iPad 2 Beats the Xoom and Original iPad in Benchmarks

Published

Anandtech, known for doing great performance benchmarks of tech, put the iPad 2, Motorola Xoom and original iPad through a battery of tests and found that the iPad 2 blows the socks off the other two entries. As part of their comprehensive review, they tested the tablets and found that the iPad 2 is more than double the speed of the Xoom and nearly five times faster than the first iPad in graphics tests.

Steve Jobs said that video tests would show a 9X improvement. We didn’t believe that, but seeing that it is nearly 5X faster is amazing. Our review showed that it was noticeably faster. And when Xavier reviewed the Xoom, one of the things that led him to return it was the beta-like feel of the tablet.

What does this mean for the average user? It means that if you have one of the new iPads, you won’t have to wait as much to see it respond to your fingers. If you got a Xoom, you may be disappointed. And if you have an original iPad, you will enjoy the upgrade.

According to this web site… spec’s don’t matter.

Specs don’t generally matter to consumers. Experiences do and if the gadgetry results in a better experience I’m all for it. What I don’t like is spec marketing for specs sake.

Speed of the graphics engine =/= speed of the processor or the tablet… Xoom still has the faster processor, and of course the fps was lower for the Xoom…… IT’S OF A HIGHER RESOLUTION.

Well both the Xoom’s Tegra 2 and iPad 2’s A5 use the same dual-core Cortex A9’s CPU so neither is “faster” especially if you factor in GUI performance and other variables. It’s like going back to Windows XP versus Vista, XP is quicker because it’s simpler.

The difference in resolution is about 23% but performance does not drop 23% each time you go up to a higher resolution. The drop has a number of factors including things such as the fillrate of the GPU. Even if you added 23% to the Xoom’s scores it’s still around half of what the iPad 2 is getting. The GPU is just faster in the iPad 2 regardless of resolution. That only matters if games actually take advantage of it though. I think Infinity Blade is probably the best looking game I’ve seen on a tablet so far and that was made on the iPad 1’s SGX535 not the iPad 2’s SGX543MP2. What will Infinity Blade 2 look like? I can’t imagine most developers spending the extra resources to max it out anyway though.

One thing you fail to point out is that the Xoom’s platform takes more to run it because Honeycomb is much more in depth than the plain iOS. Because iOS 4.3 is not nearly as powerful as Honeycomb, the ipad2 should have higher benchmarks. If the Xoom ran a comparable version of iOS as it’s platform, it would perform just as good, If not a little better than iPad2. If the user wants very little customization and a simplistic UI, the. The iPad fits the bill. However, if you want total control over your tablet and true multitasking without the limitations Apple throws in your way, the Xoom is clearly the better choice.
