iPhone 5 Announced

The iPhone 5 is taller and thinner with a 4-inch display.

Apple designed a thinner iPhone 5, which measures 7.6mm thick. The new iPhone is also taller thanks to a bigger 4-inch display, measuring slightlyt taller than the iPhone 4S. It is 20% lighter than the iPhone 4S at 112 grams.

The headphone jack is now on the bottom of the iPhone 5 and the back of the iPhone 5 is no longer glass like the iPhone 4S. The new design brings an aluminum back to the iPhone 5 with a two-tone look.

The star of this new design is the 4-inch display with a 16:9 aspect ratio and it still features a 326 PPI. The new screen is taller than the iPhone 4S display, but the same width, with a 1136 x 640 resolution. While this is not an HD 720P display like on many Android phones the new aspect ratio will show more content and less black lines.

The new display is not wider, allowing users to type with one hand.

iPhone 5 owners will enjoy 10x faster downloads thanks to 4G LTE connectivity in the new iPhone. Verizon boasts the largest 4G LTE markets, but AT&T and Sprint announced plans to expand coverage within the next several months. the video below shows the speed benefits of 4G LTE on the iPad.

The iPhone 5 features 4G LTE.

The iPhone 5 also features HSPA+ and DC-HSDPA. Apple says this is a single chip and a single radio with a dynamic antenna. The iPhone 5 also features 802.11n 2.4GHz and 5GHz connectivity.

Apple chose to power the iPhone 5 with an Apple A6 dual-core processor. Apple claims this is 22% smaller and 2 times faster as a CPU and 2 times faster than GPU. This allows users to launch apps like Pages 2.1 times faster, and save images from iPhoto 1.7 times faster and load the music app 1.9 times faster.

Apple claims longer battery life than the iPhone 4S, promising 8 hours of LTE browsing on the iPhone 5 battery. 225 hours of standby time.

The new iPhone 5 camera features an 8MP camera with a 3264 x 2448 with backside illumination and a five element lens like the iPhone $S. The new camera features a f/2.4 aperture. Apple claims 40% faster photo capture than on the iPhone 4S.  Users can now take photos while shooting video.

The front facing camera is a FaceTime HD camera capable of 720P. This update pairs well with the FaceTime over cellular feature in iOS 6 that lets users make video calls away from WiFi.

The iPhone 5 features 3 microphones, one on the front, one on the bottom and one on the rear of the iPhone.

Lightning Dock Connector iPhone 5

The new dock connector is smaller and fits in either direction.

Apple includes a new dock connector called Lightning. This is a new all digital 8-signal design. Users can plug this cable in in either direction. It is 80% smaller and improved durability.

The iPhone 5 price starts at $199 for the 16GB model, $299 for the 32GB model and $399 for the 64GB model. Apple did not announce the off contract prices, but we expect the 16GB iPhone 5 will start at $649, with $100 increases as storage size increases.
