iPhone 6 Specs: 10 Exciting Details

Published

on

With an iPhone 6 release date heavily rumored for September, consumers are now focusing in on the device itself. While nothing is confirmed until Samsung takes the stage, iPhone 6 rumors have led to a partial iPhone 6 specs sheet that provides an early glimpse at one of the biggest smartphone launches of the year.

For the last seven months, we’ve seen iPhone 6 rumors swirl around in an attempt to out Apple’s new iPhone ahead of launch. iPhone 6 rumors have touched on the launch date, the iPhone 6 release date and of course, the iPhone 6 specs that will be on board the device when it arrives later on this year. In the past two weeks, iPhone 6 release rumors and iPhone 6 specs have come into focus as Apple works to get its product ready for the fall.

The iPhone 6 launch date is all but confirmed for September 9th. Apple still hasn’t confirmed that date but we should see the company’s usual media invites confirm it at some point in the next few weeks as we fast approach both the iPhone 6 launch and the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 launch on September 3rd. Last year, the company announced the iPhone 5s launch date a day before Samsung announced its Galaxy Note 3.

The iPhone 6 design will look much different than the iPhone 5s based on leaks.

With an iPhone 6 launch slated for early September, it’s pretty clear that at least one Phone 6 release will arrive in September as well. Apple is known for releasing its iPhone just a few weeks after launch and right now, rumors have keyed in on September 19th as a possible iPhone 6 release date. That remains unconfirmed but the spotlight is currently on late September.

As we approach the iPhone 6 release, rumors are starting to piece together the rest of the puzzle. iPhone 6 specs aren’t confirmed but we’ve seen a number of them firm up in the last few weeks. Here, we examine the iPhone 6’s partial spec list and detail what we think are the 10 most exciting iPhone 6 specs to emerge out of the rumor mill in the last seven months.

New Screen Sizes

Whether you like it or not, Apple is poised to push the display size of the iPhone 6 up from the 4-inch mark. We’re liking the move and we’re excited about the screen size bump.

The iPhone 6 is almost certainly going to feature a 4.7-inch display and rumors also point to a larger 5.5-inch “phablet” class display that will take on the likes of the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 and LG G3. Apple still isn’t talking about the iPhone 6 but Thailand’s National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) recently confirmed that two iPhone 6 models are on the way. This disclosure reportedly led to a meeting with Apple which suggests that the information is credible.

iPhone users accustomed to the 3.5-inch and 4-inch iPhone sizes are probably nervous. We’re here to tell you that you shouldn’t be nervous, you should be excited about the change.

Expect a bigger screen on the iPhone 6, but not incredibly big.

Expect a bigger screen on the iPhone 6, but not incredibly big.

Thanks to a series of credible leaks, we know that the 4.7-inch iPhone may not be too much larger than the 4-inch iPhone 5s. This thanks to thinner bezels and design tweaks. This is a feature that iPhone owners have enjoyed for years and one of the reasons why people are nervous about the jump beyond a 4-inch Retina Display.

The 5.5-inch iPhone 6 is going to be bigger, we have no doubt about that, but we’re also excited about having a Galaxy Note sized iPhone option. The larger size is fantastic for gaming, sharing a movie on a road trip, or reading a book.

Improved Resolution

Apple’s iPhone 6 will reportedly deliver a 4.7-inch screen with a 1704 x 960 resolution that delivers 416 pixels-per-inch for sharper, crisper content. It’s also expected to offer the same 16:9 aspect ratio that’s found on the iPhone 5s and the iPhone 5. While it may not be able to top the QHD displays that arrived on some high-end Android phones this year, it would still be an improvement over the current Retina Display.

This improved resolution, combined with the larger screen, has us excited because it should make for bigger and better looking apps and a bigger and better looking iOS 8.

The iPhone 6 release will bring bigger screen competition to Samsung.

As we pointed out yesterday, Apple already made major changes in iOS 7 to make using iOS on a large screen easier with pull down access to the Notification Center and Spotlight, swipe back gesture controls and swipe up to use the Control Center.

Sapphire

The iPhone 5s and iPhone 5 design is fantastic and durable, my iPhone 5 has held up well without a case for two years, but there is always room for improvement. iPhone 6 rumors suggest that we’ll see the company tack on a Sapphire screen or some mix of Sapphire and glass that will deliver a stronger iPhone 6 display.

A8 Processor

Apple’s new A8 64-bit processor has hit the rumor mill several times throughout the year and it appears to be a lock for the new iPhone. Rumors also suggest that the 5.5-inch model could actually be clocker faster than the 4.7-inch iPhone 6 which makes sense given the larger display. We still don’t have any benchmarks but we’re excited nonetheless.

A new Apple A8 processor could help iPhone 6 battery life.

An improved A8 processor, and M8 co-processor, should make the iPhone 6 the company’s faster iPhone ever. Reports suggest that the A8 processor could help to deliver better performance in key areas including battery life. Battery life is one of the keys of success to any smartphone and through the years, Apple has offered fantastic battery life with its iPhone.

