High Gas Prices Drive Consumers to iPhone Apps for Cheap Gas

Published

on

The cost of gas spiked up 20 cents per gallon in California, and throughout the U.S. gas prices are up, pushing consumers to find cheaper gas with iPhone apps.

In California, AAA’s Daily Fuel Report reports the average price of gas is $4.49, and the U.S. average price for a gallon of regular is $3.79. Price hikes are also hitting the midwest with some stations reporting a gallon of gas for $3.89 with the potential to spike 14 cents per gallon by the end of the day in Michigan, Ohio, Kentucky, Indiana, Illinois and West Virginia.

As prices soar, so does the demand for apps to find cheaper gas. One of the most popular iPhone apps for finding cheap gas climbed over 100 spots in the Top Free iPhone Apps rankings.

Gas Prices Spike

Gas prices rise overnight as consumers look for apps to find cheaper gas.

GasBuddy is a free app that helps users find cheap gas prices at nearby gas stations. The app is available on iPhone, iPad and Android. GasBuddy collects gas prices at stations across the country thanks to a network of volunteers who spot gas price changes and report changes so others can find cheap gas.

iPhone Gas Price App

Demand for apps to find cheap gas on the iPhone increases.

Gas Buddy climbed to the #65 free app in the iPhone App Store today, up over 100 spots from the start of the week as consumers look for ways to find cheaper gas.

The app lets users report gas prices at local stations and find the cheapest gas without driving around town. After finding a local station with cheap gas, users can tap to get directions to the station. This opens Google Maps directions in the safari browser. Users could also ask Siri to find directions to the gas station.

Unfortunately, Apple’s personal assistant cannot track down cheap gas, telling iPhone users the service cannot search based on price range. Hopefully someday soon Siri can help users find cheap gas, by tapping into GasBuddy or a similar service.

Shouldn’t this head line refer to “Smart Phone Apps”?

You refer to Gas Buddy, that is also available for Android, Blackberry, Windows Phone and online.

I do not think you mean to imply IPhone only, but that is what eh headine says.

(Unless you are usinf iPhone as a gerneric term for smartphone.)
