LG G4 Android 6.0 Update Problems & Fixes

Published

on

In October, LG started the first Android 6.0 Marshmallow updates for its popular LG G4, and in February and early March the rest of the U.S. LG G4 owners received it as well. From Sprint to T-Mobile and Verizon, delivering new features and improved performance, but the update is also causing problems for some.

Google officially released Android 6.0 Marshmallow in October, the successor to Android 5.1 released in 2014. It’s loaded with new features, better performance and more. Less than a month later LG was the first major manufacturer to push out an update in Poland, Korea, UK, the US, and have now moved to other devices like the LG V10, or the older LG G3.

In mid-December the Sprint LG G4 Android 6.0 Marshmallow update was officially announced, along with a small changelog, and in late January most other US carriers pushed it out as well. Now that all LG G4 owners are enjoying Marshmallow, here are a few helpful tips and potential fixes for problems we keep hearing about.

Looking at various Android forums it looks like the Sprint LG G4 Android 6.0 update arrived slowly, and the same can be said about other carriers. Now that most in the US are enjoying Android 6.0 on the LG G4, we’re starting to see an influx about problems.

It’s also worth stating that with LG G3 Android 6.0 updates rolling out on AT&T and T-Mobile this week, similar problems could surface for them. Meaning, many of the tips below are worth checking out by G3 owners getting ready for the update.

While we’ve had a rather good impression of Android 6.0 Marshmallow on the Nexus 5, Nexus 6P, and other devices, some users with the LG G4 are reporting more than a few problems. Some of those were present on Nexus devices, and some aren’t. With every update the possibility of problems is real, but most users should be able to proceed without any issues. However, if you do, these are some potential fixes.

Get the LG G4 Android 6.0 Update Now

By now all LG G4 owners should have Android 6.0 Marshmallow, but if not, here’s how to manually install it right now.

Those with a Sprint, T-Mobile or Verizon LG G4 can head into settings > about phone > check for software updates to manually look for, accept, download and install the latest Android 6.0 Marshmallow software release.

Read: Android 6.0 vs Android 5.1 Lollipop: What’s New in Marshmallow

However, that isn’t the only option. We’d recommend all LG G4 owners download and install the PC program called LG Bridge. This allows for device backups, which is a good idea before a big update like Android 6.0, data and file transfer, and installing software updates. T-Mobile users got it first using this route, rather than a typical over the air release, but it’s available on both platforms.

Setup and install the LG Bridge, put in the required information, and check for updates. Many owners have confirmed they were able to manually update to Android 6.0 Marshmallow on the G4 using the LG Bridge application.

Android 6.0 MMS Bug

Countless reports all over the official Google product forums have confirmed there is a problem with MMS (picture messages) in Android 6.0 Marshmallow. They either fail to send, or don’t arrive correctly for users. Whether this be through Google Hangouts, the stock messenger app, or third party text applications like Textra. It just says “download” and images never work. We’re still waiting for LG to issue another quick bug fixing update, and the latest Google security patches for April.

We aren’t experiencing this on the Nexus 6P, but it’s been a widespread problem for multiple different Nexus phones running Android 6.0 Marshmallow, and some with the LG G4 on Android M. Most users will have no problems with texts or picture messages, but if so, the only solution could be try another text app, or wait for Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow to arrive, as the bug was fixed in 6.0.1 which Google recently released.

LG G4 Android 6.0 Battery Life

As always, battery life is an issue we’re hearing a lot about after the update to Android 6.0 Marshmallow. A lot of this is from the update itself, apps being updated, and users simply using the phone more in the days after an update. Give it a few days to settle, and battery life typically goes back to normal.

That being said, a few reports have confirmed something called “logd” in the battery stats settings menu eating up about 20% of battery life on the LG G4 after the update to Android 6.0 Marshmallow. This is a problem that has already been fixed on the Korean and international model, and will probably quickly be fixed on US models too.

LG-G4-battery-life-720x525

We’d suggest all owners update all of their apps, then head into settings > about phone > and disable “Activity logs” which is causing the drain mentioned above.

However, those who are still experiencing battery life issues may want to check for rogue apps using battery by heading to “battery” in the settings area. If the situation doesn’t improve we’ve put together a guide that will take you through some steps to fix battery life. It’s not for the LG G4 specifically, but many of the same steps apply here. If all else fails, a factory data reset typically solves any and all battery issues after a major software update. More details on that can be found below. We’re having no problems with LG G4 Android 6.0 battery life.

LG G4 Android 6.0 Reboot Problems

We’re getting a lot of reports about random reboots, which could be from random apps, and not the update itself. Some of these reboots are bricking the phone, where it reboots to an Android logo and doesn’t seem to work. This thread has more details, and some potential fixes.

Random reboots could be caused by a lot of different things. Apps may not be updated to work with Android 6.0 Marshmallow, the phone could have other problems and more. The first step users should do is head to the Google Play Store and update all of their apps. Once you’re on Android 6.0 a few apps will automatically need to be updated, which are likely crashing and causing the LG G4 to reboot.

Read: How to Backup Android in 5 Easy Steps

However, our suggestion for almost every problem mentioned today will be a factory data reset. This erases the entire phone, but gives users a fresh clean slate to start off with. Many users claim Marshmallow is faster, better, smoother and a great experience, but most of those reports are from users who did a reset and had a fresh version to work with.

Follow the link above to backup the LG G4, save texts with apps like SMS Backup & Restore, and do a reset. Android 6.0 has a neat restore feature that will restore all apps, data, game saves and more, so don’t worry. This will be an option once it reboots.

LG G4 Android 6.0 WiFi & Bluetooth Problems

We’re also seeing a lot of complaints after each update about WiFi problems. I have the Nexus 5, Nexus 6, Nexus 5X, Nexus 6P, NVIDIA SHIELD Tablet K1 and the Pixel C. All running Android 6.0 or above with no WiFi problems at all. However, if you are have issues, a few quick things could solve them.

