LG G3 Android 5.0 Lollipop Update Problems & Fixes

Published

on

Over the past two months LG and its partnering carriers have been busy pushing the LG G3 Android 5.0 Lollipop update out to owners. And while most of the feedback has been positive, the Android 5.0 Lollipop update is also causing problems for many. The update initially started outside of the US, and then hit the AT&T LG G3 in February, and has continued to almost all US carriers.

Back in December of last year LG started pushing out the highly anticipated software update for the LG G3 in Korea, Poland, parts of Europe and more, and now it’s on most US devices. However, the update for all regions is causing a few small problems for owners, a few which we’ll mention below as well as ways or tips to fix a few of the problems.

Read: LG G3 Android 5.0 Update: What U.S. Owners Need to Know

The LG G3 Android 5.0 Lollipop update is LG’s first major update to the flagship smartphone since being released last year with Android 4.4 KitKat. And while it delivers a bold new look, fresh neat animations, and improved performance, some users are experiencing problems on their LG G3 after the Android 5.0 Lollipop update.

The LG G3 is great, but you'll lose support for upgrades faster than if you own a LG G4.

With Android 5.0 Lollipop on the LG G3 users will notice a few changes immediately. The lockscreen has been completely tweaked and redesigned, as have the notifications in the pulldown drawer. These are better than ever and expandable, but the lockscreen actually lost features with the Android 5.0 update, something many owners aren’t too happy about. It only shows two notifications at a time, and the double tap to open notifications on the lockscreen announced by Google doesn’t work on the G3, you’ll still have to swipe  or unlock to interact with it.

Not listed in the long LG G3 update change logs are the numerous LG G3 Lollipop problems that are plaguing some owners of the device. Over the past few months, and now after the update’s arrival in the United States, we’ve seen numerous complaints about the LG G3 Android 5.0 update, and more are surfacing now that it’s hit almost all major carrier. Our earlier reports on this was flooding with users showing frustration, so hopefully a few tips below can help owners.

Numerous threads over at Reddit and other forums have mentioned problems, lack of features, and more after the Android 5.0 Lollipop update for the G3, and these problems are frustrating many owners. And no, you can’t get the old on-screen buttons back, the new look is designed for Android 5.0 Lollipop, and while colors can still be changed there’s no going back to the old buttons.

LG G3 Android 5.0 Problems

As we mentioned above, the lockscreen has changed completely and is missing features it had prior, which isn’t really a bug, but a problem that owners aren’t too happy about. However, the biggest complaint we’ve been seeing is that LG G3 owners on AT&T are being forced to update. Multiple users have stated they did not accept the update, hit dismiss as they wanted to wait and make sure there were no major bugs or problems, yet the device updated anyways.

We’ve heard talks of AT&T making many software updates mandatory, and that appears to be an issue here with the LG G3 Android 5.0 update. Owners were surprised when the device updated on its own, without them accepting the update. This is a problem for those who’ve rooted, installed Xposed modules, or have done certain tweaks to their devices and didn’t want to upgrade.

Nexus6vsLGG3-4

This is on top of complaints about battery life being worse than before, even though we’ve also heard the LG G3 Android 5.0 update has increased battery life and performance. Usage varies from each user, but we’re hearing horror stories of devices getting extremely hot, running slow, apps crashing, and even device reboots.

It’s no secret that Android 5.0 Lollipop has a few problems that Google has been working hard to address. They recently released an Android 5.1 Lollipop update, and we’re even seeing signs of Android 5.1.1 as well. These could all address some of the battery drain and app crashing, but for now users are stuck waiting for those to arrive. Android 5.0 has a memory leak issue that is causing apps to crash, freeze, start to slow or lag and more. This was thought to be fixed in 5.1 which isn’t on the G3 yet, but we’re hearing will be solved in Android 5.1.1 Lollipop whenever that arrives.

LG G3 Updates Not Completing

While many on AT&T got the update but didn’t want it, on T-Mobile some users are getting a small update followed by a bigger Lollipop update, but some are reporting that is isn’t arriving or won’t finish installing. Whatever carrier you’re on, if you can’t get the update to come through but want it (problems aside) you can use the LG software update tool. This was specifically sending Lollipop for the T-Mobile G3 early, but others can try it too.

