iPhone 6s vs. iPhone 6: Everything We Know Right Now

Published

on

With an Apple media event set for September 9th, we take a look at everything we know right now about the iPhone 6s vs. iPhone 6 matchup.

If you’re in the hunt for a new iPhone, you’ve probably heard about the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, Apple’s current flagships. The devices and their large screens arrived last September and they remain two top smartphone options.

You’ve also probably heard that Apple has two new iPhones up its sleeve. iPhone 6s rumors point to the arrival of an iPhone 6s and an iPhone 6s Plus. The company reportedly won’t launch a smaller 4-inch iPhone 6c in September.

iPhone-6s-5

iPhone 6s rumors have gotten specific in the last few weeks and they’ve outed several key details ahead of Apple’s big announcement. With prospective iPhone 6 and iPhone 6s buyers in mind, we take a look at everything you need to know ahead of Apple’s big day next week.

iPhone 6s Live Stream

If you’re thinking about buying the iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone 6s, or iPhone 6s Plus, you should block your schedule for about two hours the morning of September 9th.

Apple’s confirmed a launch event in San Francisco for the 9th and it’s there that we expect the company to announce the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus, among other things.

The 2015 Apple Event is official, and we expect to see the iPhone 6s and more at this time and date.

The 2015 Apple Event is official, and we expect to see the iPhone 6s and more at this time and date.

Per usual, the company will be hosting a live stream of the event so that those not in attendance at the Bill Graham Auditorium can take in the action live.

We expect the iPhone 6s launch event to include several key announcements including changes to the iPhone lineup, the iOS 9 release date, iPhone 6s specs and features, and the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus release date.

The event starts at 10AM PST so plan accordingly.

iPhone 6s Release Date

Apple didn’t take pre-orders for its last iPhone “S” model, the iPhone 5s, but that may not be the case with this year’s iPhone.

iPhone 6s pre-orders will reportedly begin on September 11th in some countries ahead of an iPhone 6s release date on September 18th.

We expect September 18th to include the United States and all of its major carriers but smaller U.S. carriers and other regions might have to wait a few days or even a few weeks for the new iPhone.

iPhone 6s vs. iPhone 6 Design

Apple’s not expected to have a redesigned iPhone 7 up its sleeve for 2015. Instead, it looks like the iPhone 6s design will build on the foundation that Apple built with last year’s iPhone 6 design. Over the past few weeks, we’ve seen five key iPhone 6s design details emerge.

iPhone 6s Specs - Stronger

Rose Gold iPhone 6s

The iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus come in grey, silver, and gold. The iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus will reportedly come in grey, silver, gold, and rose gold.

This new rose gold color could look like the pinkish rose gold Apple Watch that arrived on shelves earlier this year. Just don’t expect it to be made out of 18k gold though.

Dimensions

Sources have told Gotta Be Mobile that the iPhone 6s design will be slightly thicker than the iPhone 6 design. We’ve been told that the new iPhone should still work with iPhone 6 cases.

The difference will apparently be measured in millimeters so the change probably won’t be noticeable to the naked eye.

Stronger iPhone 6s Design

According to leaks, the iPhone 6s back will be made from a new 7000 series aluminum. This is the same material that Apple uses with the Apple Watch Sport. This change should help prevent the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus from bending.

Sizes

The iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus will reportedly match the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6s Plus in size. iPhone 6s rumors have continuously pointed to 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch models and at this point, this is what to expect.

Without a dramatic shift in screen size, buyers can expect the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus overall size to be about the same as the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus.

No Sapphire Display

And finally, it’s worth noting that Apple probably won’t be installing sapphire glass displays on the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus. Instead, it’s expected to stick with the Ion-X glass that is on the current iPhone 6 models.

iPhone 6s vs. iPhone 6 Specs

Apple’s rumored to have a series of upgrades planned for this years models and thanks to iPhone 6s rumors, we have some leads on what those changes might be.

Analysts believe that the iPhone 6s will be a significant upgrade from last year’s iPhone 6 and the company is expected to focus on several key areas including camera, performance, and software.

That said, the two devices could share a few things in common. Here’s how the iPhone 6s vs. iPhone 6 spec battle is shaping up ahead of September 9th.

iPhone 6s Specs - Displays

Display

While the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6s are expected to share screen sizes, the iPhone 6s display is rumored to have one key difference.

Numerous reports suggest that Apple will include its Force Touch technology on the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus. Force Touch is currently found on the new MacBook and Apple Watch but it’s not available on any of Apple’s iPhones.

Force Touch would allow for the iPhone 6s to detect a harder press on the screen. In turn, this gesture could open up a new set of controls and shortcuts that simply aren’t available on the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus.

Cameras

The iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus boast a solid 8MP rear camera and a serviceable 1.2MP FaceTime camera. iPhone 6s rumors continue to suggest that Apple will install new cameras on the new iPhones and they will be one of the biggest selling points.

The iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus will reportedly come with a 12MP rear camera that can shoot 4K video quality.

As for the FaceTime camera, it’s expected to come with an improved sensor and a front-facing flash. The flash would allow iPhone 6s users to take better looking selfies in low light environments.

Processor

Apple will reportedly replace the iPhone 6’s A8 chip with a brand new A9 processor. The A9 processor is expected to deliver significant performance improvements in key areas like battery life and speed.

On top of that, reports indicate that the iPhone 6s will come with a new Qualcomm chip that will help the two devices deliver better battery life and faster LTE data speeds.

Storage

Consumers have been pleading for a 32GB base iPhone but it doesn’t look like Apple will deliver this year. Instead, the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus will reportedly start at 16GB.

iPhone buyers can also expect Apple to deliver a 64GB iPhone 6s/iPhone 6s Plus and a 128GB iPhone 6s/iPhone 6s Plus.

iOS 9

The iPhone 6 will be getting the iOS 9 update and it will come with some significant upgrades including an hour long boost to battery life.

iOS-9-Beta-5

The iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus will also run iOS 9 though their iOS 9 software will reportedly differ from the software on board the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus.

Apple’s iOS 9 update will likely tie-in with the Force Touch technology that’s featured on the display. We’ve heard that the iOS 9 keyboard will play a role though it could run much deeper than that.

iPhone 6s vs. iPhone 6 Price

The iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus will reportedly take over the current iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus price points. No surprise there.

The iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus apparently won’t get the ax and will instead drop by $100 on-contract. The iPhone 5s is expected to take over for the iPhone 5c at the free-on-contract price point. Apple will discontinue the iPhone 5c.

iOS 9 Release Date: 12 Things to Get Excited About

iOS 9 Release Date is Close

iOS 9 Release Date is Close

The first thing to get excited about is the iOS 9 release date.

With Apple choosing not to release a new beta two weeks after the iOS 9 beta 5 release and a media event slated for September 9th, it looks like the public iOS 9 release date is close.

We still don't have an exact date but Apple should announce one next week. With an iPhone 6s release date heavily rumored for September 18th, it's looking like September 16th will be the iOS 9 release date for all iPhones, iPads and iPod touches. Circle it on the calendar.
