Lack of Nexus S 4G Android 4.1 Jelly Bean Update Bad Sign for Verizon Galaxy Nexus

Published

Last week, Google started to roll out the Nexus S Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update to devices on carriers around the world. One of the most glaring omissions is the Nexus S 4G, a version of the Nexus S on Sprint. And unfortunately, the lack of an update for the Nexus S 4G, a week after the roll out for the Nexus S, is a bad sign for both the Verizon Galaxy Nexus and the Sprint Galaxy Nexus.

The Nexus S Android 4.1 Jelly Bean roll out has hit a multitude of carriers around the globe. The list includes T-Mobile, H3G, O2, Rogers and Vodafone. Google says that its rolling the update out to devices on those carriers in most countries.

Absent from the list is the Nexus S 4G from Sprint which still does not have any sort of release date and may not get one for a while if everything plays out as it has in the past.

The Nexus S 4G is behind other Nexus S’ to Android 4.1 Jelly Bean.

American carriers, as we’ve pointed out many times, are always last to get Android updates out to their users. Often times, an update will roll out several months before the update hits the American version of a device. Case in point, the Samsung Galaxy Note.

While this doesn’t necessarily confirm the Nexus S 4G will be the last Nexus S to Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, it definitely makes it a likely scenario.

And sadly, this again opens up the possibility of the American carriers being last to the Samsung Galaxy Nexus Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update as well, something that we’ve talked about ever since Google announced that all Galaxy Nexus devices would be apart of the first batch of phones that would receive Android 4.1 Jelly Bean.

It’s becoming increasingly clear that American carriers are still lagging behind the rest of the world when it comes to pushing out Android upgrades and the lack of a Nexus S 4G update and any information about it is evidence of this.

While we can’t confirm anything, we assume that this is how the Galaxy Nexus Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update is going to play out, something that will only stand to frustrate owners even more than they already are.

Remember, it took Verizon five months to update the Galaxy Nexus with an update.

Vodafone Australia, for instance, has been very forthright with owners of the Galaxy Nexus on their network. Last week, they let customers know that they hadn’t yet received the update from Google for testing purposes.

Sprint and Verizon offered their Galaxy Nexus users a huge cup of silence at a time when Verizon needs to be smoothing things over with owners, in an attempt to put the Nexus back in Samsung Galaxy Nexus.

Sadly though, it seems that American carriers are up to their same old tricks with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean and that could lead to longer than expected wait times for those that own the Galaxy Nexus on Verizon and Sprint.

How long before you think we see updates for the Galaxy Nexus’ and the Nexus S 4G?

The article repeated the same information about 5 times. Poor.

The article also specifically states that CDMA Nexus devices are left out in the cold.

Bill, the Engadget article does not indicate that the factory images are available for CDMA devices, though.

Well… I’m using a Verizon Galaxy Nexus, that’s running Android 4.1.1 [Jelly Bean] with free native tethering. The options for Nexus Devices are phenomenal.

I gave up on carriers a Looonng time ago. By waiting for any carrier to release open source software is silly to say the least. These phones are developers phones. Why wait for a crippled, unrooted, stock phone?? What else is silly, is buying a Non-Nexus, Android phone…

I suggest either of these two:

    -Bugless Beast 4.1.1 AOSP ROM
    -Jelly Belly 4.1.1 AOSP ROM

    Folks, they’re smooth as Butter!
    ;)

Well I’m not on sprint and my nexus s for T-Mobile is on ICS and when I’m at home on wifi it telles me there a update, but when I try to update it it tells me that my phone is already updated.

What is going on ? Why won’t it update ? I’m getting frustrated that it keeps telling me to do it but it won’t. Does anyone have a clue as to why its doing that?