Slow Charging

Many owners are reporting that something in the Lollipop update changed how the phone actually charges. Using Qualcomm Quick Charge technology (similar to the Nexus 6, Galaxy S6, DROID Turbo and more) the G3 can charge faster than older devices, but not as fast as the few just mentioned.

However, if you’re not using the wall wart charger that came out of the box, the device tends to charge extremely slow. We’ve heard from multiple owners that have tested this, showing that using the charger that came out of the box for best results. This is sort of a rule of thumb anyways, but try a quality micro-USB cable and the stock charger for best results.

Battery Life

While some are reporting excellent smooth performance and better battery life, as Lollipop should be more efficient and make the phone run better, others are claiming the battery just drains super quick. This can likely be caused by 3rd party apps not supporting Android 5.0 Lollipop. Head into settings > battery, and see if any particular apps are draining your battery faster than normal.

Another thing that will almost certainly fix the battery life issues is clearing the data and cache of the device. Updates are big, have a lot of files, and fragment software similar to Windows computers. Clearing the cache can help, and your best bet is actually a factory data reset, which we’ll mention below.

Head into settings > general > storage > wait for cached data to calculate, and clear the cached data. Beginners  can do something similar by downloading an app called Clean Master. This will clear all update and random files that are not only taking up space, but fragmenting your device storage and slowing down performance.

WiFi Problems

A smaller problem we’re still hearing a little bit about is WiFi issues after the update. And while this probably isn’t related to the update, a few steps could potentially fix it. Try forcing the LG G3 to forget the WiFi network that’s posing problems. Head to the desired connection in Settings and long press then select the Forget Network option. Once that’s done, users will then need to reconnect to the Wi-Fi network with the password. This could re-initiate the connection and fix WiFi drops and issues.

The LG G3 delivers a complete package for smartphone users.

Reboot Your Phone

If you’re getting random app force-closes, lag, problems with text messages coming or going, or just some general issues you’ll be surprised to see how many of these small little things get fixed by a quick reboot of your phone. Not just the reboot option when you hold power, but actually turning it off, waiting and turning it back on. This typically fixes most small bugs when family members ask me questions, so give that a try too.

Factory Data Reset

Doing a factory data reset is your last resort, but to be honest, probably your best option. I always do factory resets on all my devices after updates, to start with a fresh clean slate. This will erase all user data, apps, pictures and more, so be sure to backup all your data.

With Android 5.0 Lollipop Google has a new feature called Tap n Go restore which will actually restore all your apps, data, WiFi connections and more within minutes. It’s extremely easy to do, and makes wiping your phone and setting everything up again easie than ever before. So try a factory data reset, which will likely solve almost all the problems on the LG G3 since the 5.0 update.

Read: How to Reset Your Android Smartphone or Tablet

Users can follow the guide above for the best information. That said, on the LG G3 head into settings > tap the general column and the top, and scroll down to Backup & reset and select this. It will remind you to have all the backup sync options checked, and it’s a good idea to check and let most of those sync first. At the very bottom is the factory data reset. Tap this, follow the instructions and do a factory data reset. If you have the option, don’t wipe the micro-SD card, as that likely isn’t a part of the problem.

All said and done some problems are likely caused by apps, others could be due to issues with Android 5.0.2 Lollipop. Google’s already released Android 5.1 with fixes, and 5.1.1 Lollipop could be coming soon. And while this is good news for LG G3 owners, carriers likely won’t get those pushed to owners for at least another month or two. Drop us a comment below with any questions, concerns, fixes, or feedback.

At least Verizon is smart they haven’t released it yet at all. I was mad but after reading this I feel better they are being cautious.

