Is Your Google Nexus 7 Defective?

Published

on

Those who have been lucky enough to receive their Google Nexus 7 tablet have begun to take notice of defects that are affecting the new Android 4.1 Jelly Bean tablet.

A poll over at XDA-forums indicating that more than a few users have been seeing issues with their new 7-inch slate, which just started shipping out last week.

Many users are seeing glass separation issues where the Nexus 7’s glass is separating from the case. For some owners, the screen has somehow manged to rise above the border. An example of this, from XDA-forums user Lazaro17, shows the screen of the Nexus 7 rising above the border.

Nexus 7 owners are seeing issues with their new tablet.

Other users have noticed that the display on the Nexus 7 has arrived with dead pixels on board.

These are two of the more well-known defects that Nexus 7 owners are seeing come with the device. Many users who are affected by the issues say that they are going to be exchanging their device. Problem is, supply is low at the moment with many retailers sold out and Google’s shipping times for the 16GB model sitting at 3-4 weeks.

Shipping times at the Google Play Store for the 8GB model eased to 3-5 days yesterday.

Many retailers are still unsure when their stock will be replenished. Gamestop says that it will receive more Nexus 7 devices in August and Staples is expecting to have devices in stock shortly. Office Depot doesn’t know when it will get more and Sam’s Club might just be the only place that might have it in-stores.

From a poll at XDA-forums, it looks like most users with issues received their Nexus 7 from Google itself which may bode well for a replacement.

Anyone else out there seeing defects on their Nexus 7? We’d love to hear from you.

Mine too! I was wondering how to go about returning it. I sent an email, but got no response. Today I tried calling Google Play twice. Both times I was on hold for over 30 minutes before I finally gave up.

        Same here,
both my friend & I had the same issue, although his is far more lifted than mine. No reply from google yet, very poor customer service.

You MUST stick through it. That’s the only way you’ll get through. Watch a movie while you wait.

Yup, had the screen lifting issue. Returned 2 devices in the past 2 days which were purchased in a retail store. I believe this is going to be a huge problem for Google and Asus.

I’m not sure if it is the same as the dead pixel problem referenced, but I have a column of pixels on the left side of the screen that seems to show the color from some other column of pixels on the screen. It’s not necessarily noticeable when looking at a screen with mostly solid color, but is visible when the screen has more variation. Part of the column is always noticeable though when using the on-screen system keyboard (i.e. light grey/green line running through the dark grey button color).

I had been trying to get through on the phone as well. I am on the East Coast and tried calling in the morning and in the afternoon. Both times I waited over 30 minutes before hanging up. Then, I called again at like 8:00 pm — this time I only had to wait 10 minutes before somebody answered. They were SUPER helpful and are sending me a new one with included return postage, so I don’t have to ship my old one back until I have received a replacement. Not bad, though I wish the original one hadn’t been defective.

Who did you contact? ASUS or Google? ASUS wants me to send mine back to see if it can be “fixed”

l thought the china tablet I send back had issues, looks like quality issues are more widespread, everyone is putting android into all sorts of devices and use google to sell their product and use the cheapest hardware they can get their hands on to make a profit. This includes google them selfs. Worst is their customer support is amongst the worst out there. Even the china retailer have live web chat for support that works, I have tried to get google to answer support tickets or talk to them with their call back server (wait in line for nothing) number to no aval.

If you want a google tablet make sure you get it from a retailer that will replace/refund if the item is of inferior quality. Or get the fruit, it will cost but it will work.

I’m seriously NOT impressed with my Nexus 7.

I opened the box (eventually – it’s a bit snug) last night, turned it on, connected to WiFi, signed into Google Play, it whizzed away and downloaded my apps and did a software update. I had a quick try of Google Voice, turned it off, turned it on again and NOTHING !!! It won’t even turn on now. I’ve long pressed it, short pressed it, pressed all combinations of start up keys and all I get now is a white Google logo followed by 10 seconds of black screen and a large multi-coloured ‘X’ in the middle of the screen.

It’s going back to the store today – I can’t even get a replacement because they are out of stock.

    Humph

Biggest problem here was getting the box open. No problems after two days plus one day with 4 teenage grandkids. They all gave it a positive review.