First up is try restarting your home router, and if it’s an all-in-one router or attached to a cable modem from a cable company, turn that off for 10 seconds and back on. This usually clears the air, and allows connections to resume. Another option is to head into settings on the LG G4 > WiFi > long-press and forget the your wireless network. Then reconnect and re-enter the password, and WiFi should work again. The same rules apply for Bluetooth issues. Try turning it off and on (both the device and Bluetooth on your phone) and reapplying any connections.

Other Problems

Another option that can fix any other problems, battery life issues and more is clearing the cache on your LG G4 after the update. This removes all the update files and fragmentation of the software after an update has been completed.

Users can download Clean Master from the Google Play Store, or boot into recover and wipe the cache partition there. It’s a risk thing, and if done wrong users could completely erase the LG G4, so use caution.

LG G4 leather backs

That said, turn off the LG G4. Then while off push and hold power and volume UP. Once the boot screen comes on keep holding. When the LG logo appears let go of power for one second then hold it down again. This should reboot the phone into “recovery mode” which users can use volume up/down to navigate. Head to Wipe Cache, and use power to select. Don’t accidentally do a factory data reset, as this will erase everything. That said, we’d suggest all owners do a factory data reset, re-download all apps, and start fresh for the best experience possible.

This can be done by going into Settings > Backup & reset > and Select reset. The entire process should only take a few minutes, and the phone will reboot fresh. Sign into WiFi, your Gmail, restore old apps using the restore features mentioned above or built into Android, and you’re all set.

If you’re having LG G4 Android 6.0 problems drop us a comment below, and we’ll update with more details as they become available. Now that it has been over a month or two since the LG G4 update arrived, we’re expecting another small bug fixing update and security patches in the near future. Once we know more, we’ll share the information.

I received my update this morning and installed it during my morning routine before work. When I went to boot the phone, it booted into the new build just fine. It ran for about 5 minutes, then rebooted. When the LG logo came on, the android logo was garbled and it wouldn’t boot. I pulled the battery after waiting 5 minutes at this boot screen. It booted to the LG logo again, this time with the Android logo correctly displayed. After an hour on the boot screen, no change. I pulled the battery again and tried to boot into recovery mode. 15 minutes waiting for recovery mode to boot and still no luck. Hoping to go into the Sprint store later today and see if they can do anything with it.

Updated my phone just fine. Everything was working good, then on way from work and it just rebooted on its own and then just stuck on the LG splash screen. Removed battery and tried to turn it on and now phone wont do anything. Guess I’ll have to go to the sprint store.

I updated this morning my LG G4 Sprint OTA, Ir rebooted well but the contacts are being updating ever since for hours. I made the the Wipe cache from recovery but the problem in contacts remain. Any suggestions before a hard reset?

Please please of you have an lg g4 DON’T DOWNLOAD THE UPDATE. it sucks. It wiped out many of my main contacts, or won’t sync properly and will not connect to mobile data. It is really bad. I’ve had enough of sprint… You know what they said… It’s LG fault. And I should go get a new phone…. Yea right with another carrier. I beg you don’t download marshmallow… You will regret it

    • MRobby

      05/03/2016 at 12:25 pm

Donn, the update is an Android update, not a carrier update. It is used on phones made by Samsung, LG and HTC just to name a few phones that run an Android OS. My friends and I – all with a different carrier are all experiencing the same issues. If you research the blogs you will see the new update is affecting all carriers’ devices, not just yours. The best thing we can do is vent to the people behind developing all of these OS updates and beg them to get it right the first time. I went to my phone company’s store and they confirmed they are seeing a lot if these reported issues and all we can do is wait and that a new device will not help me at this time.

Recommend updating PRL & profile under settings update. Then check mobile network mode (LTE/CDMA). Give it a minute…should correct some glitches. Not all.

Had a problem after android 6.0 update on LG G4 and a samsung Gear s2 3g. Call and ring quality is poor only when using bluetooth. Gear s2 works fine when using WiFi or standalong mode. Reset everything several times and reinstalled Samsung software. Still have same problem.

I’m currently having this issue also, did you find any solutions?

      • Butters Stotch

        02/18/2016 at 3:43 pm

Same here. Speaker handles music fine, but call quality is unusable. Disappointing since making calls through watch is why I got s2 instead of something running Android wear.

Somebody needs to fix soon or this watch is going on eBay.

It is a shame the sd card can only be formatted to portable and not have an option to be formatted to internal which I was expecting to be able to do so.

  10. Vincent

    01/07/2016 at 2:34 pm

Indeed, I also suspected that the SD card could be formatted into Internal memory which is not. I have problems with it. First TomTom can not put a map on the SD-card and also Spotify store the music on the internal memory. Can not move it to the SD. Second problem that I have is the bluetooth connection from my Polar M400 watch with the G4. It is not working. I hope that it all will be fixed in the coming months but right now it is a little disappointment.

My finance and i both have the lg g4. She installed the update and now her windows surface wont recognize her phone or allow for file transfers. I havent installed the update and my phone can connect. Is there an internal setting that must be changed or will there be a patch to fix this bug?

Did the update a few days ago, but the screen won’t unlock. What I mean is the screen remains black, the knock on feature won’t work, and pressing the power button won’t unlock the screen either. Sometimes, after pressing the power button several hundred times, MAYBE the screen will unlock. Another way to get it to unlock is to plug in the charger. I am also having issues with the proximity sensor.

    • lovebug

      01/13/2016 at 5:43 pm

I updated yesterday and now my screen so won’t turn on unless I plug it in or like you press the power button a million times. When im on a call and someone else calls I can see who it is because the screen is black. Have you found a fix by any chance? Oh the proximity sensor is an issue also.

Same here. My screen will stay black if the phone senses that its dark/low lighting. It works fine inside with the lights on or when outside in the sun. So odd….
I literally cant access my phone in the morning no matter how many times i hit the button until i turn the light on in my room.

when the screen will not unlock, I hold the phone up to a bright light for 5 seconds or so and the issue is fixed. Great call on this. I thank you for the temporary fix until the updates repairs start rolling in.

