Kindle Fire Burns Android Tablet Pricing to the Ground

Published

on

When Amazon announced the Kindle Fire tablet yesterday, it set the new bar for Android tablet prices. You see, Amazon’s tablet is going to be $199 without a contract effectively making the current slew of expensive Android tablets an ugly sight to consumers. So, how to make them more attractive?

By lowering the price of course and that notion has apparently started today with Woot’s inexpensive offer for the Motorola Xoom and the rumored price drop of the HTC Flyer tablet.

Woot currently has the 32GB Wi-Fi only Motorola Xoom available for $350. Not a bad offer at all. As for the HTC Flyer, Phone Arena is reporting that it will likely be seeing a price cut at Best Buy taking the Wi-Fi version down to $300 which would be a $200 price drop from its usual $500. Barnes and Noble is also taking $25 off the Nook Color.

Motorola Xoom

Yes folks, the race for the bottom has officially begun.

And while these are the first significant price cuts for Android tablets, they certainly will not be the last in the build-up to Amazon’s Kindle Fire launch in November.

So, if you’ve been thinking about picking up a Honeycomb tablet, you might want to wait a few weeks to see how low the prices on Android Wi-Fi tablets get.

You’ll probably be surprised.

I am glad that the world has the antiApple. Amazon is such a great company.

I don’t think consumers are as unaware as that.
This will no doubt be super successful and compete massively in the niche the Nook Color verified exists.
But this tablet lacks – GPS, bluetooth, cameras, a microphone, any way to get video out off the device onto an external one practically speaking.  My understanding is that the USB does support Host but I haven’t confirmed that from other sources.  If true then you could at least get an external keyboard hooked up if you needed/wanted to.
But still, that means no maps, no voice search, no skype or similar.
It is not a competitor to the ipad or other full use general tablets.
It will sell well and no doubt its very existence will take sales from them.
But then that is true of toyota corolla class cars as compared to pickup trucks too.

As for Woot – I am pretty sure they didn’t set up their deal on 24 hour notice due to kindle fire coming out.
Price reductions on the various tablets that aren’t selling well and have been out a while were to be expected no matter what amazon did.

Hopefully this drives prices down even more. All of the crap getting shoved into these tablets is stupid anyway.

GPS with navigation – Got it on my phone.
Camera – Got it on my phone.
Camcorder – Got it on my phone.

Why would I want inferior versions of these same things jacking up the cost of my tablet?

I just wish that Amazon had been able to source a quality 8in tablet. 7 is still a little too small (That’s what she said).

Listen here Mr bone: Getting navigation directions on a 8 to 10″ tablet is much easier to view. / Camera, well I really don’t care if it has one or not, except for video calls maybe. / Camcorder: your right on this one, A phone or my Zi8 does a better job. / But a tablet is so much more than a phone. I use mine for work and play. Needing to upload pic’s on the job site I use a toshiba Thrive and love it.  Tons of ports to plug in everything even a toaster.  Well maybe not a toaster but you get my drift.  Listen Carry a phone and slip a tablet into your day pouch and your set for the day. P/S: Thoughts from a 60 year old Techno-geek… (Maybe I need a 20″ tablet)

You should be able to get your 8 to 10 in tablet with all the bells and whistles that I think are stupid and I should be able to get a cheaper, quality tablet that doesn’t have all that crap. I’m annoyed with all of them throwing every stupid bulletpoint item in the tablet to justify charging a dillion bucks MSRP with the apparent end game strategy being for them to sit on shelves and get dusty (or not come out at all).

If you could link/push/mirror phone to tablet or even network phone to tablet the point is moot. Everyone wins. Except for the 3 cavemen that don’t have advanced cell phones, but screw them.

This is the price this stuff should have started out at.  If you are not Apple, you can’t sell at the same price as Apple.  Just look at the high-end notebook market.
