Published

on

Apple continues to update the iPhone 6s Plus a month after the release to fix user complaints about Live Photos and to deliver new emojis to the iPhone 6s Plus and to other Apple devices. Join us for a look at the iOS 9.1 iPhone 6s Plus performance that will help you decide if you should install the update on the new iPhone or wait for more feedback.

Apple delivered the first update to the iPhone 6s Plus before it even arrived in our hands, and soon after the iOS 9.0.2 update arrived to fix more problems, but Live Photos still recorded too much of the camera movement and iOS 9 problems frustrated some iPhone 6s Plus users.

After 24 hours the iPhone 6s Plus iOS 9.1 update looks like a good solution to users who are experiencing issues with iOS 9.0.2 or iOS 9.0.1.

Apple released the iOS 9.1 update for the iPhone 6s Plus and for all devices that can run iOS 9 on October 21st. There are over 150 new emoji in the update, over a dozen bug fixes and important security updates.

Here is a look at the iOS 9.1 iPhone 6s Plus performance and what you need to know about issues and other key details before you upgrade you new iPhone to iOS 9.1.

iOS 9.1 Installation

iPhone 6s Plus iOS 9.1 - 3The iPhone 6s Plus iOS 9.1 installation was fast. In less than 15 minutes I was up and running with the new emojis and other features. The update is not a small one, at 313MB, so you will need a speedy WiFi connection to finish in that amount of time.

You should make sure you backup and take other steps to prepare for the iOS 9.1 update before jumping in. Make sure you know your iCloud password as you will need it when the iPhone 6s Plus restarts.

iOS 9.1 on iPhone 6s Plus Performance

We don’t expect a major change in performance on a one month old phone, even from a milestone update like iOS 9.1, but we still test several areas to see how well it handles. Small and large updates can bring unintended bugs or problems alongside fixes. Keep in mind that this is just the experience using one iPhone 6s Plus on iOS 9.1, and your experience may vary.

Live Photos on iOS 9.1

Apple includes a fix for Live Photos on the iPhone 6s Plus with iOS 9.1. This update uses sensors to detect camera movement and will clip the part of a Live Photo that would otherwise show the camera coming up or going down.

Live Photos are better, but it is not a perfect solution yet. For the time being if you want a great Live Photo you need to line up your shot then hold the camera until it is done. Better yet, get a tripod if you want to remove hand shake.

Apps

Apps work well on iOS 9.1.

After installing iOS 9.1 on the iPhone 6s Plus the first thing I do is test the most common apps that I use each day. So far my favorite iPhone 6s Plus apps all run find on iOS 9.1.

This includes Slack, Netflix, Amazon Instant Video, Facebook, Tweetbot, Alien Blue, PhotoMemories to transfer photos, Nest, Hangouts, Asana, Gmail, Audible and Spotify.

If you run into any issues, make sure you update your apps.

iOS 9.1 iPhone 6s Plus Battery Life

It is impossible to make a definitive claim about the iPhone 6s Plus iOS 9.1 battery life after a day, but so far it is very similar to iOS 9 and that is a good thing.

Common iPhone battery problems after an upgrade include fast draining issues that happen when something is wrong with the update. That is not the case, but it will take additional testing to see how the iOS 9.1 battery life shakes out with heavier use. use this guide to fix bad iPhone 6s Plus battery life.

WiFi, Cellular Data & Bluetooth

This is an AT&T iPhone 6s Plus and after upgrading to iOS 9.1 I can connect to LTE, make calls and use the personal hotspot without any problems. WiFi calling is still enabled, but coverage is good enough that I haven’t had to use it.

Bluetooth connectivity is solid, but I have yet to test it in a car with Ford Sync to see if it performs well and if it is any better than using iOS 9 with the system.

WiFi connectivity is solid all throughout my house and while connecting to WiFi at my in-law’s house.

Overall the connectivity and performance of the iOS 9.1 iPhone 6s Plus update is solid.

Bugs & Issues

In a day of using iOS 9.1 on the iPhone 6s Plus I have not encountered any show-stopping problems or issues. We occasionally see bugs appear after extended use, so there is a chance I will run into a problem, but overall this is promising. Here’s how to fix common iOS 9 problems.

Speed

The iPhone 6s Plus is fast, and it is still fast after installing iOS 9.1. There is no perceptible change to the speed of the iPhone 6s Plus from iOS 9.0.2 to iOS 9.1. 3D Touch still works great and the iPhone 6s Plus switches apps and runs apps without breaking a sweat.

The question I want to help you answer is, “Should I upgrade the iPhone 6s Plus to iOS 9.1?”

After a day of use the upgrade runs great and there are no major issues that cause me to tell users to hold off on the upgrade.

Cautious users can wait a few days to see if there are any problems hidden in this update, but after 24 hours I couldn’t find any.

Users who are on iOS 9.0.2 and who want to jailbreak should not upgrade as this breaks the jailbreak. Read additional reasons you should wait and reason you should install iOS 9.1 now.

New iOS 9.1 Emoji

There are a lot of new iOS 9.1 emoji options to use when you install the upgrade. The most talked about new emoji is the middle finger emoji, but there is also a unicorn, a taco, a burrito, a lion, spider, new sports, gambling options and a lot of new faces.

Once you upgrade you will get access to the new iOS 9.1 emoji on your iPhone and iPad. Many of these support the multiple skin tone options that Apple added to iOS 8 over the summer.

If you send the new iOS 9.1 emoji to someone who does not have iOS 9.1 installed they will see odd blocks for many of the items you send.

You can use all the new iOS 9.1 emoji on the iPhone emoji keyboard that is on by default. You don't need to buy any apps to get the new emoji.

I just want to let people know about an issue I had after this update with wifi and how I got it fixed hopefully it will save people a little trouble. I could not connect to my wifi after updating as it kept telling me my password was incorrect. However I tried reconnecting on my laptop to be sure I had the correct password and that it wasn’t my router or something and it worked just fine. I reset network settings on my phone and still had this issue. I called apple support and what we did to fix it was doing a back up and restore using my itunes here on my laptop. He said by doing updates just using wifi on my phone and not hooked up to the computer there could be connection issues that may not allow the update to work properly. So we restored my phone and then reset network setting again and I am back on wifi finally. YAY haha anyway I just thought I would share in case others having the same problem and run into this issue.