I am so disgusted w the “lollipop” update. My LG G Pad sucks now!!!! I have Verizon & they have no way to put it back to “kit Kat” which worked gr8. My favorite “dishanywhere” app is totally broken now & I feel like my Android tablet is worthless now. I have also experienced having issues on the internet, has a harder time pulling up certain websites. My battery life is also now worthless! Why am I forced to have this piece of suit software. I pay my Verizon bill every month I paid for this tablet in October for what, Google to force a glitch piece ‘o crap software on me. I am solo irate!!!!!! There needs to be a way to go back to what works!!!!! “Kit Kat” I feel as though I’m being punished. What ever happened to “customer service? Customer is always right” I have no rights being forced to have broken ass! Software. How is this ok?????

G3 AT&T – biggest issue was the forced update: executed at 9:00 AM in the middle of my work morning.
For me the end result has been good. It took several days before my device “settled down” and started working well. I am assuming there was a lot of background optimization happening.
    Couple of watch-outs:
Disable as much AT&T stuff as possible – it really helps especially in battery life.
Look to see if you have competing apps installed – found a couple of conflicting SMS/MMS apps that didn’t like 5.
Be careful with the SD card – to this day I still cannot allocate apps onto the card, just data.

Outside of these, it has worked well for me.

I have helped a few friends/peers/unknowns over the past couple of weeks with their LG G3 Android 4-5 transitions. Not all of these worked but some or all of these did help most. They are sequenced in order.

      1. Move all of your apps from your SD card to the phone
      2. If you can, disable/turn off/remove carrier installed apps
      3. Once apps are off the SD card, remove the sd card
      4. Try your apps and remove any offenders – hint: Facebook and similar apps have been a common problem. Update apps as needed
NOTE: going through your apps may require multiple reboots if you run into serious issues
      5. Once all your apps have been vetted, insert/install your sd card – use it for data/photo’s/music/etc… No apps
      6. Give the phone a few days to “settle down”
NOTE: depending on the carrier, you should look into a SIM ship replacement. This seems to affect AT&T a lot
      7. Have patience.

Some devices have issues my suggestions won’t touch.

OMFG! A new and growing trend among web writers…..repeat the same paragraph a gazillion times before getting to the meat of the subject. Seriously? How many times (and in how many different ways), do you have to repeat that there were some problems encountered in the update….before you explain what the problems are/were?

You got it right. I’m just glad I have Verizon even though everyone is complaining they haven’t released it yet. Now I know why it has problems and they are fixing them first.

They screwed up my phone. In the world I grew up in, “the customer is always right”, and I run my business like that. They have replaced my phone twice- both times it sucks. I ask for a new phone- and ask that they give my scrap phone to another customer, as they give me other ppls scrap infected phones. Just be kind enough to give me a new phone- as I bought it new- in good faith. But NO. TOUGH SHIT PAL. And there’s nothing else- beyond the truth- and the truth is- their remedy to their screw up SUCKS AND HURTS AND IS EVEN MORE DAMAGING TO MY TIME AND MY FRUSTRATION. THE CEO SHOUKD BE FIRED FOR VEING A WIMPY BUSINESS LEADER. TODAY.

So I have had problems with my LG G3 about a week or so after I got it.
I was ready to sell it and go back to my LG G2, but then found out that my G3 was most likely acting up because it needs an update.
So I’ve been patiently awaiting for the Lollipop update.
I was mad that I hadn’t gotten the update through Verizon but pretty much all the other cell phone carriers did get updates out to their phones.
Well after reading all of this I am happy I haven’t received the Lollipop update yet. So as long as when I get the update it don’t act all CrAzY (like thee above mentioned things) I am happy to wait and keep my LG G3. But I Will go back to my LG G2 if I have any problems like this after the update.
    Way to go Verizon!

    • Jason

      04/12/2015 at 9:47 am

Yes way to go Verizon. But my LG3 has worked great since I got it with out doing anything e except the 2 small updates last year right after I got it but still on kit Kat. Maybe you should take yours in and trade got another LG3.

LG blames Google, google says it ain’t there fault, LG modifies the OS, Verizon throws their hands in the air saying we only provide the phone / data / cellular services and blames LG and Google.
Two phones broken by Lollipop, Verizon sent me a replacement, same issues.

