iPhone 6 Bending Problems Dismissed by Apple

Published

on

While the launch of the iPhone 6 was one of Apple’s best opening weekend releases ever for the iPhone, the company isn’t getting let off easy. Many users have been noticing that their iPhone 6 bends while in their pocket.

While there has been enough attention to warrant Apple to address the issue and replace affected units, it seems that many users aren’t being granted free replacements after all. Plus, the number of iPhone 6 owners complaining about bent devices seems to keep growing.

One Reddit users says that he went into an Apple Store to get a replacement iPhone 6 Plus after he discovered that it became slightly bent. Unfortunately, contrary to what Apple says, the Genius Bar worker nor the store manager wouldn’t grant him a replacement device.

The Genius Bar employee told the iPhone 6 Plus owner that “Apple has not indicated to us at this time that this is a manufacturing issue.” The employee then told the owner that he could use one of his AppleCare+ claims in order to get a replacement, but that also requires a deductible.

The owner then proceeded to talk to the store manager, who reiterated what the Genius Bar employee said, stating that “Apple has told us that it is not a problem with the phones […] We are not replacing bent phones at this time.”

iPhone 6 bending

Similarly, another Reddit user went to the Apple Store to get his bent iPhone 6 replaced, only to be turned away by the Genius Bar employee, saying that “there is no way your phone could have bent like that in your pocket” and that the user had to have applied excessive force on the phone, wrongfully implying that he had bent it on purpose

The employee told him that if he wanted the phone replaced, it would be an out-of-warranty repair at a cost of $369AUD.

This goes against what Apple said late last month, telling users that they would replace bent iPhone 6 device, as long as the device passed a few guidelines and a visual inspection. We’re not quite sure what these guidelines are, but the owner mentioned above had an iPhone 6 Plus that was in pristine condition before it slightly bent.

Apple also said that getting a replacement would be “100% up to the Genius that you speak with at the Apple Store.” However, that no longer seems to be the case, since many Geniuses and mangers alike seem to be following a new store policy that customers are unaware of now.

Apple has been rather quiet about this specific issue, but that’s likely because the fiasco of iOS 8.0.1 has garnered a lot of attention as well. However, Apple said that it has been “looking into this with an insane amount of detail.” However, it looks like there’s nothing they can do to prevent the problem from happening again, seeing as they would have to redesign the phone completely in order to strengthen its structural integrity.

In any case, a phone made out of thin aluminum will bend with the right amount of force, so we don’t see this as something incredibly surprising. In fact, there were several reports back when the iPhone 5s released of units bending in people’s pockets. Of course, the amount of attention the issue got was nothing compared to what the iPhone 6 “bendgate” is receiving, which is rather unfortunate, since this issue is nothing new.

So what can you do to prevent your iPhone 6 from bending like this? For starters, a little bit of common sense goes a long way: don’t put your iPhone 6 in your back pocket and sit on it. Furthermore, it’s a good idea to not wear tight pants with tight pockets that could restrict the movement of the iPhone 6 in your front pocket, which could lead to a slow bend in the device.

Many users put their smartphones on the desk or table in front of them if they’re sitting down, not only to have easy access to it when they need it, but it also prevents any kind of accidental damage from occurring.

Otherwise, if you notice your iPhone 6 is bent, you can try to take it into your local Apple Store and see if you can get a free replacement. It seems like you might not be able to, but with enough persistence, you may get by.

You can just get a Note 4. No bending.
Consumer Reports performed an independent test called a three-point flexural examination using an Instron Compression Test machine. What did they find? Surprise, surprise, the iPhone 6 Plus caved under only 90 pounds of pressure, and the iPhone 6 only 70 lbs. Pathetic. They scored dead last with the iPhone 6 tied with HTC One M8. Who was in first place? The Galaxy Note 3, which survived a mighty 150 lbs of force before bending. That’s MORE THAN TWICE as strong as the iPhone 6. Impressive.

But it’s nice to know Apple doesn’t stand behind their products, and lies to their customers about it.

This is simple physics . The strength of any material lies in its outer layers . By Apple choosing to go back to a round shape all the load is in the middle of the side instead of 2 loading points and the increased strength of a bend on each side with a square shape . Not rocket science ! Perhaps case manufacturers will have to stiffen up their options !

I own the iPhone 6 and mine seriously bent in my pocket i wasn’t wearing tight pants or anything. I took it to the local apple store and the “genius” I had called me a liar and told me that there is no way that it could have just bent in my pocket. I have no idea what caused the phone to bend but it did and i was pretty confused myself I have owned every iPhone and the 6 is by far the worst iPhone made I have never have had to be concerned about my phone bending in my pocket and the fact that I have had my phone in a case and haven’t dropped it once or done anything that should have damaged the phone to make me have to buy a new one is very frustrating! I own so many apple products and I’m very disappointed in the way apple is handling this situation. The fact is they don’t care if they lose their customers because they already have enough people buying their products.

To be clear cut and clean. They iPhones bend in a fast pace use. I don’t if it because of the battery overheating the metal when charging or case. They bend and not only why isn’t that cover under a warranty. Hold up they said AppleCare covers bends and bents. Something being cover up and if Steve Jobs was here I would be getting my device replace

@ shamaar first of all did you have it in your pocket?? Second most such as I did wanted a thinner and bigger screen!! Things need to come in common sense!! It’s bigger and obviously we have to be more careful with them so don’t blame apple!! And cell phone will bend or break even android crap!! So if you don’t like apple don’t buy it I don’t have and issues with my 6 plus iPhone, it’s called a case!! Nuff said!!

Hey Larry Thanks for your feedback. Don’t have a problem with Apple. We know they have the best phones well the best operating system. Yes Larry I have had my phone in my pocket all type of pockets. But to sit on it and bend. That’s just plan stupid. Let me ask you this Larry. Have you had 3G 4 4s 5 5s cause I had all of them and they been in all my pockets and none of them ever bend or crack. So cut the crap with that one. Answer this question. Why doesn’t the one year warranty cover the bents. But Applecare does. Also tell me why my screen freezes when I’m trying to turn and write a text messages. I’m not complaining because I understand things are not going to work perfect but I’m not worry because later down the road when you take your 6 plus out that case it’s going to be bent. Then later on down the road you’ll be complaining. And you probably just got that plus because on release date they wasn’t even in stock. But thanks for the feedback Larry. I’m not your. Enemy I just have a issues. And I think they know about it.

But pockets not my thing sorry!!! But screens freezing up I had that on the 4s but a I tunes restore fixed that

But yes they bend it’s not like how they make it on YouTube but you can notice it. Just have to throw it in one of those ugly otter box and keep it moving. What’s up Larry got any new information for me today.
