iOS 9.1 Problems: 5 Things That Need Your Attention

Published

on

The iOS 9.1 update brings new features and bug fixes but it also brings problems to iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. If you’re already on Apple’s new software or you’re thinking about installing iOS 9.1, keep these things in mind.

Two weeks ago, Apple released a new update called iOS 9.1. The update arrived just a few short weeks after the release of Apple’s iOS 9.0, iOS 9.0.1 and iOS 9.0.2 updates.

Unlike iOS 9.0.1 and iOS 9.0.2, iOS 9.1 is a large update that delivers new features alongside bug fixes for iOS 9 problems.

iOS 9 problems have been a problem since release in September. They’ve plagued iOS 9.0 users. They’ve impacted iOS 9.0.1 performance. And they’ve also caused headaches for many iOS 9.0.2 users. Problems include security flaws, issues with apps, battery drain problems, and more.

iPhone 6s Plus iOS 9.1 - 3

iOS 9.0.1 and iOS 9.0.2 squashed some of the more glaring iOS 9 problems but they didn’t fix them all. iOS 9.1 arrived with several key bug fixes and performance enhancements including stability updates for Apple’s stock apps.

iOS 9.1 fixes some issues but it also, according to some iOS users, brings some problems of its own. With these iOS 9.1 problems in mind, we want to take a look a few things that will help if you do experience issues with Apple’s first milestone update.

We’ll also tell you about a few things to keep in mind if you haven’t installed the iOS 9.1 update on your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch.

iOS 9.1 Problems Plaguing Users

The first thing you need to know is that there are iOS 9.1 problems plaguing iPhone, iPad and iPod touch users who’ve already taken the plunge with the update and its new features.

Social media sites like Twitter and Apple’s very own discussion forums are filling up with feedback about Apple’s latest update. While some of the feedback is good, others are complaining about various issues with the iOS 9.1 update and its performance. These problems include a frustrating Touch ID issue that continues to gain steam.

iOS 9.1 Touch ID Problems

It appears that some iPhone users are experiencing problems with unreliable Touch ID. Touch ID is the fingerprint sensor embedded in the home button on several iPhone and iPad variants.

Some users are saying that Touch ID has become less responsive and others are saying that, at times, it won’t even accept a fingerprint.

Issues with Touch ID aren’t unprecedented. Apple was forced to issue an iOS 8.0.2 update to fix Touch ID problems in iOS 8.0.1.

We haven’t seen the problem on the iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus, iPhone 6, or iPhone 6 Plus. At least not yet.

Other iOS 9.1 Problems

Other iOS 9.1 problems include battery drain on the iPhone 4s, problems with Search, problems with contacts and certain apps, various forms of installation issues, problems connecting to cellular service, iPhone 6s battery drain problems, and issues with Messages.

These are just some of the early iOS 9.1 problems impacting iPhone and iPad users. We expect more issues to emerge as more people discover iOS 9.1 lurking in iTunes and Settings.

Now, it’s important to note that while there are iOS 9.1 problems, they appear to be isolated, at least for the moment. We haven’t heard about any widespread iOS 9.1 bugs or problems and we haven’t seen anything significant in our testing on iPhone and iPad. That said, know that you’re taking a risk by updating to the iOS 9.1 update.

It’s impossible to predict if you’ll run into problems and that’s precisely why we recommend preparing for the update and its changes.

Also remember that Apple won’t force you to install the iOS 9.1 update. In fact, there are actually some good reasons why you might want to avoid the iOS 9.1 update, at least for the moment. These early iOS 9.1 problems are just one of the reasons.

iOS 9.1 Feedback

If you’ve moved to iOS 9.1 already or if you’re thinking about an install, make sure you dig into feedback about the iOS 9.1 update. We’ve been taking a close look iOS 9.1 on the iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s PlusiPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, and iPhone 5. These reviews are going to be a great starting point for those of you worried about problems and those of you experiencing issues with iOS 9.1. iOS 9.1 on iPhone 6 Plus - 5 You’ll also want to branch out and take a look at feedback from other iOS 9.1 users. Mileage always varies so it’s good to absorb a wide range of feedback both before, and after, you install the iOS 9.1 update.

Monitoring this feedback will warn you of potential problems, keep you up-to-date on the latest iOS 9.1 issues, and help you fix problems if you do run into something. It’s important. It’s also important to get both sides of the story. While some people are having issues with iOS 9.1, others are reporting good things.

Fixes for iOS 9.1 Problems

If you do run into one of these iOS 9.1 problems, don’t panic. You have a ton of resources at your disposal.