    • Richard Perigo

      04/23/2015 at 6:41 am

My suggestion is DO NOT update to Lollipop! Ever since I made that horrible mistake, I have spent hours trying to get my google apps to work with each other. Constantly resetting and uninstalling app updates just to get to the Google play store, I have lost all my data and pics 3 times!. I would LOVE to have the Kitt Katt 4.0 again!

    • Richard Perigo

      04/21/2015 at 6:42 am

      DO NOT UPDATE TO LOLLIPOP!!!
It does not work with the Google account and has been a terrible source of trouble!
I would give anything to be able to roll back to Kitt Katt 4.0

I’m on Verizon and have a LG G3, at first the update was cool until I started getting Wi-Fi issues. I have turned on, tuned off, taken the battery out, reconnected my Wi-Fi several times..and lastly did a factory reset and still showing no real improvements. I truly hope this gets fixed soon…it’s becoming super frustrating

Did mine today and first thing I notice is that my external SD card is not longer being recognized. Re-seat battery, re-seated the SD which shows the removal and inserted message on the notification bar.

Under Settings > Storage > both Mount SD card and Erase SD card are greyed out.

Going to try a factory reset to see if it fixes it.

The only thing I extremely dislike about this update is that the buttons on the bottom turned into shapes. The back button and home button are now shapes. I hate it and just want it back to normal.

I updated to lollipop on my samsung galaxy s5 and had numerous problems, including not able to connect to WiFi and contacts lost. I went to Verizon and they sent me a new galaxy s5. Everything is great, except now I keep getting the notification to upgrade to lollipop. I don’t want to. Afraid of same issues. Do I HAVE to upgrade??I cannot turn off the system upgrade box

    04/22/2015 at 5:45 pm

I fixed mine by going to DATA under setings and making sire “restrict Background Data” box is UNCHECKED on each Google application. Then update via Google Play. i also re-synced all Google apps after I updated them and rebooted. That solved the Google Play Services update freeze. Now everything works fine and a little faster though I’m not a fan of the new GUI and button layout.

Recently upgraded (I use that term with full disdain and sarcasm intended) my Verizon LG G3 to lollipop and experienced all the problems that eveyone has complained about. After trying a hard reset, cache wipe, and reboot with no effect I pulled my SIM card on a hunch. Phone works perfect now!

Another problem I am having is on my lock screen I no longer have any music controls.. Another problem is apps are taking forever to update.. I have to update my Google play and it has yet to even start!

    04/26/2015 at 3:21 pm

I received the annoying recurring alert to complete the upgrade. I dismissed it several times. I finally gave in and selected the update now. After the update was complete, I found it had deleted the pictures I had taken while on vacation the week before. As I did not want to pay the outrageous roaming fees, I had saved these pictures to my SD card. I worked with a VZW chat rep on the issue and he was unable to resolve the issue or provide an answer to why this occurred.

Just did update on my lg g3 through verizon and my 2 month old phone is now slower than ever. Its junk. I get no updates from my email services now unless I open app and refresh (even after 8 hours). My news apps no longer give me breaking news updates. The phone lags like crazy. Man..I am so bummed out right now. This phone is slower and more laggy than my two year old HTC one I replaced this with. I wish there was a way to go back to the old kit Kat system as it was perfect and super fast. Even the smallest little things take forever to do now on this phone. Checking texts or even worse, checking group texts now…sigh. Really sad and verizon was no help….

I accepted the update thinking updated software means better security. Maybe so but I have had many problems since the update. Hopefully someone will see these and do something about it.
    1. Camera issues – flash does not work for regular pictures. However it does work in “selfie” mode. The result is poor pictures that are now fuzzy.
    2. Battery drains a lot faster. I used to be able to use this phone two days without charging. Now I am charging part way thru the day.
    3. Some disabled apps are still using battery and running updates.
    4. My biggest complaint? What happened to my tabs in chrome? Lost all the pages I go to regulalary and have to close and reopen. Urgghh!

