iPad’s Retina Display is, “Stunning”, “Glorious”, “Not just a Spec”

The Retina Display on the new iPad is the highest resolution display Apple has ever produced. Like the iPhone 4 and 4S before it, the new iPad’s display makes it very difficult to see individual pixels on the screen.

Unfortunately we haven’t received our new iPad just yet so we have to rely on the word and videos on the journalists who were able to get some time with the tablet when it was announced.

The new iPad has a number of features, but the Retina Display is the feature that Apple is counting on to sell the new iPad, and convince users to upgrade to the new iPad.

Ryan Block of GDGT said “when I pulled up a nice, high-resolution photograph on the iPad 3rd-gen, I genuinely could not tell the difference between what I was seeing onscreen, and a nice, beautifully shot, well-printed, glossy photograph. It was seriously to that level.” Or, to put it another way, “It’s the best display I’ve ever seen. Anywhere, period. And it makes a meaningful difference to the experience — it’s not just a spec.”

Joshua Topolsky of The Verge was similarly impressed with the Retina Display. In his words “the New iPad’s 2048 x 1536 screen is stunning to behold. Simply put, there’s no other product like it on the market.” He also has a video of the new iPad in which he talks about the new iPad. Watch the in HD to get the full effect of just how great this new display looks.

MG Siegler of TechCrunch called the new display “glorious.” He goes on to talk about the new display compared to the iPad 2, saying “you’ll never be able to use a non-Retina iPad again. The new iPad display makes everything look like a printed photograph. By comparison, the old iPad display makes everything look as if I’ve taken my glasses off. Blurry.”

Vincent Nguyen of SlashGear didn’t have nearly as much to say about the Retina Display. His only comments were “the picture quality is so crisp it looks like a promotional mock-up. Viewing angles are huge, too, certainly on a par with what we’ve seen from Super AMOLED panels in recent months.”

Darren Murph at Engadget was also brief in talking about the display. He found the “colors are sharp and accurate, and viewing angles are predictably ridiculous; even taking a peek from an extreme side angle gives way to a fairly solid image with next to no washout.”

The new iPad’s Retina Display has a resolution many times higher than your HDTV, clocking in at 2048 × 1536. For  a closer look at the Retina Display, check out this video below.
