iPad mini 2 Production Hints at November Release

Published

The iPad mini 2 release date could arrive in November, around the time Apple launched the iPad mini in 2012. The iPad mini 2 will also feature a Retina Display, according to a new report.

These new details come from reports on Apple production of iPad mini 2 displays, which claim the production is already underway at levels similar to this time last year, and which specifically call out a Retina Display.

The iPad mini launched without Apple’s high-resolution display, but it appears that Apple is putting a 7.9-inch Retina Display with a 2048 x 1536 resolution in the new iPad mini, which would increase the pixel density to 324 ppi — which means sharper looking text and better looking photos and videos.

The iPad mini 2 is rumored for later this year.

CNet cites an IHS iSuppli source as claiming the iPad mini 2 displays are already in production, and that they are indeed a Retina Display. Vinita Jakhanwal, the director of mobile & emerging displays at IHS iSuppli told CNet,

” Based [what] we are seeing in the [production] pipeline…The volumes are similar to the iPad Mini that we saw in Q4 of last year,”

Apple announced the iPad mini in late October and released it in mid-November. These production details line up with rumors suggesting an iPad event on the books for October, where Apple could launch a new iPad mini 2 and an iPad 5.

There is still no confirmation of an iPad mini 2 with a Retina Display, but multiple recent reports point to a new iPad mini with the same design, but a new and improved display. Apple would likely need to boost the processor power with the iPad mini 2 to support the higher resolution display.

Early rumors suggested the iPad 5 release would come ahead of an iPad mini 2, allowing Apple to place a greater amount of attention on the full size iPad, but as we move close to the fall it looks like we could see a iPad event where the focus is on two new iPad models, possibly with a staggered release into the holiday season.

The iPad 5 will reportedly borrow the iPad mini design and use the same touch screen technology, which could combine to form a thinner and lighter iPad. A new iPad that would offer more reason for consumers to upgrade from an aging iPad 2 or iPad 3, than the iPad 4 release did.