Since updating my phone, Wi-Fi is terrible. Pages won’t load, apps won’t load, downloads are almost impossible. I was blaming my Comcast router (which was recently replaced) but it’s not the problem. Im burning through my monthly data allowance because it’s the only way to browse without major delays and headaches. Been through the factory reset and forget Wi-Fi option, cleared cache, took the battery out, NOTHING helps!

I don’t think it is primarily Android that is the issue … stock Android. We are seeing too many issues between carrier versions and even the same device within a carrier. Other than a couple of issues my G3 is doing very well on AT&T yet a co-worker is having major issues, also on AT&T. A couple of Verizon buds are feeling serious pain. The carrier stores are of little help in most cases.

I received a new LG G# phone… same problems. A new phone is not the answer.
I went back to the AT&T store for the 3rd time and they determined that it was something to do with the Google account. They deleted the account and I added it back. some problems are now resolved. But I think I will ask for a new sim card. Hope that will take care of the rest… will keep all post…ed

Hello i bought a lg g3 on amazon. It is running software 4.4.2. It doesn’t read my memory card. The options in storage is grayed out. Is this a known software issue or is it a hardware issue?

Yeah actually on the lg g3 Running kit Kat didn’t have that feature to use an sd card it just recognises external memory and no removable memory card. But that changed with lollipop cuz now I use an sd card.

I have AT&T lg g3 And every now and then it will act funny but not many problems. My biggest upset is in the settings under battery u use to be able to choose which sethings would turn off(like Wi-Fi,Bluetooth, screen brightness and so on) when the battery saver option turned on. Now the only thing u get to control is at what battery percentage the battery saver feature will start. Running 5.0.1 on AT&T lg g3… I also have a lot of the chrome flag tweaks enabled as well that I think really help with lag and scrolling.

Installed the update, now my phone freezes constantly, I cannot get on facebook, twitter, instagram, etc. without waiting several minutes. Just completed the factory reset and I cannot get through the setup screens. basically my phone is worthless and I am not sure I can wait for the “fixes”

I HATE the update, I feel like they took my awesome, brand new phone that loved! Anna traded it for some pos generic teaching type phone. Music turns itself off, battery drains ridiculously fast which is awesome considering that since the update the battery CHARGES ridiculously slow, Facebook is all wonky, took days top get Google play back up, and the thing that bugs me the most is something nobody else has mentioned, SPAM! The new update comes complete with random pop-up ads, they REALLY freakin irritate me. I get enough pop-ups browsing online I don’t need my phone to start bullying me into down loading apps/games and if I have to have these ads shoved down my throat can they at least be for apps that I DON’T ALREADY HAVE! Also, anybody else have issues with Swype on here now? I do… And the sd card is super glitchy constantly saying it’s been unexpectedly removed when it hasn’t been. I want my phone back,i loved my G3 until they broke it with this stupid new os

I’m glad you mentioned the issue with it opening random sites and spam. I was trying to figure out how to post my own comment about this. It doesn’t matter what I click on, text messenger, phone call, fb etc…it immediately pops up SPAM saying I win a PlayStation bundle or an upgrade is necessary, or just random giggle play store games to download. I lived my G3 before the update but have to carry a charger with me everwhere I go now n it does get hit. I’m a stay at home disabled mother. This phone is my only connection to the outside world. I’m very frustrated with it right now! The fix can’t come soon enough.

I bought my LG G3 (D855) already upgraded to Lollipop on Amazon Spain last month, I got it by April 25th and I’ve been using it since.

I expected a long lasting battery, but it seems it drains quickly after it goes under 97%, when it’s about 15% I check my battery usage and realize what drains the most is the screen, but ironically the time is lower than 3 hours, I find it ridiculous.

They are having network issues for only the g3. I don’t know if it’s for all carriers, but Sprint has been getting calls non stop about no network problems. Not even the WiFi connects. When will this problem be solved.?

I just received a promo from AT&T, offering a free Samsung Galaxy S5 with a 2 year agreement. Price wise, not a bad deal. However, after reading numerous comments on this forum and others, I’m not touching an Android phone. I also don’t care at all for AT&T’s forced updates. Ridiculous. Guess it will either be Apple or Windows, but I’ll wait to see what develops with Windows phones and check out some reviews once WIN 10 goes mainstream. I’m not much of an Apple fan either.