Yes. Try pressing your phone’s proximity sensor with your thumb (right above the front camera). Press + Hold and then press the power button. BINGO! Screen will turn on.

My proximity sensor is not working since, there’s a lot of dust inside. :/

I added a pattern screen lock and the issue mostly went away there was another post here said to make sure the Power button option at the very bottom of that screen lock settings window is unchecked. It still does it at times but another post said it only happens in the dark. I turned the my bedroom light on and it worked. I’ve now shut off my Auto brightness to see if that works.

For those experiencing the issue with the screen not coning o.j. in low light, it defined dies seem to be a proximity sensor issue. I finally followed through and did the calibrate proximity sensor instructions for Verizon that I found at this link and I’m happy to say all seems to be well now! I’d definitely recommend giving it a try if you have a Verizon G4. https://forum.xda-developers.com

I found a site ( can’t find it now) but it said to take out the battery, and connect your phone to your PC. Some reported hearing clicking noises from the PC and some did not when they did this. Then disconnect phone from USB and put the battery back in. This seemed to fix the non-responding power button for me for quite a while. Now if I just remove the battery for a minute or so, it seems to fix itself again.

I just got my LG G4. I got the Marshmallow notification but haven’t downloaded yet. It’s just waiting to be downloaded. My previous phone is was a Galaxy S5 which I have a similar screen problem like you. I have to press the home and power button randomly multiple times for it to turn on. I think these updates are made by kids. It’s ridiculous!! I’m waiting for 6.0.1 update to bypass 6.0 for my G4.

    • Gary

      01/15/2016 at 4:02 am

I’m having the exact same problems with unlock. If the phone is on charge or very recently being on charge it will unlock straight away, otherwise it can take 10 to 20 seconds of repeated power button pressing or screen tapping before I can get access to the phone. Was thinking of backing up the phone and factory resetting but the LG bridge app says I have to delete >9GB of data on my phone before it can perform a backup and the built-in LG phone backup app says it can’t find any of the installed apps when trying to back them up.

This is my first LG phone – not impressed with their QA department.

same problem. i am in Canada and have the Rogers version. I did OTA update Feb 03. Since then I am having the exact same issues with the unlock screen. I have tried wiping cache and then did a factory reset. Did not fix the problem. Now I’m trying to find out how to downgrade back to 5.1.

i never found a solution. originally had OTA update, then tried factory reset, and then tried factory reset without my google account auto-restoring any settings/apps. same problem every time. would unlock maybe 75% of the time, but the rest of the time was stuck. sometimes pressing the power buttong repeatedly would work, but often didn’t. Very frustrating. The phone was purchased new from my provider in Aug 2015.

Fortunately, my provider sent me a new one as a replacement. I was hesitant to do the update, but I went ahead and updated the new phone before logging in my google account. i updated the LG Bridge software and not OTA. I logged in to google afterwards and manually installed apps afterwards. So far seems ok.

I only have this problem at work when my phone is in its waterproof hiking pouch. It’s super frustrating. But when I take it out it is fine. So I am almost positive that the proximity sensor needs to be reset.

My Sprint OTA update arrived last night (Jan 11, 2016) – I haven’t had time to explore the new features but did have to reset my knock-code since my previous one no longer worked. But so far seems to operate normally…

Note that I had my original G4 replaced a few months ago due to the hardware issue described below. So if your phone is randomly rebooting/freezing it’s worth reading, esp. if your Sprint LG G4 was built before Sept 2015:

After downloading the latest version, the ‘contacts’ section of my phone keep ‘loading’ endlessly and would not display anything. I am unable to receive/send calls and messages. I also noted that my battery drains so fast and would not charge properly even when plugged in, probably because the contact section keeps running in the background even if I forced stop it. Anyone had this issue and managed to solve it?

My LG G4 has stopped reading my PNY 256 Hard Drive in usb host mode since this wretched [at least for me] update. Would that I had not installed Marshmallow. It NOW says my PNY drive is unreadable and wants to FORMAT it. None of my apps can access ANYTHING via usb host, which now seems to no longer exist, save for being able to connect my keyboard to this thing [which is how I am typing this right now]. One of the suspicions currently being explored on the web is that this is a serpentine effort to prod people toward cloud services. To quote one of my favorite comic book characters from my youth “I SAY THEE NAY!!!”
Being able to use flash drives, card readers, microsd cards is what makes Android GREAT in my opinion, and I am certain in the hearts and minds of many others. THE LG G4, for ME anyway, was a great phone until this situation Imagine being able to carry 256 gigabytes of class material, an ENTIRE music performance backed up on the same flash drive [I’m a musician who performs solo from time to time with my own music], that could be played back from your phone. I once used a powered usb hub to connect a 3TB, 4TB, AND 6TB drive, ALONG WITH my usb 3.0 PNY 256 usb flash drive. THEY ALL SHOWED UP IN ALL OF MY apps and I was able to ACCESS MEDIA, PHOTOS, and PDFS FROM EACH ONE OFTHEM. Seamlessly, I might add. PHENOMENAL!!

Alas, it would seem those days are gone now.

Even after suffering through the dreaded RESET, the issues remain. I know it was MARSHMALLOW [“It was YOU, Fredo!! You broke my heart!”] that did this. I tried the same drive on someone’s S4 that hadn’t “upgraded” and the drive appeared and worked, NO PROBLEM. I honestly don’t care about emoji, I WANT MY USB HOST MODE BACK THE WAY IT WAS. Is anyone else having this issue?

Oh well. At least I can still connect my keyboard and mouse. Not the same as having access to my files AT WILL. I get it. Who would use cloud services if they could have everything on their own drives? I hope this can be reversed somehow. Sadly, even a trip to the Sprint store yielded no reprieve, despite the valient efforts of Cameron, the tech who worked on the LG G4. I am hoping this was an UNINTENDED side effect of the Marshmallow update that can be repaired.

My profound apologies for the long rant.

I’m also experiencing this problem! I can no longer use my USB OTG flashdisk with my LG G4. I used this feature very frequently. I wish they would inform one of the features that would be removed before making the decision to upgrade to a new OS.

hi, any idea if this is resolved already?
I just had my motherboard changed (as it went dead on me) and it’s the new version after I got it back.