I bought mine at Staples. I went there for copy paper and there they were! I snagged one up quickly and get my order from the play store, which I’m glad I did because I just read Google is stopping the same of the 16gb for now. The one from the play store will be here Tuesday. The one from staples is perfect, it doesn’t have any of the judges being reported here. The only thing I’m not crazy about is some colors look muted….but the colors in the play store are so vibrant where the colors on some websites like eBay look washed out. Also some pictures look stretched out and fuzzy, . Other than that I love it! I have a question for those with the glass lifting issue…..did this happen in the days after using it or was the glass lifted right when you took it out of the box? I’m wondering if the glue is loosening or if it was like that when Google packaged it up and sent it off. Thanks.

Unfortunately mine was lifting right out of the box. I am still trying to fix it though. So far I have managed to stop the creaking noise which turned out to be a completely different issue related to that black tape inside the device. I really hope that I can solve the lifting with some glue. Unfortunately though I still can’t pinpoint the problem exactly. Come on DIY’ers, lets fix this! I can only imagine how slow it would be to get an RMA done. If I can’t solve it by the end of tommorow I’m gonna have to call support and get a replacement on order.

My Nexus seemed just great, everything worked just great. I turned it off & plugged it in to the charger. The following morning, I pressed the on/off bottom and nothing happened. I tried pressing it different ways, but nothing. I tried attaching the charger, nothing. Since I bought it at Walmart, I called & was told to come get a replacement. While checking it, a guy there got it to turn on by depressing the upper edge of the button. He talked me into keeping it. I used it For most of the day off/on without issues. Then I shut it off and it wouldn’t turn on no matter what I did, so I googled the issue w/my computer. Press in for 45 seconds…so I did that. It worked, but that is supposed to mean there is an issue. Back to the store for replacement!

To follow up on my Nexus issues… After depressing the on/off button for (45) seconds, as I wrote, it was working, and would then turn on/off. Last night, I turned it off, plugged it in to the charger. This morning, the same thing! It will not turn on. Depressing the button for (45) seconds is supposed to do a reset. It shouldn’t be necessary this soon after getting the Nexus, and certainly not on an ongoing basis. My sister’s family has (4) Nexus7’s, all 16mb, like mine. None of them are having issues with lifted screens, bad speakers,or any software malfunctions. I am returning my Nexus this morning, hoping to get one without any of the other issues you all have been writing about!

Lori … I bought mine last week and have the on/off button issue too! I’m glad you wrote about it. I’m not putting up with this either. Otherwise have been really liking it.

I’m having “touch screen” issues. When using it to read, I will “swipe” to turn the page. NO response. Also, website such as Netflix opens, and the box to enter your name/email is showing, I tap on it to get the key board to come up….so I can enter my data. NO response.

I usinga 16GB version with updated to JBean

Judy, sorry to hear you also had the same issue, but glad you posted, too. Your welcome, as I felt my issue should be also brought up to alert others. The guy who helped me at Walmart was the same one who told me to keep it, insisting it was just a touchy button… I had a copy of my receipt (probably won’t happen to any one else, but just in case…) with me, and was handed a replacement. However, at original purchase (a friend of mine bought it for me), a 3 yr warranty was purchased. Tomorrow, I am calling to speak to a Manager at Walmart to inquire about the warranty being transferred to this one. If the 1st Nexus7 was scanned to the receipt and another one not also scanned, I doubt my warranty would be honored (!). On that replacement, it has worked into its second day in a far superior way all across the board, turns on/off easily, has a very sensitive screen, no sign of any of the other issues, and I am enjoying using it! For any who have issues within the first couple of days, contact the store! Most have return policies. Walmart has it for (15) days.

My Google Nexus 7 tablet has suddenly developed problems with the display. The screen display while boot has turned “gray” instead of “black” and there is a constant flicker with a “whitish-mask” type color on screen. Moreover, the screen leaves an impression of the old screen e.g. if I unlock the device, on the home screen it still shows the clock impression in the background or if I open Gmail and switch to some other application, I still see the Gmail app screen in the new screen as well.

I have sent email to Google Support, awaiting their reply.
