iPhone 6 Release Date Rumor: Bad News for Phablet Fans

on

The iPhone 6 release date rumors suggest bad news for fans of large smartphones, and good news for the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 which may arrive with more time to dominate the phablet market.

iPhone 6 release date rumors focus clearly on late September for the 4.7-inch model, with multiple reports pointing to a one week span late in the month. The larger iPhone 6 release date is less concrete, according to leaks and rumors.

A new report suggests a solitary iPhone 6 release date this fall, although with a lot of units to sell, as Apple continues to face issues manufacturing a 5.5.-inch iPhone 6 with a Sapphire display.

The iPhone 6 release date may only include a 4.7-inch model in September according to an analyst report.

Since the first rumor of a larger iPhone 6 with as 5.5-inch display analysts and leaks could not agree on the timing of the device. Early reports claimed a second iPhone 6 release date would bring the larger iPhone to users late in 2014, but in time for the holiday shopping season. In June and July rumors refocused on a shared iPhone 6 release date, or at least one just weeks apart.

The latest report from Ming-Chi Kuo, shared on AppleInsider, shares the analyst’s opinion that the 5.5-inch iPhone 6 release date will not take place at the same time as the 4.7-inch iPhone 6 model, and may not arrive in 2014 at all.

Apple’s primary focus is a 4.7-inch iPhone 6 release this fall, which the note suggests is already facing setbacks due to new in cell touch and color issues with the new curvaceous iPhone 6 body. When it comes to the larger 5.5-inch iPhone 6, Kou warns investors, “These problems will likely be even more complicated with a larger size.”

Two major issues mentioned in the note are touch screen sensitivity near the edges of the screen and Sapphire glass strength to handle Apple’s iPhone drop test.

A great touch screen experience is essential to any modern smartphone, and especially so on a larger iPhone that may borrow Apple’s use of edge sensing tech on the iPad mini and iPad Air to prevent unintended touches.

Sapphire is a strong material that tests show could keep the front of the iPhone 6 scratch-free, but there is some concern that it will not handle drops as well as other options. So far tests in the hands of YouTube personalities show a resilient material. Corning, who makes Gorilla Glass, which is a direct competitor to Sapphire glass, published tests that show Sapphire may break easier than Gorilla Glass. Although these tests are not from an independent source, it may illustrate part of the problem Apple is running up against.

Ultimately the 5.5-inch iPhone 6 release date may shift into 2015, according to Kuo. This is the, “most conservative scenario,” so there is still some hope that the largest iPhone 6 unit will arrive this year to take on the Galaxy Note 4. Kuo places the possible 5.5-inch iPhone 6 release date in mid-November at the earliest, which could mean it arrives just in time for Black Friday 2014 and the buys holiday shopping season.

Samsung’s Galaxy Note 4 release date is rumored for September or October, following a reveal at IFA 2014 in Germany. Apple normally competes with Samsung for the Galaxy S4 and Galaxy S5 size smartphone, but this year rumors suggest Apple will bring bigger competition in the form of a 4.7-inch iPhone 6 and a 5.5-inch iPhone 6. These new iPhone models could help convince users to skip Android in favor of the first big iPhone 6 screen size increase in years.

The iPhone 6 release date is rumored for September 19th with a 4.7-inch display and a 1704 x 960 resolution. The larger 5.5-inch iPhone 6 reportedly shares this resolution and other features like an Apple A8 processor, 1GB RAM and a camera upgrade that could deliver better low light photos.
