iPhone 6 with 4.7-inch & 5.7-inch Display Options Rumored for 2014

The latest report from a well respected industry analyst points to an iPhone 6 with two display options in early 2014 and an iPad mini 2 release with a Retina Display this year.

According to this report these two new devices will kick off Apple’s use of displays to innovate in 2014 which will eventually lead to a larger iPad with a 12.9-inch display and a higher resolution as well as a MacBook Air with Retina resolution, an Apple TV set and the iWatch.

This is not the first time we’ve heard reports of these devices or that we’ve heard of release and launch timing, but the NPD DisplaySearch’s focus on displays and track record for accurately predicting the iPad 3’s Retina Display several months before release lends credibility to this latest claim.

David Hsieh, an analyst with NPD DisplaySearch outlines Apple’s potential products for the rest of this year and into 2014. Hsieh’s report helps fill in the blanks left from Tim Cook’s summer brag. During Apple’s earnings call in July Tim Cook told investors and customers to look forward to, “amazing new products that we will introduce in the fall and across 2014.”

The new outline of Apple’s upcoming products comes from DisplaySearch’s investigation of supply chain sources and leads Hsieh to believe that 2014 will bring many new display offerings in well-known Apple products.

iPhone 6

According to NPD DisplaySearch, the iPhone 6 release will come faster in 2014, by Q2 which lines up with earlier analyst reports of a June iPhone 6 release. This would be a switch from the recent fall iPhone launches, but not out of the question if Apple wants to cut the time competitors like HTC and Samsung gain from spring smartphone launches.

Apple is reportedly investigating multiple iPhone 6 display sizes from 4.8-inches up to a 6-inches according to sources who spoke with The Wall Street Journal earlier this year. Additionally an alleged iPhone 6 prototype appeared in 2012 with a 4.8-inch display and Peter Misek an analyst with Jeffries & Co. believes we will see an iPhone 6 with a 4.8-inch display next year.

NPD DisplaySearch believes Apple is planning an iPhone 6 with a larger screen, but that the company will take a page out of competitor playbooks to offer multiple sizes. Here’s what we could expect, which could complement an iPhone 5s in a lineup that fills multiple consumer segments.

  • 4.7-inch display with 1280×720 resolution, 312 ppi
  • 5.7-inch display with 1920×1080 resolution, 386 ppi

Apple could also change the iPhone design to deliver a larger screen inside a similar overall form factor. The iPhone 5s and Moto X are similar in size despite the larger 4.7-inch display in the Moto X.

The iPhone 6 could use a 4.7-inch display without increasing the size significantly.

A 5.7-inch iPhone 6 would offer up a Galaxy Note 3 size display, which anecdotal conversations with iPhone and Android owners show a demand for. If Apple is planning an iPhone 6 with a 5.7-inch display option, the company clearly sees a demand in this area. A device of this size would allow for a better movie and gaming experience as well as a bigger canvas for productivity. We already see iOS 7 changing to offer a better user experience on a larger screen.

iPad mini 2 with Retina Display

The iPad mini 2 release is also on for this year according to the report, countering an analyst report that Apple will save the iPad mini 2 for 2014.

The iPad mini 2 release date, complete with a Retina Display could arrive in 2013 as Apple pushes to compete with the new Nexus 7.

Apple is likely preparing an iPad mini 2 release for 2013 to take on the Nexus 7 and other high-resolution competitors.

Leaks, rumors and analysts are divided on the iPad mini 2 release time and whether it will come with a Retina Display. Hsieh wavered on the timing of the iPad mini 2 and if it would include a Retina Display, but in this report he points specifically to the holiday season for an iPad mini 2 with Retina.

Given the accuracy in predicting an iPad 3 with Retina three months ahead of the announcement there is considerable stock to place in this report.

iPad 5 and Larger iPad

It’s not surprising to see the iPad 5 on this list for a 2013 release as we expect to see an Apple event this month where the company announces multiple new products. The iPad 5 will reportedly use the same 9.7-inch display with a standard 2048 x 1536 resolution.

The larger iPad makes another appearance after multiple leaks, with a vague 2014 release timeframe from NPD. This new iPad would center around a 12.9-inch display with a 2732 x 2048 resolution display. Earlier reports point to a focus on textbooks and business users.

MacBook Air with Retina, 4k Apple TV and iWatch

After this initial round of new products fall 2014 looks like a busy time for Apple according to this report. After starting a growth in screen sizes and resolutions Hsieh predicts Apple will close out 2014 with a new MacBook Air with Retina Display. The timing on this is simply 2014, so we could see it come earlier in the year, possibly at a WWDC event.

The New MacBook Air would reportedly use a 2304 x 1440 resolution that is low power. There is no talk of the New MacBook Pro models which we could see this month or speculation of a 4k display from Sharp in a 15-inch MacBook Pro with Retina.

This report suggests a MacBook Air with Retina Display is set for 2014.

The 2014 holiday season will reportedly come with a 55-inch and 65-inch Apple TV set with a 4k display. There is no pricing or further information available from this report.

While many expected an iWatch release in 2014, it looks like Apple may have showed a false hand to force Samsung to launch the Galaxy Gear faster. This report suggests the iWatch will arrive in late 2014 with a 1.3 to 1.63-inch flexible AMOLED display and a 320 x 320 resolution.
