iPod Touch Owners Get VoIP With TruPhone

Published

on

truephone iPod Touch owners can do some phone calling after all thanks to TruPhone. TruPhone is a popular VoIP solution for other mobile platforms that is now available for the 2nd Generation iPod Touch. It will allow users to communicate TruPhone to TruPhone or via GTalk and other VoIP networks. You won’t be able to dial other non-VoIP phone numbers and are limited to VoIP connections, but hey, that’s better than nothing I’m guessing. Of course you need a WiFi connection to make this work.

The app is now available in the App Store for free. The question is will we see other VoIP clients make an appearance.

This is really interesting, although I had no idea my Touch had any microphone-like functionality. I am fairly sure there’s no external mic, so wonder what kind of headset is needed to use this. Time to do some research!

You have to have a 2nd Gen Touch, there is no Mic in 1st Gen although there are some mods.

As you say there is no external mic on the 2nd Gen either however you can just use a normal iPhone headset from the Apple site.

I have no experience of Truphone but use Fring instead which allows Skype calls and also true VOIP as well (although I have not tried to use this functionality on the Touch). Fring also works with all the popular IM’s for texting.

GeoffreyM: Apple just released a new headset for the current gen iPods that includes a microphone and iPod controls. Should work for this. Pretty sure I’ve also seen a mic attachment for the dock connector.

@ Gordon & Sumocat: Thanks for the information. My Gen 1 is out then.

GeoffreyM: For the 3.5mm connection, yes, you’re out of luck, but a dock connector microphone could work. No guarantees though.