One of them is Apple’s discussion forums. Users on there are generally very helpful and it’s one of the first places to look if you see something out of place after moving to iOS 9.1.

You’ll also want to take a look at our list of fixes for common iOS 9 problems. Our guide offers fixes for battery drain issues, problems with Wi-Fi and more.

iOS 9.2 Beta & Downgrading

If you can’t find a fix for your iOS 9.1 problem, note that you can no longer downgrade to the iOS 9.0.2 update.

iOS-9.1-Release-Date-Update-1

Apple’s closed off the iOS 9.0.2 downgrade loophole which means you have two options at your disposal. One, you can move to the public iOS 9.2 beta that Apple released a few days ago. Or two, jailbreak your device and move to something older.

If you jailbreak, you can drop back down to iOS 8. Most of you won’t want to do this but it’s an option if iOS 9 and iOS 9.1 are really bothering you.

iOS 9.2 & What’s Next

If you’re dealing with iOS 9.1 problems, know that Apple’s confirmed an iOS 9.2 update for the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch and that it will bring bug fixes to iOS 9 users. It’s just not clear if it’s next in line.

If the company has an iOS 9.1.1 update in store for users, it’s not saying. And there’s a good chance it won’t say anything ahead of time.

iOS 9.0.1 and iOS 9.0.2 both came out of the blue and if Apple is planning another small bug fixer, it could arrive out of the blue as well. Point is, you shouldn’t rely on Apple to fix your iOS 9.1 problems.

The iOS 9.2 release date could arrive before the end of the year but that’s not set in stone. For more on iOS 9.2 take a look at our most recent roundup.

iOS 9.2 Release Date: 5 Things to Get Excited About

iOS 9.2 Performance

iOS 9.2 Performance

It's still early but it looks like the iOS 9.2 update could improve performance in key areas on some well-known devices.

Developers testing the update have relayed feedback about the iOS 9.2 beta and its performance and so far, we've heard good things.

iPhone 4s iOS 9.2 beta testers are saying that Multitasking has improved with the iOS 9.2 update on board. iPhone 6s Plus beta testers claim that there is less 3D Touch lag with iOS 9.2 on board. And iPhone 6 Plus say that the App Switcher is far more fluid than it was in previous iOS updates.

We've also heard that Control Center lag has lessened on devices like the iPhone 5 and iPhone 5s though it's not clear if that will translate to the final version of the update.

Developers and testers claim that performance is improved over iOS 9.1. If that's true that's exciting because iOS 9.1 has been excellent on many of our devices.

It's still early in the process but it's good to hear positive things ahead of the release date. Hopefully these performance stick.

Myself and SEVERAL other iPhone users (all are regular size 6, 5C, and 5S) – all having issues with Apple Maps. As in, it refuses to provide any directions other than walking. That’s right folks. No driving directions or public transit for you! Just use your feet and take a few days rather than hours to get somewhere. Apple tech support has not been able to figure it out yet and I have an appointment (earliest one is in several days) to see an Apple Genius (and probably just exchange the phone…) Or I will be reading how to downgrade to the previous OS.

Also the El Capitan on Desktop computer has been very glitchy and frustrating as well.

Stay away and wait for the bugs to be worked out if you haven’t already updated the OS (or unless you’re on a brand new machine, in which case you’re good. Seems to be the only thing it works on.)

That’s why smart people use Google maps instead of Apple maps.

    https://youtu.be/2v967zB91YI prob number-1

My iPhone 6 become soo laggy and sluggish after update ios9. I update it through latest itunes and set as new iphone.. Main problem is animation of UI or say motion of UI disappeared / off suddenly if u pinch spotlight search in the screen frequently.no motion work in UI than. Though motion reduction switch off in settings. Siri search in the new page introduced by ios9 is sooooo laggy. Spotlight is also laggy. Sometime spotlight search bar stuck in the status bar.. Totally UI problem. After lust update of ios 9.0.1,9.0.2,9.1problem exist . This is happening to my 4 friend’s phone also.. They are using iphone 6. After long week of disappointing experience i downgraded my 6’s ios to 8.4.1 and now it’s running buttery smooth and flawless. I want to use ios 9 just like ios 8.4.1 in my iphone6..i bought 6s 64 gb for avoiding this issue and for better performance .. Same prob and laggy in brand new 6s.. I astonished.!!!!! Is it possible?? Will apple do something regarding this issue??? Can apple’s os engineer fix it early? Mainly motion animation off automatically after 9.1 update. Other prob gone luckily. Fed up with one after another update.
In this video 6s is performing with this bug. Model-A-1688

sounds like you’ll need to set up your phone as new and not use any backups..sounds like you’re software may be corrupt.

