iPhone 6 Complaints Point to Easily-Scratched Screens

Published

on

While the iPhone 6 is said to have ion-strengthened glass that’s supposedly more durable than the last generation, users are reporting that the screen is scratching rather easily, even while taking very good care of the phone.

Many users have taken to Apple’s Support Communities to express their frustration with the glass display on the iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 Plus, saying that their devices are producing surface scratches even though they’re taking extremely good care of their devices.

The thread has almost 700 replies, proving that it’s just not a minor issue with a handful of users, but is rather affecting a large number of iPhone 6 owners. Some users are even comparing the screen durability to the iPhone 5s, with one user claiming he never got a scratch on his unprotected iPhone 5s, but less than a week into the iPhone 6, a scratch appeared on the display.

To give you an example of what users are dealing with exactly, AppleInsider has a photo of a scratched iPhone 6 that’s been kept secure in a microfiber sleeve (below). The image shows the iPhone 6 with several small scratches close together, suggesting that the screen rubbed against an abrasive surface of some kind.

It’s not officially known what kind of glass the iPhone 6 is sporting, as Apple never revealed that to the public, but the device is most likely using Corning’s Gorilla Glass 3, which is a toughened version of glass that can withstand scratches more so than normal glass.

While this issue probably won’t cause as much uproar as the iPhone 6 bending issues have caused, it definitely still seems to be a big concern for a lot of iPhone 6 owners.

While the launch of the iPhone 6 was one of Apple’s best opening weekend releases ever for the iPhone, the company certainly isn’t getting let off easy. The internet has been buzzing lately over some users noticing that their iPhone 6 Plus units slightly bend while tucked in their pocket, but this “fiasco” probably isn’t anything to worry about anyway.

Apple has been rather quiet about this specific issue, and it seems like the company isn’t replacing bent iPhone 6 units since it doesn’t seem to be covered under the traditional AppleCare warranty. However, Apple has said in the past that was “looking into this with an insane amount of detail, ” but it looks like there’s nothing they can really do to prevent the problem from happening again, seeing as they would have to redesign the phone completely in order to strengthen its structural integrity. The company will have to wait until the iPhone 6s or the iPhone 7 before making changes.

In any case, a phone made out of thin aluminum will bend with the right amount of force, so we don’t see this as something incredibly surprising. In fact, there were several reports back when the iPhone 5s released of units bending in people’s pockets. Of course, the amount of attention the issue got was nothing compared to what the iPhone 6 “bendgate” is receiving now, which is rather unfortunate, since this issue is nothing new.

So what can you do to prevent your iPhone 6 from bending like this? For starters, a little bit of common sense goes a long way: don’t put your iPhone 6 in your back pocket and sit on it. Furthermore, it’s a good idea to not where tight pants with tight pockets that could restrict the movement of the iPhone 6 in your front pocket, which could lead to a slow bend in the device whenever you go to sit down.

Many users put their smartphones on the desk or table in front of them if they’re sitting down, not only to have easy access to it when they need it, but it also prevents any kind of accidental damage from occurring.

Otherwise, if you notice your iPhone 6 is bent, take it into your local Apple Store and see if you can get a free replacement. You may or may not be able to, but it’s at least worth a shot. Then again, based on statistics, it’s highly unlikely that you’ll come across a bent iPhone 6.
