iPhone 6c Rumors Heating Up Yet Again

Published

on

The iPhone 6c is said to launch alongside the upcoming iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus, and iPhone 6c rumors keep heating up as we get closer and closer to the release of the budget device.

With the rumors that we do know so far about the iPhone 6c, it’s said to sport the same 4-inch display as the iPhone 5c and come with a polycarbonate outer shell just like its predecessor. It’s unclear why Apple is planning to stick with a 4-inch screen on the iPhone 6c, but it’s possible that the company still wants to market the users that prefer a smaller display.

While the iPhone 6c could look fairly similar to the iPhone 5c, the insides are rumored to get a pretty big overhaul.

According to Patently Apple, the iPhone 6c will sport an Apple A8 processor (instead of the A6 that’s inside of the iPhone 5c). Furthermore, the iPhone 6c will come with NFC and a Touch ID home button, meaning that users will be able to take advantage of Apple Pay on the budget device.

Apple Pay allows users to buy goods at the store using their iPhone at the checkout terminal instead of using a credit or debit card. The service allows you to add cards to your Apple Pay and then pay using those cards through Apple’s payment service. It’s perhaps a safer form of payment since you’re not giving your credit card details to the store.

As for the release date of the iPhone 6c, previous rumors reported that we’d most likely see it released alongside the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus next month, which would make sense, but a newer report suggests otherwise, saying that the budget smartphone will release in November instead.

We’d take that rumor with a grain of salt, as it would be weird for Apple to do such a thing, but the company has been known to shake things up a bit when it comes to their release timelines. Overall, though, Apple is a creature of habit, and their release cycles are pretty spot on every year.

Even if the iPhone 6c didn’t arrive until November, it’s still fairly likely that Apple will announce the new smartphone next month during its iPhone 6s event.

The iPhone 5c was Apple’s first dive into the budget iPhone market and launched the device in 2013 alongside the release of the iPhone 5s. The iPhone 5c served as the replacement for the iPhone 5, so it’s likely that the iPhone 6c will be a replacement for the iPhone 6.

However, it’s important to note that the iPhone 5c didn’t sell quite as well as its bigger brother, the iPhone 5s, but the iPhone 5c was at least an alternative that frugal shoppers could consider when buying a new smartphone.

Since then, it’s been unclear if Apple would bring back a newer iPhone 5c at some point. The iPhone 6c was rumored to release last year alongside the iPhone 6, but that ended up being wrong, obviously. However, it makes sense for Apple to release it this year alongside the iPhone 6s, since Apple released the iPhone 5c alongside the iPhone 5s when it came out.

As for price, the iPhone 6c will most definitely be a bit cheaper than the iPhone 6s — possibly $100 cheaper if Apple follows the same pattern as before. The iPhone 6s will likely start at $650 and the iPhone 6c will start at $550, allowing buyers to save a bit of cash if they still want an iPhone experience. However, it’ll be interesting to see how Apple markets the price of these new iPhones, now that Verizon, T-Mobile, and Sprint are heading away from two-year contract plans.

I continue to be mystified at the continued reference to the iPhone 5c as a “budget device.” It is less expensive than Apple’s other phones, but it’s hardly cheap. Low-cost phones are not a playground in which Apple plays, anyway.