A performance boost could also lead to improved gaming, something that the company focused on at WWDC 2014, and even faster multitasking, something that should play an important role on an iPhone with a larger display. While the processor jump could simply be an incremental bump from the A7, we’re still excited about the role it could play.

Better Camera

We’re also expecting the usual upgrade to the iPhone’s rear cameras though rumors are still a bit blurry. iPhone 6 rumors point to a better camera in 2014, but it isn’t clear what Apple plans to do. Rumors currently focus on several upgrade options including:

  • 8MP sensor with bigger pixels
  • 13MP sensor from Sony
  • Optical Image Stabilization or Electronic Image Stabilization (OIS, EIS)

Apple’s new iPhones always show noticeable improvements over their successors so we’re excited about the potential for better looking photos and videos. We’re also excited about these image stabilization rumors.

LG G3 Review from iPhone User - 7

OIS or EIS would help to cut down on the shakiness that often emerges in videos. It’s a spec that’s available on devices like the Nexus 5 and LG G3 and it’s a feature that we could appreciate on the iPhone 6.

Touch ID

The iPhone 6 is widely expected to have a Touch ID fingerprint sensor, a feature that arrived on the iPhone 5s. VentureBeat claims that Apple will introduce improvements that will speed up read times and improve accuracy.

Expect Touch ID on the iPhone 6.

After using the iPhone 5s for a year, and having some ups and downs with Apple’s new fingerprint sensor, we’re excited about a potential upgrade. Even if that upgrade doesn’t arrive, the presence of Apple’s Touch ID is exciting because of the extra convenience and security that it provides.

iOS 8

The iPhone 6 will almost certainly come with Apple’s brand new iOS 8 software. That in of itself is exciting because as we’ve pointed out, iOS 8 is a significant upgrade over iOS 7. Yes, it looks a lot like iOS 7 but there are some likeable features on board. To get a feel for the new iOS 8 update, we suggest taking a look at our iOS 8 vs iOS 7 walkthrough. It will bring you up to speed on the many changes Apple’s made to its operating system.

New iPhones also tend to not only get the entire iOS feature set but they often get unique software features. Last year’s iPhone 5s for instance got some camera-related software features that did not arrive for the iPhone 5 or any other device. We could certainly see the same from the iPhone 6 as Apple attempts to separate it from the pack.

Faster Wi-Fi

VentureBeat claims that the iPhone 6 will finally deliver the 802.11ac WiFi that emerged for Apple’s MacBook line many months ago. Its claim has been backed up with evidence which includes a purported iPhone 6 logic board that shows support for the fast 802.11ac Wi-Fi standard.

802.11ac is a networking standard for wireless devices like smartphones and laptops. Apple claims that the feature enables internet speeds that are three times faster, something that could come in clutch on a data-driven device like the iPhone 6.

NFC

Near-Field Communication, or NFC, has been on board Android smartphones for many years now. It has not, however, made its way to the iPhone. We’ve heard rumors about NFC in the past so we’re not exactly confident but that doesn’t mean that we’re not excited about the prospects.

Google is already a major player in mobile payments.

Google is already a major player in mobile payments.

iPhone 6 rumors point to NFC support and mobile payments, something that would allow users to turn their iPhone into a mobile wallet to pay for goods and services where NFC is located. It’s a feature that we’ve used with Android phones and tablets for years and it’s a feature that we’ve wanted to see with the iPhone 6. We’re hopeful that this year is the year.

Bigger Battery

Finally, we’re excited about improvements to battery life. Recent reports indicate Apple is working with a new partner who is working to deliver better iPhone battery life with new processors. The biggest gains in battery life may not arrive for the iPhone 6, but here’s what iPhone 6 processor rumors tell us.

  • Apple A8 Processor 2GHz Dual Core
  • Possibility for Apple M8 co-processor for fitness tracking
  • 1GB of RAM according to Ming-Chi Kuo

Reports also indicate that Apple plans to boost the iPhone 6 batter size up to 20% from the iPhone 5s. This is an important bump due to the larger screen. Here’s what we’ve heard so far.

  • 4.7-inch iPhone 6 battery – 1,800 – 1900 mAh
  • 5.5-inch iPhone 6 battery  – 2,500 mAh

Early reports pointed to the iPhone 6 battery specs listed above, which is a 14-20% boost from the iPhone 5s to the iPhone 6 with a 4.7-inch display. Combined with the processor and tweaks found in iOS 8 and we could potentially see the best iPhone battery life we’ve ever seen. It’s something that we, and you, should be excited about.

Uh, you obviously have no clue what RAM is. The 32GB and 128GB you refer to regarding your HTC is it’s storage capacity, not it’s RAM.

Apple should be embarrassed with these technical specs. Steve Jobs dies and so does the Apple standard, its the unfortunate truth. Theres not a flagship Droid phone on the market today that isn’t miles ahead of this phone as far as technology goes. IPhone 6 = RIPOFF
