iOS 9.2 Update: What We Know So Far

Published

on

With two iOS 9.2 beta updates in the books, we know quite a bit about the new iOS 9 update that will be coming to iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. Today, we want to recap all of those details and tell you about everything we know, so far, about the iOS 9.2 update.

In October, Apple confirmed an iOS 9.2 release for the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. The update arrived, in beta form, just a week after the release of another major iOS 9 update, iOS 9.1.

Apple didn’t roll out the red carpet for the iOS 9.2 update or make a bunch of promises to iPhone, iPad and iPod touch users. Instead, it confirmed the update like it confirms many upcoming iOS updates: Through a beta.

The iOS 9.2 beta has been ongoing since October and it’s not clear how long the process might take. Some updates have emerged after a few weeks, some after a few months. It’s hard to tell with the iOS 9,2 update though we do know the company is making progress behind the scenes.

Earlier this month, Apple released its iOS 9.2 beta 2 for developers and those in the Beta Software Program. The Beta Software Program is Apple’s public beta program that allows anyone with an Apple ID to try out iOS software ahead the public release date.

Thanks to these testers, we’ve learned a lot about the iOS 9.2 release and today we want to recap everything we know, right now, about Apple’s next big iOS 9 update.

“Will I Get iOS 9.2?”

The iOS 9.2 update is starting to steal some of the spotlight from the iOS 9.1 update that rolled out in late October. And as the spotlight starts to shift, we’re starting to see more and more people gain interest in iOS 9.2.

As interest in the iOS 9.2 update has picked up, so have the questions. One question we continue to get about the release sounds something like this: “Will my device get the iOS 9.2 update?” It’s an honest question if following software updates and mobile technology isn’t your thing. Here’s your answer.

If your device is capable of running iOS 9, you will get iOS 9.2. If you aren’t sure if your device runs iOS 9, here’s a full list of the device compatible with Apple’s current operating system:

iOS 9.2 Release Date

The other question that’s continually come up since the first iOS 9.2 beta release is a question about the update’s release date. iPhone and iPad users want to know when Apple’s going to release iOS 9.2 to the public.

The iOS 9.2 release date is currently unknown but we do have one possible clue. That clue comes from the well-sourced Mark Gurman from 9to5Mac.

Gurman doesn’t have a specific iOS 9.2 release date to share but in a recent report he says that iOS 9.2 will “likely bring support for the new American Express Apple Pay partnership for Canada and Australia.” Keyword: likely.

During the company’s Q4 earnings call, Tim Cook confirmed plans to expand to Canada and Australia in 2015. This doesn’t confirm an iOS 9.2 release date for 2015 but it means that a release sometime later this year is possible.

Apple only confirms iOS release dates on stage during launch events and with no event in sight, we might see the iOS 9.2 release date emerge out of the blue.

iOS 9.2 Beta

Before the iOS 9.2 release date we have the iOS 9.2 beta. The beta is available for developers and the general public.

In the days since the first release, we’ve put together some resources that will help those of you interested in trying the iOS 9.2 beta. Early software’s not for everyone but take a look at our guide if you’re interested in making the move.

Thanks to testers, we’ve learned a little bit about the iOS 9.2 update’s performance. It’s still early but many testers are saying that the update is an improvement over the iOS 9.1 update and the iOS 9 updates that came before it.

We’ve tracked down a few videos that showcase iOS 9.2 and its performance on several well-known devices including the iPhone 5s, iPhone 4s, and more.

iOS 9.2 Features

We’ve learned a little about the iOS 9.2 update’s performance and we’ve also learned some things about the iOS 9.2 update’s features.

Arabic Support for Siri

iOS 9.2 will deliver Arabic support for Siri. If you don’t speak or use Arabic, no big deal. If you are an Arabic speaker, this is absolutely huge.

As Gurman points out, the addition comes on the heels of the grand opening of Apple’s new flagship store in the United Arab Emirates. The company opened two stores in the UAE. One in Abu Dhabi and the other in Dubai.

NumberSync on AT&T

The iOS 9.2 update is also set to deliver NumberSync on AT&T.

NumberSync will let iOS 9.2 users make Wi-Fi calls from other devices (iPad/Mac) connected to the iPhone’s number as long as the device is connected to the same Wi-Fi network as the iPhone.

Safari Extensions

The iOS 9.2 update will also bring in-app improvements to Safari. These improvements can be seen in the video below.

Apple Pay

Again, Gurman claims that iOS 9.2 could bring American Express Apple Pay support for Australia and Canada.

Bug Fixes

It’s also worth noting that the iOS 9.2 update should come with bug fixes for lingering iOS 9 problems. Developers have discovered numerous bug fixes lurking on board the beta software and many of these will carry over to the public version of iOS.

iOS 9 problems continue to plague iPhone, iPad and iPod touch users as we push away from last month’s iOS 9.1 update.

iOS 9 vs iOS 8: What’s New in iOS 9

iOS 9 vs iOS 8 Walkthrough - Home Screen

The image above shows that the iOS 9 home screen looks very much like the one on iOS 8. This is not surprising, but you will notice one major change to this screen.

The new iOS 9 font on the home page carries over through settings and apps. It's surprising how much the look of the system can change with a small tweak to a new font.

From the home screen you can now swipe left to a new search screen, and you can still swipe down to Spotlight from any of the home screen pages.

When you upgrade you will also see options to add iCloud Drive to your home screen.

Apple adds two new default iOS 9 apps that you cannot delete. Find iPhone and Find Friends apps now come with the iPhone by default. You can hide them in a folder, but you cannot delete the apps. The Find My iPhone app is a very good addition, while Find My Friends is still not as widely used.
