LaCie Adds Whopping 1 TB of Storage to iPad, iPhone

With Apple’s iPhone topping out at 64 GB and iPad capped off at 128 GB, sometimes that may not be enough to store all your photos, videos, music, and movies. And given that Apple doesn’t offer expandable storage on these devices, users cannot switch out a memory card and instead must rely on cloud storage, which of course requires connectivity to the Internet. However, now thanks to LaCie, users can now augment the storage on their iOS devices with a new portable media drive called the LaCie Fuel.

The LaCie Fuel is a streaming wireless hard drive that allows you to store files, documents, and media content locally on the drive, and then stream it to your iPad or iPhone when you need access. It’s similar to cloud storage, but you store and keep the files locally so you won’t need to buy cloud storage space, which could get costly at 1 TB total, or have to maintain an active Internet connection to have access to those files.

The drive will also work with Mac computers as well, and 1 TB would be good enough for 500 movies, 160,000 songs, or 190,000 photos according to the company. It connects over WiFi, and users can connect up to 5 devices to the LaCie. The LaCie is essentially like a portable hotspot, but rather than directly connecting to the Internet, it connects your devices to your files.

LaCie says that the Fuel will be available soon and it would be available for $199.

The LaCie Fuel also connects with Dropbox. With Dropbox sync, if you upload local files to Dropbox, the LaCie Fuel would update automatically. A native USB 3.0 port would also allow for faster data transfer between the drive and a Mac.

The LaCie Fuel would also compete in a similar space with the Kingston MobileLite, though the latter works by allowing you to take your own storage devices wirelessly by allowing users to plug in a storage card or a USB flash drive to the MobileLite whereas the LaCie Fuel comes with its embedded 1 TB HDD.

I love DropBox and have used it for years both personally and in a business environment. The biggest challenge that they face is they provide a service that is easily replicated by any number of companies, including powerful ones like Google , Amazon and Microsoft. The services are a dime a dozen right now and they way I see it, there are two things that can set a company apart: 1) tight integration with multiple platforms and 2) lots of storage space. Dropbox is doing a great job on the integration front. It couldn’t be much easier to use, whether on a Mac, PC, or cellphone. But right now, they are getting pressure on the storage space issue. I keep getting emails that Norton wants to give me 50GB and Google wants to give me 100 MB. So right now I am making the switch to a product by Barracuda called Copy. They start you out with 20GB of space (more than I have on DropBox after years) and with referrals of 5GB a pop it can go quickly from there. Check it out at https://copy.com?r=BlX7tm.