I updated my G4 a few days ago and the battery life is absolutely terrible now. After only 1hr 7min of Screen On Time, my battery was down to 19%. This is after I already did a factory reset, and with minimal apps running. I haven’t changed anything with my usage or my apps, and I used to only charge my phone every other day and still it never got down to 19%. Now it drains to the teens in about 12 hours.

Updated mid-way through january. My apps tell me to go to the google-play store to update them but when i try to open google play all i get is a blank white screen. I’ve spent days looking for fixes and nothing works. So i guess i can’t even update should the release a patch.

I used to have an iphone but switched because they kept releasing software updates that would just cripple the supposed “smart phone” and make it little more than my Razor back in 2008. Well guess what android just did?! Apparently incompetence is a requirement to make software for android and apple. It’s seriously like they take the short bus to work every day.

The only issue that I’m having with the update is with my live streaming like Periscope. Every since the update, the live stream is choppy and sluggish. I have reset the phone to factory defaults twice with no luck. I took it by the Sprint store…they have no idea. I took it by another local tech, who said it’s the firmware associated with the upgrade. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I use live streaming for my business so it’s crucial that I get it fixed. Thank you.

I found a fix to the mobile network being disabled after the marshmallow update. I have the LG G4 phone and Sprint service so I went into the Sprint Zone app and under Support theres a Update Profile feature. I tapped on it and my mobile network LTE is working now. 02/07/2016 at 2:20 pm

For anyone having trouble connecting to WiFi or Mobile Data after doing the Marshmallow update, here’s how I fixed it:

    Settings–>General–>Backup & reset–>Network Settings reset

After I did this a couple times, I was able to connect via WiFi. I hope this helps. LG suggested backing up the phone and doing a factory reset. I was trying to avoid that because I am always afraid something will get lost or that it will take too long to get my device back to the way I like it. So, if resetting the network is all it takes, don’t hard reset if you don’t have to. Good Luck

Updated a few days ago. From then on the SD Card is no longer recognized: I have 30 GB of Spotify pending: as they fill the internal memory, Spotify stops downloading and ignores the SD. I can only format the SD as internal memory, and, after it finishes (it needs about a minute), I get a notify: “59 GB not available”. If I put something on it, say 5GB, unmount it and remount it, I get “54 GB not available” (the free space on the SD)… No other problems as the ones reported… I just ended a fresh reinstall but nothing changed

Updated today from Lollipop to Marshmallow on my LG G4 from AT&T. Kept getting a notification that Google Play Services needed to be updated. Google Play Store kept crashing (or not running in the first place, just going by the message). I tried updating the Play store with an APK from an external source, which did not fix anything. Then the notifications about the Play store and Play Services kept coming, more frequently to where they just kept flashing on the screen.

I eventually moved everything I wanted over to the external SD card, made a backup, and did a factory reset, setting up phone as a new device. Everything seems good at the moment. Marshmallow is installed and I’m not having any trouble. I just put the SD card back in and restored my data. Everything looks pretty good so far. I’ll be back to update if things change.

I did the update on Tuesday. My phone completely died last night. It froze then it rebooted and was stuck in the power cycle. Then it finally went black and I couldn’t get it to turn on at all. I took it to Sprint, they tried to do a hard reset but it didn’t work the technician is supposed to look at it today but this isn’t the first time. They told me that LG is having software issues. I haven’t even had this phone for a full year and this will be the 2nd time I have had to replace it. I am furious. I shouldn’t have to replace a phone every 4-5months.

I have an AT&T LG G4 which just updated 2 days ago. Only issue so far is it continuously drops my Wi-Fi. Its not my router because it does it at home and work and other places. When I try to connect via the shortcut it never connects and I have to go into settings, choose the network and forget it, re-enter password and then it will connect but after a few hours it will drop again and I have to do that all over again. Prior to this update I have had an issue on this phone where it will never automatically connect to Wi-Fi when at home or work. It sees the network but I have to click on Wi-Fi and tell it to connect. When I first got the phone last summer it would automatically connect to any Wi-Fi I had remembered and that stopped last fall and I never was able to figure out how to fix it. Now this issue.. Its almost as if AT&T wants it this way so I use data and they can charge me!

Updated my LG G4 (Australia) to Marshmallow yesterday.
Seems to be working fine/well, attributing my extra battery drain to downloading apps and generally extra use for the time being.

However, my current major issue is that my phone is disabling Bluetooth periodically (looks to be 30-60 idle minutes), until I manually turn it back on.
This is uh, a reasonably troublesome issue for a Pebble Time user. Doubtful that changing the Pebble Time app’s dozing will fix it as the phone is turning of Bluetooth as a whole. Haven’t found any useful power management or Bluetooth settings so far; any and all help would be appreciated!

    02/15/2016 at 2:21 am

Similar issues for me. Lg g4 h815 in Oz. Marshmallow updared resulted in poor battery life, inability to use SD card to hold spotify downloaded music, Bluetooth turning itself off when connected to car, Bluetooth not picking up mic in car (so unusable effectively), not picking up mic on Bluetooth headphones, Bluetooth headphones dropping out of fraction of a second every minute or so.

Installed android 5.1, and all problems solved now.

I won’t touch Marshmallow for a few months if at all.

I updated my lg g4 and now I think it has ram problems because my quick circle don’t work properly… The good thing is that the remote app now works without any problems, sending the infrared signals faster.

My LG G4 started running hot all the time and the battery lasted 2 hours instead of 12 when I updated to Marshmallow. I was going crazy looking for solutions, and looking in the Battery Usage section didn’t help. What I did was, I installed an app called “OS Monitor”, which shows you what apps are using what % of the CPU. I found that “Accuweather” was using 20% of the CPU all the time (“Battery Usage” did not show this app consuming any battery %). I uninstalled “Accuweather” and now my phone is back to normal, working like a charm like before. Hope this helps someone!