      • Apple Dystopia

        10/23/2015 at 5:54 pm

Bad advice. The backup is just apps and content, like contacts. It is not the operating system. I run a site about Apple products and people usually say “I tried a full system reset back to factory defaults and it still didn’t work.” That’s becuase the problem is usually with iOS. I’ve been using Apple products for over a decade. In the past two years, their quality has declined immensely. For example, my Apple TV reboots itself 5 times a night, in the middle of a video. Many people have this problem, and Apple refuses to fix it. They haven’t released an update in 2 years… Just buy the new one iSheep.

Wiping out your iOS device and reinstalling everything is a projecting Windows desktop support onto Apple products. There is no registry to get corrupted. If the OS was corrupted, your device would be bricked.

Every time I mention a bug, someone says “oh, do a reset”. A soft reset can help (hold home and sleep/wake until you see the Apple logo. But they’re talking about restoring it to factory settings and reinstallng apps. I think it is a new form of trolling and online sociopathy — pushing people to do busywork that won’t fix a thing.

Its is happening to me the same thing, but only in my car connection, I can hear them but they can hear anything that I say, if I turn out the pairing with the car every thing is ok, and it was all working great before I did the upgrade to ios 9.1.

Unable to back up iPhone 6 to iCloud since 9 came out( seems to be a common problem for lots of users with some fixes working for some & not for others), slow to load pages, speeds up after switching airplane mode on then off. frequent requests to verify my apple I.D & various messages saying password is wrong or can’t connect then next time password is ok, phone’s name changed to “iPhone”, various passwords changed to old, outdated passwords, unable to sign in to face time, unable to use airdrop on MacBook until updated to El Capitan.Rapidly becoming Crapple.

Yep… Apple is no longer the trusty reliable name brand. Way too many issues… way too much of the time. I’ve been an Apple loyalist since 1984. No more. And it’s really simple actually… I basically cannot trust their products anymore. It’s just one major disappointment after another with each and every iOS release. There does come a point when one must admit that they’re insane if they keep doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results each time. Well, Apple keeps putting out very buggy software each and every time. They’re quite insane.

Nice keyword density. I took a sip of near beer every time I read “problem” and I actually got drunk. Let me help – there’s a problem with iOS 9.1 causing problems problems and more problems problems problems and if you upgrade you could have problems.

Crappy writing, but nice SEO trickery! Your article is ranked very high on the SERP.

I’m not amused with the 9.1 update. Both my ipad and iphone 5s are reluctant to play a video. Most of the time it takes ages to download and then it times out. So far 99 times out of a100 this happens. Any one else seen this problem also?

Any idea why the Calendar App in iOS 9.1 makes entering time zones for future meetings so hard? The “Time” location choices are lacking: NO Orlando, FL, No Nashville, TN, for example, and why can’t I just add EST or EDT, (the Time Zone) for example, if I know it?
The “time” function(?) changes/substitutes EDT/EST Etc. as the reult of finding the time zone for the named city.

Hi I have upgraded my iPad mini to IOS 9.1 and I noticed that my iPad mini batter life is much shorter. Even in standby mode battery drains out.

  22. Milosh Stojkovic

    10/29/2015 at 12:01 am

My battery is completely dead and I cant seem to charge my Iphone 5. After the update I had my phone plugged in and playing. Suddenly I see the “20% battery” message. I re-plug the charger and I get “Charged” – not “Charging” message displayed. I had to go out to my friends place. Took both my phone and charger. By the time I was there my Iphone 5 went completely out. After plugging it at my friends place I get the standard red bar (as in Charging mode while out of battery),but the phone never turned on. After coming home I’m still with a dead phone after 5 hours being plugged in. I’M EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTED.

      10/29/2015 at 12:32 am

Now this is going to sound funny. Just as I press the “Post Comment” button for my comment my Iphone turns on. I’m like “Shit, did the apple guys read my review on some random internet site and decided to help me out – I don’t even care if this can happen(I know it can’t),but you gotta wonder. My phone is on the charger at 1%. I quickly turn off Auto Brightness, lower the brightness to 0,turn ICloud Keychain off (basically I did a bunch of things that I read about here – https://www.gottabemobile.com/2015/10/22/how-to-fix-bad-ios-9-battery-life-2/)….10 seconds after I finished with all the high battery draining settings my phone dies again…while being on the charger, lol.

Massive disappointment after updating to 9.1 : no sound from Music app, Beats radio outputs static noise, youtube no sound, Siri no sound.
Restarted, sound comes backmand after a while it’s gone again.
Downgraded to 9.0.2 – all good, no sound issues.
Upgraded again – same issue. OMG. What happened to Apple this year? Here is the topic on their site.
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/29201593?ac_cid=op123456#
Raised a bug ticket with video to show the issue in : https://bugreport.apple.com/
Highly recommend everyone to report any issues there.

