iPhone 5 Pre-Orders Blow past 2 Million as Ship Dates Slip to October

Published

The iPhone 5 isn’t even on store shelves yet, but it’s already sold over 2 million units in the first 24 hours — double the 1 million iPhone 4s pre-orders from 2011.

iPhone 5 buyers waiting for the iPhone 5 will be waiting even longer now as Apple says, “demand for iPhone 5 exceeds the initial supply.”

Many of these new iPhone 5 orders made at Apple.com and with carriers won’t be delivered until October. The ship dates on Apple and on Verizon now list a 2-3 week wait for the iPhone 5 in black and white for all sizes. These dates could slip to 3-4 weeks before Apple is able to match the demand for the iPhone 5.

Apple Stores open at 8 AM on Friday morning, and we believe many carrier locations will be open early to sell the iPhone 5 to lines of shoppers. The iPhone 5 lines are already in place in New York, but most of these line waiters are there for publicity, not the new iPhone.

Apple Stores will likely boast the biggest stock of iPhone 5 models on launch day, but users would be wise to look past the glowing Apple logo to a nearby corporate Verizon, AT&T or Sprint store. These locations don’t typically carry as much stock, but lines are often shorter and the chance of getting an iPhone 5 is good.

The iPhone 5 is Apple’s sixth generation handset, now featuring a 4-inch display and a 4G LTE connection. Users looking for help making a purchase decision should check out the following iPhone 5 guides.