My LG go is playing up seriously. I had lollipop but now I have Marshmallow. (Spain). I got locked out of my phone a few days ago, gave me just the logo screen, so I tried everything but eventually had to do a hard reset. Omg I lost everything. Today my phone is in the smell situation again. Wtf is going on. I have only had my phone since Dec 2015. I am sick to death of losing information time and time again. Yes I did a backup, but even so LG should fix the problems. NOW.

Like many others here, my biggest (and most annoying) issue is that the Bluetooth automatically toggles off every 30 minutes or so. Extremely frustrating because I play Spotify music in my car via BT and also wear an LG smart watch. This needs to be fixed ASAP!

    Hii everyone,

I just ran the update, download went well. Then phone rebooted and started the installation. After installed 3%, the installation got cancelled and phone restarts itself without the new update installed. This is the third time this happened to me. Anyone with the same problem?

I updated my LG G4 (Verizon) last night to Marshmallow. It went smooth and downloaded quickly. It started rebooting after the update, flashed the LG screen, flashed the Verizon screen, and then promptly went back to the LG screen and hasn’t come back out of it. I’ve already tried taking out the battery; didn’t work. Any Ideas?

    • Anthony Scafidi

      03/01/2016 at 10:59 am

Hey Maddie, Hopefully you got this fixed already since it’s been a while now, but this same thing happened to me. I downloaded it fine, I did a factory data reset to try to avoid any bugs and things were great for a day. That next night my phone did exactly what you described – nothing worked to get it out of the “bootloop”. I called Verizon tech support and they ran me through a couple troubleshooting steps, none of which worked and they sent me a replacement for free (LG warranty covered it – it’s apparently an LG software issue). It was also recommended to not download Marshmallow again on the new phone until we see the next release (which would be 6.0.2 I guess??)

Upgraded around 1 week ago and didn’t face issues with any app. But battery life is ruined! I did the hard reset, which seemed to work for 2 or 3 days and then the bad battery life is back again. I’m seriously thinking to go back to 5.1.

Updated last night and I hate this damn update. Messed up some previous keyboard settings I had AND REMOVED THE SLEEP ANIMATIONS. It’s so annoying not to see the old TV shut off animation that I’m used to. The fade to black is slow and throws me off because jt only did that when I left the phone idle. I’m also charging my phone and browsing the web, battery is dying faster than its charging.

I don’t have any real problems except that in the left-hand side of my notification/status bar there is a blank box that just sits there that I can’t get rid of as the rev is no notification or running app in my dropdown notification screen. Anyone else having this problem? Know how to fix it? Is annoying.

I have big damn problem with the update. I just updated my LG G4 (Verizon) everything runs smoothly except trying to turn on my phone. Whenever the screen is turned off for a period of time, more than about 10 seconds and then when I try to turn it on, it doesn’t work. The only method I can do get around this problem is removing the battery and reinserting it again. Shouldn’t have updated.

            02/24/2016 at 8:40 pm

@maggi, I did that too. but it does not fix the issue. I do have a transparent screen protector over the proximity sensor. I think your issue was fixed. So do you use a screen protector ? if so is it a glass protector ?

        • Maggi

          02/28/2016 at 11:06 pm

No, still no fix. It doesn’t work in the dark unless it’s charging. I’d rather not remove the expensive screen protector that Verizon put on my phone when I bought it a few months ago. I need my screen protected and it worked fine before this update. :/

            03/08/2016 at 12:37 pm

Updated wifes verizon g4 to marshmallow and now when she gets home it just sucks the life out of my internent and we have to disable wifi on the phone to be able check email, surf the net and such without it taking forever. I know it is the phone because when I disable the wifi I can watch Netflix and everything else I can do online with no problems when she is not here with her g4.

      02/23/2016 at 4:30 am

Turns out that a new version of verizon’s cloud app was released around the same time the g4 got the marshmallow push. After i unistalled the new cloud app, life in the fast lane is good again. For me, marshmallow was not the cuplprit as i originally thought. If you have slow internet issues, check for any apps that were updated around the time you started having speed issues. Hope this helps.

I was having the same issue with my screen staying black . I read on one site that recommended removing your case or screen protector, cause it may be blocking a sensor ?? I had a tempered glass screen protector on my phone & decided to take it off to see if it would help. And it did,so far my phone has been working fine since I took it off. I suggest giving it a try to see if helps with yours.

I paid a lot for that screen protector though! Verizon put it on for me when I bought the phone a few months ago so if it’s causing the phone to not work now then Verizon can give me a new one. It was fine before the update. So aggravating!

Similar issue here. It wants to format the SD card, once done, it works for a couple hours, then shows its corrupt and wants to format again. Eventually it just won’t recognize it any more. I’ve tried 5 different cards ranging from 8 Gb to 128 Gb. Same result with each.

MY Nexus 5 (LG) stopped working – Making calls, after the Marshmallow update. Couple of other issues too (tilt, speaker gorgling noise, screen lighting etc..) Called Google who pointed to LG. Did also a factory reset (after taking backup).Sent phone to LG. LG says because there is a small scratch (Oct 2013 mfg), which did not exist when i sent via FEDEX, they have to FIX everything and would cost $155/-. Though the phone is bought less than 5 months, its warranty is NOT valid it seems due to the screen scratch.!! Have reported to Business Bureau in US as I am getting kicked around LG and Google teams. Anyone else in this situation..?

I’ve will be on my 5th G4 in 7 months. 1st one overheated and froze constantly. Verizon was sooo accommodating by giving me a replacement REFURBISHED phone after only 10 days of use. I had to replace the 2nd one 5 weeks later after a Verizon update disabled getting gps position unless I had data. They again sent me a refurbished phone. That worked well until Marshmallow update prevented me from downloading anything unless I was on mobile data, even updating apps. Verizon, again, sent me a refurbished phone. It had a bad screen right out of the box. This time, when I called for a replacement, they would not send me anther phone they received the old phone. After speaking with the “supervisor,” I was told that another refurbished phone would be sent out overnight. Next day, I find out that it was sent regular US post office and that it would take 5 days. I called Verizon support again and support assured me that the phone was indeed shipped overnight, they even sent me an email stating it. I find out later that night that it was shipped regular post office and it WILL take 5 days!