Same with texting, browsing intenet, pretty anything he does on his phone I get a popup. Unfortunately his phone does the same. It only happens when we are in the house together. Anyone know how to fix this.

I should have KNOWN BETTER than to do this (or most any) apple update. after loading 9.1, my phone will not do an icloud backup because the estimated time to backup is always 10 TO 15 HOURS !!! also my fingerprint ID no longer works well, if at all. WHY did I do this update.. I learned years ago that apple updates always do more harm than good.

I have the exact same problem as Vinold (see posting above), although I have an iPhone 5c. I upgraded to 9.1 last week. I can accept incoming phone calls but I am unable to make calls, view the Missed or Recent Calls lists, retrieve VoiceMail messages, or view my Contact List. As my only phone, I am now nearly dead in the water. I also lost all of my entries in Notes with this update. This “update” is simply inexcusable. I tried a reset last night but it did not work. Unbelievably, iTunes showed no previous sync or versions, and iCloud (using the same Apple ID and password) will not recognize my log in name and password. I am setting up an appointment at an Apple Genius Bar, anticipating I will be told I need a new iPhone costing hundreds of dollars. Fool me once, shame on me; fool me twice — I don’t think so.

My problem is Battery Life and when I go to Delete mail and or Trash it leaves the page then I go back and do it again all the e-mails are still there. ????

My iPad mini wifi connection fails frequently since the update. Battery drains quickly. Some apps disappeared after update. Apps grey-out when an update is available. I cannot choose to update, I have to update the app before I can use it. Enough is enough. I was an apple fan, but no more!

Just updated to 9.1 from 8.4.1, because there weren’t too many issues in 9.1, I thought.
Bitterly regret this now, only 1 day later. 8.4.1 was perfect on my 5s. Of course I took a backup (with old iTunes) before.

-no carrier: searching for the carrier 3 times a day (my SIM is OK). Reboot would help for some time. Reset Network settings: no joy. Could also not switch from 4G to 2/3G. WLAN was fine.
-new iTunes required, although itself stated it is actual…OK, just 160MB.
-tried to restore settings: nearly bricked my phone. Restore/update failed 5 times. For no reason it worked then eventually. Now I have a fresh phone… and again Searching for carrier after 2nd reboot! It did also not ask for the lock code of the SIM, only after 1st reboot. So, there must be an issue with 9.1.
-actual iTunes finds my phone, but the phone says ‘Connect to iTunes…’ Stuck there now, because no WiFi here…

    Never change a running system.

My Ipod touch 5 has the iOS 9.1 now half of my music will not play. Gives me an error: Wireless play, turn on cellular playback in Music in the settings App. But the IPOD touch does not have cellular playback. Has anyone come across this problem. Kind of aggravating.

    same thing here
I’m going to get away from Apple altogether.
People with droids rarely have problems !
contacts gone, battery loses charge – 9.1
screwed my phone up and I don’t have time
    to mess with it!

Is anyone else having problems with their iPad 4 (ios 9.1) especially with facetime. It has to do with camera video stream; as if camera frame rate has been capped. It feels as if you are communicating from web-cam era where frames would drop and video would stutter. Then there is poor connection. Newer devices seem to unaffected. Apple’s solution get a new ipad! It worked just fine, update ruined it!

iPhone 4s, upgraded to 9.1, hate my Apple product now, frustrating to use, Slow POS, everything is slow. Fixed everything that is ‘fixable’ (and if that makes sense to people, wow) I want to throw it in the street and watch it get smashed to bits. End of story. Pretty Sad. Where to go now?

Bought an iPhone 6 and updated to iOS 9.1. Since then I can’t upload any emails!!! Local sprint dealers won’t do anything. When my contract ends I’m considering changing dealers.

its a total fail on my 4s, everything is slower. Apps are slow to open, the phone is slow to open after entering passcode. Siri doen’t beep (stupidiest thing) and is slow to respond or be in ready mode. Phone constantly crashed. I can’t open up many links in Facebook, I could go on and on and on and on. Damn you Appple!! I hate my phone now.

I can no longer text message on my ipad using phone number, it only uses my email address. Imagine my surprise when I am Messaging people and they say who is this because they don’t know my email address. Can’t believe they changed this feature. I have since sold my ipad and will never buy another one. They want me to upgrade to Wifi + carrier ipad but I spend enough money on apple products to buy another paperweight. Thanks apple. My support is diminishing as the years go on.
