Last Day to File Taxes For Extenders, Apps and Tips to Help You File

Published

on

Today is the last day to file taxes for individuals who filed for a tax extension back in April.

Ideally, you spent the extra 6 months getting your taxes done and filed, but if not, here are a number of last-minute tips to file your taxes before the end of the day.

If you are someone with complicated taxes, you better suck it up and find a CPA that is still open and willing to work through the night.

If you are a procrastinator that has a basic tax return to file, you can use one of these apps or software tools to finish and file your taxes before the deadline.

Tax Apps for iPhone and Android

If you have an iPhone or Android device and a w-2. You need to download the SnapTax app from Turbotax.

This app is free to download, so you can work through the steps without paying. If you want to use it to file, you need to pay $19.99.

This app takes a picture of your W-2, so you don’t have to type up a bunch of information, and can help you file your tax return fast.

In order to use this app, you should meet the following criteria;

  • Be a 1040EZ Filer
  • Don’t own a home or have kids
  • Only have W-2, interest, or
    unemployment income to report
  • Earned less than $80K ($100K if married)

If you have a more complicated tax return, you can’t file from your smartphone. Thankfully, we have a comparison of Tax apps from TurboTax, H&R Block, TaxACT and Tax Slayer.

These apps all offer a number of benefits and help to file your taxes. You should opt for an electronic filing if your post office has already closed.

Based on my past experience, TurboTax and H&R Block are the top picks, but why not ask your friends on Facebook and Twitter how they did their taxes back in April.

Last Minute Tax Tips for those with an Extension

If you need last-minute tax answers, the Tax Central app from H&R Block can help you figure out the answers to many tax questions. An invaluable tool if all the local CPAs have closed down for the night.

Even if you aren’t self-employed, there are some situations that will allow you to deduct your gadget purchases and cell phone expenses on your taxes. Find out what they are from Bob Meighan, CPA & VP of TurboTax.

If you are looking for your expenses and coming up blank. Look through your Paypal purchases, pull up your credit card statements online and search through email to find old receipts.