Just wondering if anyone else had these types of problems with the Verizon LG G4.

Verizon, just like any other company, is great as long as you don’t have any problems but god forbid you have any problems. Every update that they pushed on my phone without my knowledge, forces me to use more mobile data. I don’t think this is coincidence.

I updated my G4 on T-mobile last week and after week of problems with apps freezing up and rebooting it finally just died and never came back on. Had to get a warranty replacement from T-Mobile, even they couldn’t even get it to turn on at all to get into factory reset mode.

Contacts Sync Fix <– I just downloaded a free app by this name from Playstore and it fixed my Contact syncing issue and Google Calendar syncing issue. However I still have a solar-powered landline since the Marshmallow update my phone won't work in the dark unless it's charging.

Re: “my phone won’t work in the dark unless it’s charging.”
I had the exact same problem. It was because the toughened glass screen protector I added happened to cover up the proximity sensor (between the camera and the speaker). In the dark, the proximity sensor fails – thinking it is touching a face etc, so stops the phone turning on. I carefully cut/chipped the screen protector away in that spot and I’ve never had a problem since. Good luck!

    02/29/2016 at 9:13 am

I posted this before, but no one payed attention. If you are having problems with your phone not turning on in low light because of your screen protector IT IS YOUR PROXIMITY SENSOR. You need to recalibrate it, just google “recalibrating proximity sensor LG G4” and you will find info, it’s not hard, but the specifics are slightly different depending on your service provider. I have T-Mobile which for some reason did not allow the feature….so I seem to be screwed, but you Verizon folks should be fine.

Hi. The recommendation for me didn’t go ignored, I was just a bit uneasy about it. However, I decided to go ahead and try this recommendation for my issue with my screen not waking in low light settings. The steps weren’t as “scary” as I thought they would be. I can’t say for certain that it has worked 100%, but hopefully this evening I will be able to test it fully. I will provide an update tomorrow. I hope it’s o.k. to share the link to the information I used. https://forum.xda-developers.com/verizon-g4/general/guide-how-to-recalibrate-proximity-t3278256 Again, I have a Verizon phone so these instructions are specific to that carrier.

Update: This appears to have worked. Thank you Brandon. I’m so glad I finally followed through with your recommended fix. If you have a Verizon G4, then give this fix a try. I have a glass screen protector on my phone and refuse to take it off because of an update when it was fine before. I’m sitting in a fairly dark room right now and it is responding like it used to. Very happy!!!

I got the g4 on Friday at about 9:30am plugged it into my power converter in my car and I will say the lgg4 charges super fast. I was impressed by the time i got home the phone was fully charged. I played with it the rest of the the day and plugged it back in before I went to bed. I played with it the whole next day and was very happy. I got a good 10-12 hours out of the battery with pretty heavy use was very impressed considering what is under the good. I decided to go ahead and up date to 6.0 after the update I fully charged the the phone again before playing with marshmallow..The first issue I noiticed was Wi-Fi kept dropping or was taking forever to connect to pages once, when and if it did connect it took forever. Now for videos they either took forever to load or they would just time out altogether. so I jumped on the laptop did a little research and found out that a lot of other LG users were having the same issue the artical said you should install 3rd party app by the name of DNset. so I did that and it remedied the Wi-Fi connectivity problema. That’s when I noticed the batter literally watched it drop 30%- 50% of the use I got out of it the first day. With that happening I jumped on the internet and did a Google search again seen other g4 uses were having shorter battery life also after the update with that I decided i would take the phone back Monday morning and ask them to do a rollback to lollipop and was told that they couldn’t do that for legal issues so with a little discussion he decided to give me a new phone . I have been stopping the 6.0 update and I have been getting 10 – 14 hours on the battery with mid usage.. That being said I suggest waiting on getting the update until they fix the Wi-Fi connectivity and battery problem. Since I got the new phone and just left the factory lollipop installed without installing my backup of my apps I have not had one battery or connectivity issue. I been installing my apps one at a time and testing a bit before the next app installs by the end I got all my apps back and battery lasted 10-12 hours again with medium use..

Did the update over a month ago and since them my phone only receives service in certain areas. So now I spend a out 10 hours a day with out service of any sort on my phone and when I get service everything from those 10 hours floods my phone causing it to slow down or crash each time. I wish either lg waited to drop this update on us or had a way to reverse it to the present ions one until they came up with something better. I like the previous update way better than this one.

After the update to marshmallow on my lg g4, the screen wont turn on unless there is bright light. In a totally dark room, or placing my thumn completely over the sensor and I hit the power/wake button, the phone will not wake up.

My Verizon LG G4 update seems a bit better (so far) than most, but I posted earlier that I lost the ability to make phone calls out or receive phone calls (one major purpose of a cell phone I think, no?) … and on Facebook Messenger the loss of making or receiving audio or video calls, yet all other functions on Messenger works. Also have not lost the ability to make and receive audio or video calls on Skype.
Verizon sent me a replacement REFURBISHED phone, with Android 5.1, and I restored my earlier LG backup with everything in tact to the date of the backup. Everything worked as usual. However, the 6.0 update screen constantly was nagging to install. Somehow, whether automatically or me accidentally touching ‘update now’ and not being able to stop the update, it did it … GRRrrrr …. now THIS phone can receive and send calls (so far) but same issue with Facebook Messenger … no audio or video calls in or out… it disconnects on the first ring … WHAT NOW !?!?

  121. Zoltan

    03/03/2016 at 3:12 pm

PS … all permissions on the Messenger is allowed .. so that is not the issue !!

I was first offered the update by T-mobile in November. I tried to download via air and the download goes fine until about 1/3 of the way down. Then the Android icon falls over and I get error. I contacted LG and they said they would have engineers look into it. I have received nothing from them and T-mobile wanted me to follow LG’s advice and if that did not correct things, they wanted me to do a full reset and try (I did. Same issue) and if that did nit work I needed to send it in for replacement. I cannot afford to be without my phone. So, what’s something that should work on the upgrade? Up to this point, I simply ignore the request..