  39. Frustrated Verizon customer

    06/24/2015 at 10:12 am

LG Tech support 800-793-8896 They are useless and don’t care about the customer
    Verizon Corporate support 888-844-0375
Call them both and annoy them as much as your G3 is annoying you.

LG blames Google, google says it ain’t there fault, LG modifies the OS, Verizon throws their hands in the air saying we only provide the phone / data / cellular services and blames LG and Google.
Two phones broken by Lollipop, Verizon sent me a replacement, same issues.
I have spent close to 30 hours with tech support between the three of them with no resolution. I have contacted Verizon corporate support, though a bit more understanding, still will not replace the phone with something else, not sure that will resolve the issues as most major phone manufacturers are all having similar issues with Lollipop on older phones. I don’t consider my G3 an old phone, have had it for 3 months, but in the spectrum of technology it’s ending it’s life especially with the G4 out.
Your carrier collects your money, I will continue to beat on them, they need to beat on LG and Google or drop the products.
Got my 8 year old VZone phone charged up and ready to go. Dropping this Smartphone craze.

After updating the OS the home touch button is stuck on the screen and don’t have now option to hide it. What to do? I don’t what it stuck here. It makes my screen smaller. Use a lot of space it iritates me. Please fix this or just let me know how to uninstall the update. It’s better with the old OS version. Thanks! Will wait for reply.

I just got a newer update this morning. I’m hoping this is going to fix the issues from the last lollipop upgrade. This was also another forced system upgrade. Let me know if anyone got another system upgrade and if it helped with any of the issues above. I was seriously ready to take my old phone back from my son as this was getting so annoying.

      07/14/2015 at 7:13 am

I got the new upgrade too. I had issues connecting to my Wi-Fi at home before but it seems to work a lot better now. Hopefully no other issues come about because of it

      • Michele

        07/14/2015 at 8:33 am

Yes Eddie. That was another issue, connecting to home Wi-Fi. Its been good so far and battery life seems to be better. I would normally have gone from 100% at 8 am to 70% by noon with out hardly any use. Cross my fingers this worked.

        07/15/2015 at 10:32 am

I’m still getting the random pop ups stating I won an iPhone or PlayStation bundle. So far no problems with connecting to home Wi-Fi and battery seems to be holding up. I guess it’s too much to ask to have all the bugs fixed at once. I saw they are going to be releasing another system update soon, so I’m hoping that will fix the random pop ups.

AT&T forced me to accept the update again today!!! I completely ignored their icon. Tried to clear iit.Continued ignoring it. Then my phone began updating on its own. While it was sitting untouched next to me! So here’s the problem… My original LG G3 vigor did the same. After the update I thought I had the android virus I heard about on the news. My phone reinstated every deleted text message ever received on that phone. I deleted all and it started over. Everything got ridiculously slow. My battery drained. The phone overheated. Almost too hot to touch. I did the soft reset. No luck. Did hard reset to factory original. Lost everything including play store. Texts took over an hour to arrive at destination. Had to recharge every 3 hours or more or less than 4% battery. Couldn’t connect to Wifi. And the list goes on… AT&T store sent me to repair center. They said not a virus. Everyone has problem with lollipop update. They replaced my phone. That was six days ago. Guess what? Today we start again!!! My phone just decided to update without me touching it. Off Wifi. It said google play store will not work without update… I hate AT&T! If they know there’s a problem with the software why I legate people to use it? I had no problems before! Whatever happened to “If it’s not broken don’t fix it??”

Has anyone had a problem since updating that prevents using wi-fi and bluetooth at the same time? Prior to the update I could have both turned on at the same time. Now I have to pick one or the other. Not able to find a fix for this. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Is there a class action suit for this crap phone already? We have 2 of them and they constantly overheat, shut off if you try to take a picture, heat up when you charge them, you can’t use half the features and they are constantly crashing. I had geek squad replace mine once and my replacement is worse than my original.
