS 8 update, "Why is my iPhone slow?" is a common question.

After the iOS 8 update, “Why is my iPhone slow?” is a common question.

Shortly after the arrival of the iOS 8 update, iPhone and iPad users in the United States and around the world ran into an assortment of installation issues that prevented them from installing the iOS 8 update in a timely manner. Long download times, storage issues, and failed updates were among the most common iOS 8 problems that emerged in the seconds after iOS 8 first arrived.

Those problems continue to plague iPhone and iPad owners 24 hours after the iOS 8 release date though unlike many of these initial iOS 8 issues, the installation issues can be solved right now. (Those links above will take you to proper fixes.)

Those iOS 8 issues have now been joined by several others as more and more iPhone and iPad users install Apple’s brand new upgrade. Apple’s discussion forums are littered with complaints about iOS 8 and the supposed problems that the update has delivered to iPhone and iPad users of all shapes and sizes.

iPad Pro

iPad users are evidently dealing with a myriad of issues after installing iOS 8. And while we’re hearing and seeing a lot of complaints from users with older devices, these problems aren’t limited to owners of the iPad 2 or the iPad 3. iPad mini with Retina users are complaining about bad Wi-Fi. iPad mini users are saying that the experience is incredibly slow after installing iOS 8. And iPad Air users are saying that Safari is extremely slow after installing Apple’s new update. Those are just the tip of the iceberg.

iPad 2 users are complaining about an assortment of performance issues after the iOS 8 upgrade. iPad 3 users have run into similar issues and they say that the performance after installing iOS 8 has taken a hit. Apple’s forums are filled with complaints like these. iPad users are having issues with sound, problems with multitasking gestures, FaceTime issues, and more.

The iOS 8 performance is good on the iPhone 5s.

The iOS 8 performance is good on the iPhone 5s.

iPhone users are dealing with iOS 8 problems as well. And just like the iPad update, the iOS 8 update is being unkind to all kinds of iPhone users, not just those with the iPhone 4s.

iPhone 5 users are complaining about a number of problems after installing iOS 8. It appears that some iPhone 5 users are dealing with poor performance after installing the new software and we’ve spoken to one iPhone 5 user who claims that the Mail app keeps crashing and that he’s seeing random reboots after the upgrade. Random reboots were a huge problem in iOS 7 though Apple seemed to have patched up those memory leaks with iOS 7.1. Not all iPhone 5 users are dealing with issues, however.

iPhone users are also complaining about Wi-Fi issues, a number of problems with the new Family Sharing feature, more Wi-Fi issues, and we’ve heard from iPhone 4s and iPhone 5 users that claim to have abnormal battery drain after the update. Wi-Fi issues and battery life issues are the most common problems after a major iOS update.

We’re also seeing complaints about Bluetooth connectivity, messaging problems, general sluggishness, and a whole lot more. Fixes for many of these issues are hard to come by at the moment. iOS 8 is still very fresh and we’ve only had about 24 hours to digest all of these issues and problems affecting iPhone and iPad users.

Those who are dealing with issues should, for now, consult Apple’s discussion forums or another popular forum, investigate these iOS battery life tips and take a look at some of these fixes for common iOS problems after an update. If none of these fixes work, it might be worth backing up the iPhone or iPad and performing a fresh install.

Apple doesn’t announce incremental bug fix updates ahead of time though the company will almost certainly deliver an iOS 8.0.1 update with bug fixes on board in the future. Historically, bug fix updates have rolled out just days after an update’s initial release.

This is a common problem with all new IOS updates, Apple or Other devices. The concern I have is that I have not yet downloaded IOS 8 on my Iphone 5S and yet I am having the same issues lately, in particular with wifi. I tend to think they put out issues for the phones to incentivise some people to buy new ones because their current phone must be broken. But then they put the patch out which stops the problems magically created around this time. Its all a cycle.

I gave it 13G of unused space to help it install correctly, but the IOS 8 update still went crappy. I had to reinstall all of my movies and lost some movie artwork along the way. No matter how many time I tried copying back the movies with the lost artwork, I only get a blank image. The only reason I attempted at all was that I was hoping the update would fix the distorted sound coming from the speakers on my ipad mini w/retina display. No such luck. I was also hoping they would start reading the audio metadata in movies that gives you a description of alternate audio tracks. You know like ‘Main Audio’ & ‘Director’s Commentary’. All I get is ‘English’ & ‘English’ – how am I supposed to know which is which? What really gets me steamed is that back around IOS 6, Apple devices could read this metadata from videos. Are the programmers at Apple morons or what.

I updated my 4s yesterday at 4:00 p.m. Since then I have had to charge it from drained 3 times – and I have not used it! I have everything shut off, screen at low and no e-mail push. I have made no calls, used no apps and processed no messages.

The battery has drained from full to <10% in less than 3 hours, 3 times.

    Stay away from it!

No Bluetooth audio streaming, intermittent wifi, massive battery drain. Just 3 of the basic functions of an iPhone 5S that now don’t work properly on iOS 8. Avoid it. Would help if Apple actually tested it before rollout…….

Apple like most commercial IT companies are a mess. As wild as it may seem they use very few best practices. There is no way a robust test program would not catch most of the common items being seen this close to a roll out. And with so few people actually upgrading so far.

You’d think after all of the iOS Update issues since the iPhone4 came out, that people would learn to NOT run the update until you read the reviews. I’ll stick with 7.1.1 on my 5S – no issues at all – other than the Cartoonish Icons that Apple still hasn’t addressed, and the lack of ability to “Personalize” your phone, of course.

I get Apple cannot test with all combinations of apps. But it is a closed system. So either their architecture has no real robustness especially for exception handling or their testing is a joke. If this were allowed in planes millions would die or everything would come to a halt. They get away with this because they are the best of a crappy breed. Commercial IT is deplorable.

