iPhone 5 Cases Sized Up for Larger 4″ Display

We’ve seen plenty of iPhone 5 mockups and an invasion of iPhone 5 cases in China, but now we get a closer look at just how these cases measure up.

MacRumors ordered some of these third-party iPhone 5 cases, based off of early design leaks to prove that they are up for public sale and to measure them. Form this experiment we know that there are a number of iPhone 5 cases being mass-produced in China, which means manufacturers feel confident in the leaked information.

We also have a better look at what these cases look like when measured, and with an iPhone 4 sitting inside them, thanks to Macitynet.it — both of which give us a better idea of what the iPhone 5 may look like .

As you can see, the iPhone 4 looks small in the suspected iPhone 5 case. MacRumors measured the case and found that it roughly measures 4.7″ x 2.6″ with a thickness ranging from .30″ at the top to .065 at the bottom. The iPhone 4 is 4.5″ x 2.31″ and has a thickness of  .37″.

If this is a case that will really fit the iPhone 5, we should expect a larger 4″ display and a tapered back, which borrows the design principles from the MacBook Air. The tapered back helps trick your eyes into seeing a thinner device. Some users have raised concerns about holding the device if it has a tapered back, worried that it could be top-heavy, but there are ways that Apple could balance out the phone even with this design.

As you can see, this case is designed for a thinner phone than the iPhone 4, especially at the bottom. The iPod Touch is currently .28″ thick, which means the iPhone 5 could be slimmer than the iPod Touch in several places. That’s pretty incredible considering the size of many competing phones. Hopefully you don’t need to thicken it up with an extended battery case in order to use it for a full day.
