iPhone 6c Release Date to Miss iPhone 6s Event

Published

on

The iPhone 6s event is set for September 9, but it’s rumored that the accompanying iPhone 6c won’t make an appearance at that event.

The iPhone 6c has gone through the rumor mill aggressively over the last few months, with reports saying that the device would keep the same 4-inch display and polycarbonate outer shell as the iPhone 5c in order to keep costs down.

However, the release date of the newer budget device was something that has been a bit up in the air at this point, with past reports claiming a September release, while newer reports have suggested a later release date into October and even November.

During Apple’s iPhone 6s event on September 9, the company is expected to announce the iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus, the Apple TV 4, and possibly new iPads, although that will likely wait until October, which is when Apple usually hosts a separate iPad event.

However, the iPhone 6c will likely be a no-show during the iPhone 6s event even though it’s expected to release this year at some point. According to 9to5Mac, Apple has been working on a 4-inch iPhone 6c that will perform comparably to the iPhone 6, but sources say that the new device isn’t quite ready for primetime yet.

The iPhone 6c is expected to come with Apple’s A8 processor, which is the same processor that’s in the iPhone 6. The new budget device is also rumored to come with Touch ID and NFC capabilities, allowing it to utilize Apple Pay, which is the company’s new mobile payment platform that let’s you buy goods at the store using your iPhone or paying for stuff in-app using Touch ID to authorize payments.

On top of a release of the iPhone 6c at some point this year, 9to5Mac also notes that the iPhone 5c will be discontinued once the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus release, moving the iPhone 6 into the mid-tier range, and the iPhone 5s into the budget tier, although it’s unknown where the iPhone 6c will fit in and how it will fit in. When the iPhone 5c released, the iPhone 5 was immediately discontinued, meaning that the iPhone 6 should technically do the same, but since the iPhone 6c isn’t releasing right away, it’ll be interesting to see how Apple stacks up its iPhone lineup into the holiday season.

The discontinuation of the iPhone 5c isn’t too surprising, as it’s been reported in the past that sales of the budget device were fairly poor compared to the iPhone 5s, which released at the same time. Even though the iPhone 5c was half the cost of the iPhone 5s after signing a new contract, many consumers still went for the latest and greatest at the time.

The iPhone 6s will see a few improvements and new features over the iPhone 6, although the new device will sport the same overall design and look as the iPhone 6. Otherwise, the iPhone 6s is said to receive a Force Touch display, a faster processor, a more efficient cellular chip, and a better camera module, with rumors pointing to a 12-megapixel camera that will be able to record 4K video.

The iPhone 6s will also launch with iOS 9, and it’s likely that the release of iOS 9 will arrive a few days before the iPhone 6s is released, allowing users to download and install the new version of iOS before the new iPhones are released.

iOS 9 will keep the same overall look and feel as iOS 8, but will come with a handful of new features. Siri will be faster and more accurate than ever before, and Spotlight Search will get some improvements. There’s also better privacy settings, more support overall for Apple Pay with credit cards and store loyalty cards, and the biggest new feature is the addition of transit directions in Apple Maps.