This update is awfull. Half the time my phone now works when it wants to….not when I need it to. The music fans video such as Pandora band YouTube or any other form of music or video even Facebook won’t work. I have done a factory update that didn’t fix anything…it only made things worse. I then got a replacement phone through INSURANCE and the same thing happened to the new phone. Any suggestions…or do I just need to go to another carrier or the iPhone?

Since the update i have numerous apps that won’t open or respond. I can’t delete and reinstall as google play is one of them! I did a factory reset. It worked for all of an hour. So frustrated!!! I have a perfectly fantastic phone in which the usage has been utterly ruined by this update!

The old OS was perfectly fine and now there are nothing but issues. First it downloaded over mobile data by its self after I repeatly said NO to update it. My messages aren’t sending and I can’t receive messages they all come in bulk hours later. Maps says “data connection lost” when I’m driving but it works just fine on everything else and I use Maps a lot since I’m an over the road driver. My setting aren’t working. For example I have it set for my headset to only work for calls. Before when I listen to music and I would make/receive a call the music would stop and I could take the call no problem. Now the music never stops and plays in my headset as well as the radio while the. Person on the line is trying to talk and I have to turn the app off myself. Most of the time I miss a call because it down at turn the music off anymore causing me to miss important phone calls. Not recieveing notifications for email, or my company app which helps tell me if the company sent a message to the truck when I’m out of it. In all honesty just tell me, can I go back to the system before this one or am I just going to have to say screw it all and just get a basic phone and go back to an mp3 player and take a game boy with me everywhere?

My problems appeared immediately after updating my LG G4. My screen would turn off, but would not turn back on unless I connected to my charger (it didn’t have to stay connected). Then my screen would not respond to touch. So I couldn’t even unlock my screen to accept phone calls. Very frustrating. Until I found this site and followed the instructions above: shut off phone, while off press and hold power and up while LG icon appears. I’m not sure I followed all the instructions correctly, but whatever I did worked. Now my phone works perfectly, for now. Thank you!!!

I am having connection issues too after the 2/19 update. Also, I can not get the backlight on my phone to turn on when in low light or dark area’s. I have tried several times to hit the button on the back of the phone. It will only turn on after I have to turn on a light in the room or shined a flashlight into the sensor in on the front of my phone. (Was extremely frustrating when I tried to turn off the morning alarm set on my phone. Nothing was lit on the phone and I could not shut it off till I got the phone in bright light.) Not Happy. Battery life has gotten a lot worse too.

LG G4…didn’t want to update but it took it upon itself to do so…Last Monday my phone was VERY hot in my pocket and when I pulled it out it had the LG logo screen on it. It kept rebooting itself til the battery died! It takes charge but still has the LG symbol when I turn it back on! I’ve removed the battery and restarted many times and it did not help! I know when it was working it had its problems like a unknown number that beeps in when you’re talking and starts counting the time like someone is listening to your convo…didn’t like that at all! The battery drained very quickly! The Internet was really slow with full service and the apps would boot you off and ask if you wanted to report it! Took it to AT&T and they said I had to go through LG and when I called LG they said they will send me a link to make a claim and I would have to send it in to be repaired which will take 7 to 9 business days after they received it! Went through the claim process and it said next step was for a LG representative to call and go from there…its been a couple days and I still haven’t heard from them! Not happy with LG at all and it’s safe to say I won’t have another lg product EVER! LG needs to fix these problems ASAP!!!

Did a Factory Data reset just a couple of minutes ago to resolve the WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity issue in LG G4 Dual Sim LTE on Marshmallow 6.0, restored data through a back up, Still the same response..Both the profiles are dead which started say 2 days back on its own from WiFi first to Bluetooth now.

These kind of OS / OEM glitches on a flagship phone in any emergency situation irritates one to switch over for a better working output.

Any other resolution or method to try ??

This update was a disaster. Still struggling to use it daily. It charges so slow, don’t even try to use the phone or update apps while charging, the phone will get hot as sun in 5 seconds, the charging will stop and battery will even drop in some cases. Uninstalled skype, it swallowed battery like a champ while not even using it. Other apps also chug the battery, like youtube, snapchat etc. It is bs how an update can turn flagship to a hot turdship. Before the factory reset, once LG told me that remaining battery on full charge is 2h – unbelievable. Performance is good, no problem with that, but why is it taking so long to fix it.

I was fearful on installing the new update on my G4, and basically ignored the download notification on my phone. Last week the notification went away on its own (?) and I woke up this morning to the screen being on and Marshmallow INSTALLING on my phone! It did it automatically. I thought you had to manually install after you got the download notification. I’m totally stumped at how it did this! So now I’m on 6.0 but no major issues yet. Battery is so far about the same. I haven’t yet had a chance to check out the Bluetooth, will do that later today.

Update to most recemt Android software and after several attempts ther has been no way to fix the bluetooth calling when connected to car (becore the update it worked perfectly). The sound quality of call is horrible. Audio for music is excellent although skips frequently.

After update write to/from SD card disabled… (insert all the cuss words here) Havent really observed any other issues/concerns but internal storage of LG G4 is 16gig, not very much room with such a large megspixel lense, so eliminating access to SD card is absurd!

Feels like an angle (scam really) to push users to cloud storage which is lame.

Avoid the update, its nothing but a lock that android wont give up the key too.

NEED FIX FOR TEXT MSG. VOLUME PROBLEM AFTR 6.0 UPDATE

A couple of nights ago the my LG G4 automatically forced the marshmallow update on me. By that I mean I looked at my phone about 9 o’clock and it was doing it. nothing I initiated.

Most of the Cosmetic stuff it did I can live with. But one problem I really have is that it seemed to cut the volume of my incoming text message notifications in half. In fact the general volume of my phone ringer and so far it has seen them gone down some percentage points.