I’ve had no problems with iOS 8 on my iPhone 5S, so far. My iPad 2 is another story – I’ve got the “no GSM” problem that seems to be wide spread among iPad 2 owners at least. Of course I also had to delete apps and data just to install.

My phone is practically unusable, well apart from when using it as just a phone. I am so annoyed! Almost every app I use crashes and returns to the start screen. If I wanted just a ‘phone’ I’d have bough a cheap £10 Nokia. There is no point in having an iPhone since the latest update. How do they get away with this. Not fit for purpose. I feel like I’m being robbed at the moment with the price plan I pay for an almost useless phone. Shocking update Apple, this should be a trading standards issue if it goes on for any length of time!

With ios 8 I can no longer use my mp3 song downloader app anymore. The app itself has been removed from the app store and every time I try to play the songs within the app, it crashes. Check the apple support forum for the truth, def before you update. Thousands of people are complaining that the new update has destroyed their wifi performance, among other less annoying bugs (which there are many as well). The wifi stack by Apple has lost its ability to retain ap passwords and continuity. While you can browse after a reset of your network stettings, it doesn’t help for bandwidth (say goodbye to Netfix or streaming HBO) and it doesn’t last long before the corruption returns.

Apple has certainly failed in their QA, and allowed management to push for a committed release date to save face, without proper testing.

My iPhone 5 is having problems. My apps won’t open my photos more than once, which is a hassle when I’m trying to edit and merge them. All I get is a black screen. My notifications at the top don’t go away unless I click them. If I try to swipe it away, my phone freezes. Some settings I click on will cause my phone to crash. My internet is incredibly slow and often doesn’t load. Some apps won’t send me notifications. Didn’t like that keyboard very much. It suggests words that aren’t even close to what I typed, doesn’t recognize many average words, and it can be a pain trying to constantly fix it. A lot of things don’t work on my data, and I have to reset my wifi often. Messages take forever to send, if they send, and ones being received can take hours or over a day to get to me. This update should’ve been tested more

The update gave me one plus. I can now see the full size photo of someone calling me. I could barely see the thumbnail on IOS 7.
Like everyone else, poor battery life and app crashing; especially my MP3 Downloader/Player. I can’t even get through a full song. With the othe apps, I can at least go back in and use it.

Apparently I’m in the smartphone stone ages with my iPhone 4s! Haha unfortunatley I can never afford to keep up with the latest equipment. As soon as I finally get a newer one, they release a newer shinier one. -_- Anyways….I upgraded to ios8 the second it became available and now I wish I hadn’t. :( I’ve had a TERRIBLE time with it so far. Random reboots, freezing, lagging something awful, short battery life. It even shuts off around 20% battery and MAKES me plug it back in otherwise it’ll just stay off and show me the “plug in” image. Up until now I have never had a single problem with this phone. So strange. I hope they get it fixed BC it’s making me hate my phone right now. Good thing I warned my husband to just wait.

My iPad 2 continues to shut off cellular service (“No Service” in the upper left corner). Version 8.0.2 did not address this issue. The outage occurs at irregular intervals, and, while service can be reactivated by shutting down and restarting the iPad, I shouldn’t have to do this.

Of course, if you call APPLE support and are out of warranty as I am, you get charged by APPLE for trying to get a solution to a problem APPLE created. I’d guess stockholders aren’t complaining about this unexpected income stream.

I’d roll back if I could (or switch to an Android tablet).

Now with ios 8 my alarm songs only play once instead of repeating. Who wakes up to a song the first time it plays??? I need it to repeat at least 5-6 times before I get annoyed enough to get out of bed. Here’s what I did for a fix until this problem is resolved: I used a program to edit a bunch of my favorite songs in to one long mp3 and set that as my alarm song, so now it plays that variety of songs for about 25 minutes instead of one song over and over.

I’m finding the latest iOS 8 update a really poor upgrade.  To make way for new features that I probably won’t use much, my battery life has been decimated by it on my iPad.  I’ve followed as many tips as I could on the subject such as enabling auto-brightness, switching off apps from running in the background, having WiFi enabled, etc, but this hasn’t helped very much to be honest.  My feeling is that Apple is trying encourage us to upgrade hardware too to be able to use their devices as they once used them, with this more draining software.  I would get about 60% battery life from my iPad now, so it becomes a lot less useful when I’m out and about, which is what the iPad is all about for me, ie not having to plug it in all the time or cart around a power cord for it.  It means that I use my iPad 40% less now unless I’m near a power point and have my power cord handy.  I’m guessing you get more battery life out of Samsung and Windows tablets.  Can someone tell me more on this if they know more please?

Never update an Apple device before reading the support forums. This is the hard lesson I learnt from updating my 4S to IOS 8. Now with no WiFi. Resets on network, accessibility and all data have no effect. Apple support can only suggest a visit to their store for repair which will cost £166 for repair of the wifi. They would not admit they have any issues with IOS 8 on the 4S and I have a faulty wifi module.
After reading several forums this is nonsense but if in fact it is can have only be caused by the 8 upgrade.
Unfortunately my attached heart monitor is designed for the 4s and the phones above this would not fit or be compatible, besides I can pickup a refurbished 4s with 12m warranty for less than £166.
The 4s is more than adequate for my needs, anything more is well catered by my iPad and mac pro.
Apple have certainly created a cash cow with this upgrade fiasco.

Never download an update until other people have done it first. Then wait for the fixes before you down load. Been doing this since my iPhone 4 and my first iPad. This has worked quite well for me. Don’t work harder work smart. Like my device and have the latest iPhone 6 Plus and mini ipad.
