iOS 9 Download Size & Installation Issues

If you own an 8GB or 16GB iPhone 4s, know that the iOS 9 installation is going to be easier than past iOS installations.

Instead of requiring 4GB+ of free space to install like previous iOS updates, the iOS 9 update should require in and around 1.3GB of free space on the iPhone 4s. (That exact number is for the iPhone 6 update but we don't expect there to be a massive difference.)

So, there's no need to go deleting a ton of files on your phone unless you're extremely close to the threshold. And you might be. If that's the case, use the next three days to clean up your device and get rid of files you don't need.

If you do run into installation issues, either with a lack of free space or something else, know there are some easy fixes.

If you don't want to delete anything, you can plug your iPhone 4s into iTunes and install iOS 9 that way. iTunes can be a little finicky during peak hours so if you don't want to risk running into download/installation issues, you'll want to wait a few hours (or longer) before installing.

If you do decide to install and the update locks up, you'll want to restart your iPhone 4s by holding down the home button and the power button at the same time. Wait 10 seconds, it will reboot, and so should your installation.