An example of this is if I want the ringer to be as loud as it was on setting number 4 before, i now have to put it on number 6. But the text message notification still seems to stay the same. And by the same I mean low. I can barely hear it if I’m driving in the car and all is relatively quiet but outside I miss 80% of the incoming messages because I don’t hear it.

    Any fix for this?
And turning up my ringer/ notification volume does not make it go as high as before it seems like there’s a certain level it stops at and will not increase anymore. My ringer will increase but my notification sounds will not

After a month of using Marshmallow my phone stated giving me ‘not enough free space’ warnings. I rebooted the phone, even uninatalled about 10 apps and it was still only a few megabytes from being full. I had to do a factory reset. Here I am only a week later in the same situation. I don’t know what is causing the memory leak.

I have been to the Sprint store, was giving a new phone for free and the new one has the same issue. Yes i can and have downloaded a third party app for editing, but want my stock editor. LG G4 Android 6.0 is terrible. Is there a way to go back to the previous version. I have very big issues:
1)The phone is unusable in my car. The Bluetooth audio is completely garbled when making calls and the SMS messages no loner work. I have been to the dealer several times with no resolution.

I have contacted MTN and they say it is a banking problem or a software problem and basically I must downgrade or contact the bank. Nobody had any idea of what I am talking about. I have factory reset the phone. Looked on forums how to roll back to lollipop. But I don’t want to root my phone.

for all of you having issues after upgrading to MM 6, you need to factory reset your phone. Stop complaining, the solutions is all over the web. Sprint users, your phone will be brick, that is a phone design flaw, not software so stop complaining about the upgrade.

So the lesson here is, don’t mess with the original, shipped OS. If you do, taking a huge gamble. I’m planing on purchasing a G4 from B&H as a backup, and it ships with LL. Not going to bother with any updates, until it becomes necessary, at minimum, I’ll root.

I recently got my phone, it has 8GB internal memory but I constantly get the ‘low memory’ message. I have no music on my internal card, only 2.5GB of apps. The rest is eaten up by system memory which I can’t touch. I have moved all the apps that I CAN move to my SD card, but still get that blasted message. Is there any fix for this annoying problem? What also happens is that often the SD card disloges/ isn’t recognized and then I have to format it before the phone actually recognizes it again. Please help

By now maybe no one has this issue or an LG G4. Unfortunately if you do, I have no fix for you and no fix has worked for me. Just thought I’d share my experience. For of all, a hard reset did get my phone back to normal. After I tried updating Marshmallow, I experienced the boot loop. It would actually boot though, but when I would do my “knock code” to unlock it would immediately lock back. Nothing I could do from there except hard reset. Now the problem is this, I can no longer access my security options and no longer will any lock screen work other than swipe. I wonder if it sort of “doctored” itself and is protecting itself, knowing that anything other than swipe would throw it off again. Far fetched I suppose and no big deal (I suppose) but like I said, now I can’t access and other security settings either. Huge bummer!! If anyone just so happens to see this and has any input, please respond. Thanks.

My LG G4 phone updated this new software automaticly and I have been having problems since. I’ve tried removing the battery and turning the phone back on; the phone will turn on for maybe a minute or more but then it will just do its own thing. I went to the verizon store to see if they could fix the problem. After two and a half hours, the verizon employee did a factory reset on my phone. Now my phone won’t get past the LG screen. I am very frustrated with this latest update. Now I have to wait for a replacement in the mail and currently using an old phone from 10 years ago. LG needs to get this shit fixed asafp!

New G4 H810 from vendor on eBay. Stock 5.0.1 OS worked fine. Update pushed by AT&T to 6.0 and phone, if previously set up with swipe security code, can’t be unlocked. If NO swipe security code was set up, it can’t be done with “Unfortunately, android.settings.security has stopped” Also apps couldn’t be uninstalled with the same error: “Unfortunately, android.settings.aps has stopped”.

This happened with the original and a replacement phone, so it’s not a specific phone issue.

AT&T Support indicated that was a known problem and LG had a patch that fixed it, but since the phone wasn’t purchased from AT&T, I need to send back to LG for repair. So I haven’t had a chance to experience all the other problems folks have had as noted in this thread.

It seems that my service is going in and out on my LG G4. When my service reconnects, it always says out loud “Verizon Wireless” (I can’t figure out how to shut that off), but it does that at various times during the day. Also, when talking on the phone, the calls seem to cut in and out. Would this be from the update issues? Any suggestions?

I could use some advice on my LG-G4 which I bought maybe just over a year ago new with 6.0 and has no further updates available yet. I have been pretty happy with the phone as far as functioning properly (eg. battery life almost a week, although I have no data plan I talk text and use apps on the phone extensively). I do have one nagging issue that I have not bothered to bring in to get checked because its intermittent, but some times when I end a call, if I go to make another the phone indicates no service – bugs me quite a bit because it happens more often than I’d like. However the main reason for this mail is because I have an app called “case air” for a SLR camera control device, this device and software appear to work correctly although for some reason I cannot save the photos to the SD card, only the internal memory (“save to SD card” greyed out on the app settings screen). I have tried numerous times to format, fiddle with the new brand name card, etc but to no avail. The “case air” support team, offer very poor support and claim it is my phone but based on user complaints of various software issues I still think it’s the app. I can see the SD card in the android storage screen, can mount/dismount when I please. The only other thing that I observed is that when I format it saves a lot of stuff on the card and I cannot understand why so many files get installed to the card on a format – 1.09mb worth. Perhaps it’s not being formatted correctly?

If the update doesn’t ^%$# up my phone it’d be a FIRST. I will not update unless it’s by mistake. Gotta head to the phone store EVERY TIME I’ve done an OS update and it’s always the same scam. “Oh, you’ll have to pay more for this new phone since your current phone is “so old””. In every case less than 2yrs. Screw you Android updates, you SUCK!

“Updating” to your phone OS is just a scam people. it’s doesn’t fix anything, only breaks your current phone forcing you to pay for an new phone. Don’t ever do an update. I’m speaking from experience. (Same MO 5 times)
