iPhone 5s vs Galaxy S5: Fingerprint Scanners Compared

Published

on

The Samsung Galaxy S5 was announced back in February at Mobile World Congress, but it’s not officially launching until later this week. However, one lucky YouTuber was able to get his hands on the device early and test out the built-in fingerprint scanner ahead of the phone’s release.

The YouTuber, who goes by the name iCrackUriDevice, compares the software and hardware of the fingerprint scanners of the both the iPhone 5s and the Galaxy S5. The video demonstrates the setup process of both devices, as well as which phone performs the best as far as how well it scans your fingerprint and unlocks the device.

The Galaxy S5’s fingerprint scanner requires that users swipe their finger downward, while the iPhone 5s’s Touch ID simply just requires owners to place their finger on the Home button. Because of this difference, the iPhone 5s is a bit better at recognizing different finger placements, while the Galaxy S5 mostly requires that you swipe directly down and dead-center of the Home button.

The way the Galaxy S5’s fingerprint scanner works doesn’t really allow users to scan a finger with just one hand, but the iPhone 5s Touch ID scanner allows for easy one-handed use.

Of course, one of the big advantages of the Galaxy S5’s fingerprint scanner is the ability to authorize payments with PayPal, while the iPhone 5s Touch ID has its limits at the moment, only allowing users to unlock their iPhone and buy apps in the iTunes App Store.

Overall, the video doesn’t demonstrate anything that we didn’t already know, but it’s a good side-by-side comparison of the two technologies in a more intimate and personal environment.

Apple debuted its Touch ID fingerprint sensor back in September with the launch of the iPhone 5s, making it the first major flagship smartphone to include a fingerprint scanner, and then Samsung followed up with its own fingerprint scanner-equipped smartphone by announcing the Galaxy S5 back in February.

I am not having any issue with directional swipe on my GS5(best phone I have ever owned). I can almost swipe it at a 45 degree angle(either direction) and it still works. I do however take issue with having to use both hands, or have it on a stable surface to do the swipe. Apple definitely edges there. We’ll see how the stationary apple vs swipe samsung hold up over time, since the swipe eventually causes wear and tear, and the other will probably not.
