iPhone 6 Bending Problems Aren’t a Big Deal

Published

on

While the launch of the iPhone 6 was one of Apple’s best opening weekend releases ever for the iPhone, the company isn’t getting let off easy. The internet has been buzzing lately over some users noticing that their iPhone 6 Plus units slightly bend while tucked in their pocket, but this “fiasco” probably isn’t anything to worry about.

Recently a video was published on YouTube featuring a montage of over 300 photos of bent iPhone 6 units, all of which came from different users who reported that their iPhone 6s became slightly bent after normal use.

Many argue while this may not affect a majority of users, there still could be thousands of iPhone 6 users that haven’t reported a bent iPhone, meaning that this 300 number could actually be a lot bigger if you accounted for every single bent iPhone 6 that’s out there.

Is this problem worth skipping the iPhone 6 or canceling an already-purchased iPhone 6 and switching to another phone?

Probably not.

If we were to do some math with this “epidemic,” we take those 300 iPhone 6 units and figure out what percentage that is compared to all iPhone 6 units that have been sold so far.

Apple sold over 10 million iPhone 6s over launch weekend alone, and that number has definitely gone up since the device’s release back in September, but even we take those 10 million iPhone 6s, 300 of them only accounts for 0.003% of the iPhones sold.

Heck, let’s even say that the number of bent iPhones rose to 10,000. That’s still only 0.1% of all the iPhones that were sold, and that’s just counting iPhones that were sold over launch weekend.

Apple has been rather quiet about this specific issue, and it seems like the company isn’t replacing bent iPhone 6 units since it doesn’t seem to be covered under the traditional AppleCare warranty. However, Apple has said in the past that was “looking into this with an insane amount of detail, ” but it looks like there’s nothing they can really do to prevent the problem from happening again, seeing as they would have to redesign the phone completely in order to strengthen its structural integrity. The company will have to wait until the iPhone 6s or the iPhone 7 before making changes.

In any case, a phone made out of thin aluminum will bend with the right amount of force, so we don’t see this as something incredibly surprising. In fact, there were several reports back when the iPhone 5s released of units bending in people’s pockets. Of course, the amount of attention the issue got was nothing compared to what the iPhone 6 “bendgate” is receiving now, which is rather unfortunate, since this issue is nothing new.

So what can you do to prevent your iPhone 6 from bending like this? For starters, a little bit of common sense goes a long way: don’t put your iPhone 6 in your back pocket and sit on it. Furthermore, it’s a good idea to not where tight pants with tight pockets that could restrict the movement of the iPhone 6 in your front pocket, which could lead to a slow bend in the device whenever you go to sit down.

Many users put their smartphones on the desk or table in front of them if they’re sitting down, not only to have easy access to it when they need it, but it also prevents any kind of accidental damage from occurring.

Otherwise, if you notice your iPhone 6 is bent, take it into your local Apple Store and see if you can get a free replacement. You may or may not be able to, but it’s at least worth a shot. Then again, based on statistics, it’s highly unlikely that you’ll come across a bent iPhone 6.

It should be skipped because it’s a crappy iPhone not because it bends because it’s not the nexus 6

You people are such Apple kiss asses it makes me sick. In real world usage EVERY iPhone 6 plus will bend unless you treat it with kid gloves. It’s a badly designed cheaply made low tech device with a cute logo.

Low tech? So that’s why The Iphone 6 and 6 plus beat out just about every other device in the benchmark test? Dumb Fandroid.
